I keep hearing from supporters of Chinese martial arts that Muay Thai came directly from shaolin kung fu, but the more I read of Thai and Indo-China history the direct influence of Chinese martial arts is sparse at best, with most being Buddhist philosophy teachings in the region. The war and fighting styles such as Myanmar Lethwei, Muay Thai, Muay Lao, and Cambodian Bokator all seem to have a greater direct influence from Indian customs and systems. Kalaripayattu looks very much like what you see demonstrated as Muay Boran.

@gbb357 Historically, the art can be traced to the Middle Ages, or ca. the 11th to 12th century, more specifically to the account by historian Elamkulam Kunjan Pillai who attribtues the birth of kalari payat to an extended period of warfare between the Tamil Kingdoms Cheras and the Cholas in the 11th century AD.
While it is clear that various forms of martial arts have been practiced in China since antiquity, very little detail on specifics can be recovered for times predating the 16th century.

Every person who's watching this demonstration, as a Kalari practitioner🙏 I would like to explain you that,
This is clearly not a proper demonstration of Kalaripayattu's hand to hand combat!😞😞😕😕
Here's these practioners are only throwing each other, jumping and apply locks very slowly without any strikes at all... 😅😅😅
Most Probably, they aren't trained enough to apply the techniques, as it's the last thing to learn in Kalaripayattu(Kalari training can even take your entire life span). Or, they just don't wanna show this stuff to everyone.💔💔
In Kalari, the last stage is Verumkai(Unarmed combat)
    It includes:
Mainly open hand strikes from different different angles + Different types of Punches + Kicks from different directions + Slips + Long Blocks + Short blocks + 64 types of throws in grappling + counter of the throws + 18 types of locks and their variations + Unlocking the locks + Elbow Strikes + Knee Strikes + Marma hitting(and most deadly).
Verumkai is putted above all combat stages of Kalari, Koltgari (fighting with wooden weapons) and Angathari (fighting with metal weapons), for a reason🔥...

I think what he's talking about is a Indian monk came to the Shaolin and taught them Yoga excersises. The Shaolin to this day do many strength and flexibility training based in Yoga and so does Kalaripyattu.Fighting techniques of"Kung fu"is a very broad term and covers a vast aray of styles, time periods, land radius. There's probably Thousands of "Kung fu" styles, but alot of the training comes from Indians, at least in the most famous Kung fu place, Shaolin =) Not ALL kung fu is from there lol

@prince24mathew ..Here's two more. Titled, "Shaolin Monk vs Taekwondo Master" this is a demo, and this one, actual competition, titled "Kung Fu Master vs Taekwon Do Black Belt". Again, that's real KungFu, no similarities whatsoever with Kalaripayattu or any other Indian martial arts.

@gbb357 yeah, and you know how it's done right? are you out of your mind or didn't your father catch you after he threw you up in the air? maaaann... kalari was meant to be usefull if you're fighting in a war... so it's obious it's meant for war... and this kick is sloppy and easy to predict... but it's so easy, that you can combine it with a slash of a dagger or something else... that's that what makes the difference

@prince24mathew ...Watch the videos i suggested, that's real KungFu. Nothing close to Kalaripayattu at all, not even a slight resemblance. FYI, Kalaripayattu has animal forms as well, but it's not the same form & technique as KungFu's animal forms.

@gbb357 research it yourself my friend :) ;; I speak from an unbiased perspective as I study Muay Thai and only state facts that I read from historical accounts such as yours truly, Ip Man who indeed says so himself, may he R.I.P might I add. It's not the credibility and reputation that makes a Martial Art strong, it is it's disciples and techniques, and how they compliment eachother in terms of learning. The root of one's mistake is not in the Martial Art itself, but the Martial Artist.

@prince24mathew ..No kidding it's a demo. Demos usually looks more fluid & choreographed. That kick is a simple kick to the shin, in a real fight or even a competition fight, it'll be useless, & you shouldn't block it like that, by stooping down low with your hands down, you're leaving yourself wide open for a strike, any strike. That's just common sense. Watch a KungFu demo here, you'll see the huge difference in execution, form, & style. Proof that they're not related.

@gbb357 Present day chinese, japanese world worship dharma as their guru, they know about Bodhidharma, and please read wikipedia, it's mentioned there that Dharma was the one who trained chinese, and possibly Kalarippayattu, an indian maritial art purposefully should match chinese maritial arts, Bodhi left India and practiced zen in Chinese, Frankly, That time, an indian surely did not had any knowledge of Zen, and It's a wonder, that how come an INDIAN be a GURU of Chinese, can't reason!

  • @gbb357

@praj92 ....Okay, "The earliest references to Chinese martial arts are found in the Spring & Autumn Annals (5th century BCE)"where a hand to hand combat theory, including the integration of notions of "hard" & "soft" techniques is mentioned. " Fact, there's no similarities in technique, style, execution, & form between kalaripayatu & KungFu. Just watch & compare all the videos here in youtube between the two. YOu have to be blind or in denial not to see the obvious & complete differences.

Kalari is really not used conventional fight. It's mainly used to straight up killing mostly practiced in wars. Also 90% of its fighting techniques are forbidden and not shared after the ban of learning of kalari at the time of British rule. Kalari helps maintain a body.

@gbb357 Gautama Buddha himself was born and raised in India might I add. This "lie" you seem to be angered by; the boasting of Kalari being the "mother of all martial arts", is purely the conveying of a romanticized propaganda by Martial Artist enthusiasts who have no sense of Humility and Open-minded perspective. Masters know that only those who seek knowledge not want knowledge are worthy enough to study a Martial Art. Which is mostly why Kalari is rarely known or publicized/advertised
