      +Son of a Zombie How so? The only things that affect stopping power are mechanical grip (tires) and quality of brakes (how quickly you can stop, with the limit being either bad brakes, or in the case of good brakes, tire traction). And of course basic stuff like ABS.

    • @LOLKINGBABY
      @LOLKINGBABY 8 лет назад +34

      +Haloruler64 I think he's referring to lift off decel not braking, with a load on all 4 tires, they decel as a unit and slow down the vehicle instead of having 2 wheels freely turning with no load. Load in this case meaning drive line not weight

    No, the problem was, there were cars stuck or abandoned all over the place and he was trapped on the highway waiting for all the other cars to move.

      FCFordLord Where do you live? It depends on your climate and road conditions. I get at most 3 years out of my winter tires. They really make a huge difference especially when temps drop like -30 -40 C. Winter tires are softer to compensate for the cold and have larger threads to really dig in the snow. They are already on steel rims, it takes me 20 min to change them all in my driveway. Not only do they provide extra grip in the lower temps but it also saves your nice (more silent) summer tires and mags from all the salt, sand, gravel, hidden curbs (and shovel dings...) Maybe you are lucky to get by with all seasons but here it's just not enough.

      i drive an 2015 a4 in st catharines near niagara falls. winter tires are the ultimate solution but my car does well enough with all seasons if i focus and dont drive like a maniac. cornering is easily as good with slow speeds cause of the power to the rear wheels but braking is compromised on all seasons.

    It's important to know all AWD systems are NOT the same. Some systems are FWD bias, 50 50 split, RWD bias and some even don't kick in until slippage is detected. That's why it's important to look these things up before jumping on a car because it's advertised to have "AWD".

    • @st_us
      @st_us 8 лет назад

      Awd Systems react according to where the slippage or loss of traction is so even if most of the torque goes to the Front, still distributed everywhere.

    Good dedicated winter tires, which replaced every five years that's all I ever needed. The best traction I ever had was with a moderately priced set of generic tires, which were studded at the time of purchase. I was one of the few, who could proceed even on uphill covered with black ice.

    No, it is not safer , but it will drive forwards in snow/mud for the same set of tires when compared with a 2 wheel drive. It will not brake better, and it will not go round a corner in snow or mud as this is a function of the tire traction. (You can modify the behaviour of the cornering but gentle use of the gas peddle - front wheel drive understeer, rear wheel oversteer and 4 wheel drive tend to be neutral - but ultimately - you will go sideways just as easily in ANY configuration of drive). So get the correct tires - snow tires are cheaper than 4 wheel drive and are safer because they help you go (much better than 4 wheel drive) AND they help you stop and go round corners.

      If only AWD buyers would understand this. Just attempted to get up to 2 different ski resorts today but due to pass closures and spun out cars we turned around. 4hrs of driving, no boarding. What we did get a eye full of was numerous SUV and trucks freshly spun out in the ditches. All appears to have all season looking tread for the ones I could actually see while passing. All these people slowing down traffic because they believe they bought a AWD winter weapon. All they got was a vehicle that will help them start a little quicker than FWD but then be completely less safe as they think their vehicle's AWD is still helping them. It's non stop, smart people in other walks of life are constantly spitting out stupidity like "well you got AWD, so you ready for the snow". I gladly tell them I will take my FWD family van with Blizzaks over my AWD RAV4 with All Seasons for paved snowy conditions. Who cares how quick you can start if you can't stop. AWD + Winter Tires = Best winter paved driving.

    • @lakelife8679
      @lakelife8679 2 года назад

      And this is exactly what Consumer Reports posted in their testing! AWD is great on the take-off but will make little difference on stops & turns unless you have good winter tires!

    • @rangerover06sc
      @rangerover06sc 2 года назад

      @@45eno Well cares how well your car brakes and turns if you can start. AWD doesn't just get you going faster. It will get you going in situations where 2wd won't. Especially if you have no traction control. Because as soon as one wheel breaks traction you have no wheel drive. You can compensation for the braking/handling disadvantage by driving slower/smoother and by increasing your stopping distance. You can't compensate for not going anywhere because your stuck because only have 2wd.
      Winter tires will never be a cheaper alternative to awd/4wd because winter tires simply do not do what awd/4wd do. Having driven suvs on winter tires, there is a huge difference in your ability get going between 4wd/awd and 2wd. To the point where you have lots of wheel slip or you have none.

    • @WhoNeedszzz
      @WhoNeedszzz 7 лет назад +1

      People need to remember AWD doesn't keep you from going off of the road; it helps you get back on. Definitely should have winter tires in that environment regardless of what you drive.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 7 лет назад +6

      Most often you see 4WDs and AWDs off the road because people don't seem to grasp the concept that their lifted truck, suv, and their 4WD and AWD isn't going to help them stop once they get going 60mph on the ice. Tires aren't the most important, the moron driver is the most important.

    Im glad he mentioned the tire situation, which is a doozy on AWD cars. One tire blows and you might have to spend $600+ on a new set. Plus, you have more axles with seals that can leak, and CV joints that can go bad. I have replaced 3/4 axles and seals on my car... then you have a transfer case mount that can go bad too, causing clunking. A lot more parts with AWD, but sure is hella fun in the snow!

It only snows here like once every 2 years or so. I don't want to replace all four tires simultaneously either. It can still pull a light-duty trailer, fairly easy (Yeah, I decided to get a Rogue instead of a Frontier because Frontiers got about as bad gas mileage as a Titan, and I don't need all that extra horsepower all the time.)

    Scotty, love your channel. I own a Subaru Forester, and love it. Subaru, unlike the other companies, build AWD into ALL their vehicles - it is not an afterthought. The engine compartment is VERY clean. Oil filter right on top of the engine. Very clean underneath. I would say they stand out in that regard - I would maintain that Subaru's do not have some of the problems, such as accessiblity to transmission and engine parts that the other cars have. I know several other people who own Subarus and love them, no problems even with high-milage ones.

    I had a Toyota Sienna fwd minivan that my son learned to drive on in Iowa. Winter came and he ended up in someone's front yard. So I bought winter tires, and he got around with no problems. The tires were great in the cold, not just snow. My son is still not a good winter driver--3 years with winter tires probably didn't force him to learn. This year he drove my Lexus RX Awd with all seasons, I have no problem but he slides a little when the roads are iffy. The winter wheels were over $800 but I'm confident helped to prevent accidents or worse (any accident could easily cost over $800). Plus, changing wheels before and after winter forced me to check the brakes and rotate tires. Awd is not that necessary--plus must account for rear differential and transfer case service.

    AWD does make a difference and you can feel it. my honda civic was a FWD and Everytime I would take it to the next city I would have to go through very steep hills. going up hill was ok going down hill however was a little intimidating. Then I got my SUV which is a AWD and when I take it on those hills the car has a good grip on the road. I feel safe and in control going up and down those hills. I always feel in control of my car even when it is on cruise control going up and down hill.

    I own two AWD vehicles. I have a 2012 GMC Terrain SLT-1 AWD, and a 2015 Subaru Outback Limited. I actually had a Suzuki Grand Vitara Luxury 4WD that I traded in for the Subaru. I like the wet road, snow, ice covered road traction. I do maintain both vehicles very well, so unexpected repairs are a minimum. The Suzuki did need a new transfer case at about 55k miles, but it was replaced under the 7/70 warranty. I am told the folks who purchased my Suzuki from the Subaru dealer love it. Now, my current vehicles are not too hard on fuel. The Subaru delivers 36-38 mpg on the highway., the GMC not so much. I made a mistake purchasing the GMC. I should have opted for the 6cyl, but did not. The 4cyl is quite anemic, but okay for my use. The AWD on the Terrain added 300lbs to the weight of the vehicle. I have always found tire wear to be consistent as I rotate the tires every 6k miles. I love AWD, and as long as I live in a snow climate, AWD is the way to go.

    One of the most frequent uses of a car's max power is pulling out in heavy traffic from a stop while avoiding oncoming traffic. You can sit for 2 minutes waiting for a big enough opening or you can have a powerful engine that allows you to assume the going rate of speed in 3-4 seconds. When pulling out with awd you can floor it and not suffer any wheel slip that the system can't handle. Try it in a rwd car and you can fishtail. Or the system kills the power. Do it with fwd and that much power and the wheel will squirm all over, sometimes causing a driver to enter another lane.

    I am in Australia and have a Toyota 80 Series AWD (all wheel Drive) or constant 4WD. There are several local businesses who can supply 2WD conversions so that the vehicle ends up only being driven by rear wheels. The conversion comes with "free wheeling front hubs" so that it can be switched back to 4WD within a minute or two if you decide to 'go bush'.
    The kit means that you can allegedly save several MPG if you are only using the car on regular paved roads because the engine is only driving two wheels instead of four when four are not needed.

    In my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe, I get around great. I only have front-wheel drive, but what helps the most (and I think should be standard on all cars before lane-departure warnings & automatic braking systems [note: I DO NOT mean antilock]) is my ShifTronic fully-shiftable automatic transmission. It is waaay better than Lo-4 since I can literally shift whenever I want, if I so choose. Unless of course I try to shift too early, but then the computer won't let me. It also won't let me redline. But in the snow (I live in Illinois) I am able to start in 2nd gear, and upshift as soon as mechanically possible to maintain traction on acceleration, then downshift when stopping. The only reason I got stuck was when my girlfriend slid off the highway when it was 90% covered in black ice...but then again, the once-champion BFGoodrich Traction T/A tires were now almost completely bald. My new General Grabber STX's are cheaper and better. Illinois does not have the worst winters, I know, but they can get really bad. But any good set of all-season tires will do admirably in the winter in a climate like mine, with a transmission like mine (or a manual), without the need for 4WD/AWD.

  • @BlueDroneBlues

    The impression I gather is forget AWD and stay away from Season tires unless you don't deal with winter weather. Go buy all Weather tires (Mountain Tires) they do amazingly well in snowy conditions and rainy conditions. They also work well in the summer time. Snow tires are the absolute best for winter driving, but have to be changed out on normal days or you will ruin them. The stopping and going between snow tires and weather tires aren't too far apart either. But both absolutely dominate all season tires altogether!

    The Volvo Haldex all wheel drive system won’t be damaged by uneven tire ware, a different size wheel or uneven tire pressure. And if the engine is turned off it can be towed with only 1 axel off the ground. And Haldex generation 5 doesn’t require servicing. There’s no oil filter to change.

    I've been driving Honda CR-V's, Element and HR-V and even a first gen Ford Escape and I've learned a lot over the years. First, Scotty is putting all of his eggs in one basket. Not all AWD's are alike and should be examined separately and Scotty is wrong on some of his generalizations.
    1. Subaru has the AWD engaged all the time and wears out tires faster than the Honda AWD system because the Honda system is FWD until the front tires spin. In my case, this only happens in the worst part of the winter months so my tires on the CRV and Element have lasted just as long as the ones on my wife's Accord which is only FWD.
    2. Always have good tires on all four corners of your AWD car. They react together for best performance. Rotate all of them on a regular basis and replace all four when needed. An AWD vehicle with slick tires is actually more dangerous in slick situations than a FWD or RWD vehicle. The 2WD vehicle will usually slide in only one direction when it loses grip. The AWD vehicle will do "360's" with no warning.
    I speak from experience and I've driven on freezing rain, 20" fresh snow and 20" solid ice (melted snow that froze solid at sunset), in deep ruts, mud and anything else you can imagine. I will always have an AWD vehicle in my fleet.
    Maintenance tip: keep the rear diff fluid in Honda AWD systems changed regularly. It is like ATF and it does have a limited life span. I change the one quart capacity in my Honda's @ 30K miles even though the owner's manual recommends 60K miles -- cheap insurance.

    • @boomerguy9935
      @boomerguy9935 Год назад +1

      @@gabrielpanebianco6542 The Honda HRV, CRV and Element all handle/grip well in the snow as long as you have good tires and ground clearance. However, I feel that Subaru does have the advantage with its symmetric AWD. Since I only have seasonal snow with tolerable winters, I prefer the Honda's advantage of less maintenance and better gas mileage. If I lived in more extreme areas, such as Minnesota, upstate NY or Alaska, I would probably go with the Subaru's system.
      However, my experience in owning Subaru and Honda cars gives the overall quality advantage to Honda.

    On my AWD cars all the tires wear at the same rate. Regardless, when they are 5 years old, the rubber is degraded anyway, o I replace them all. On my FWD, I kept replacing the front and 7 years later, I replaced the back and the tires were pretty much welded to the rims and cracked, so the bead had to be severely cleaned with a wire brush from the chunks.

    Not all AWD cars are the same. Subaru's run all four wheels all the time. Most of them, like my CR-V and Element don't; they only run the front wheels until they slip. This makes a big difference in gas mileage and maintenance costs. They only extra maintenance I have to do to my Honda's is change the one quart of rear differential fluid every 30K miles (owner's manual suggests 60K miles) which only costs less than $20 for fluid and labor every two years.

    • @godbacks09

  • @paulstandaert5709
    @paulstandaert5709 6 лет назад

    As to whether or not all the tires need to be replaced depends on how the all wheel drive system works. If you use an early 2000's Toyota highlander as an example, it is nothing but open differentials all around, so it won't care the least bit.
    My Suzuki SX4's all wheel drive only engages the rear wheels when the fronts start slipping, so again, not changing all four tires is not a problem.
    The Chrysler Minivan / Pacifica all wheel drive system intentionally has slightly different gear ratios between the front and rear "axles" so it is intended to have a bit different tire sizes, so there's no need to buy all 4 with one of those, either.
    But if you have a vehicle that has a viscous coupler that connects the front and rear wheels together, you want the wheel speed differential between the front and rear wheels to be as identical as possible.

  • @StackBundle
    @StackBundle 6 лет назад

    My v70 xc has a viscous coupling awd system which has it's ups and downs. A downside is that any uneven tire wear will just destroy the rear driveshaft. The upside is that any time of year you don't get snow you can just take it out in about 20-30 minutes and store it until winter.

Ford's AWD system utilizes a PTU (Power transfer unit) that uses a clutch (dry clutch for the non-interceptor versions) to transfer power from the front to the rear (All Ford/Lincoln's AWD systems are FWD biased). The problems so far have been PTU seal leaks which happens when the PTU overheats (Common when you drive hard like the Police Interceptor Utilities do). The problem is that these vehicles are no longer designed to last. They are designed to be useful up to 150K miles.
