    I thought “Fuji-san” was just a cute nickname for the mountain. Like “Mr Fuji” 😂
    Thanks Matt for enlightening me 😂

      It's both! People sometimes tend to refer to Mt. Fuji as its own entity like Fuji-San as a sort of wordplay

    How in the world did you find each of these words in so many games at the same time? You must be remembering dialogues by heart or having an entire game's transcription in a text file. This is insanity

  • @Dander5000
    @Dander5000 2 месяца назад +13

    To me, 沢山 does have something to do with "mountain". Though, not in the literal way.. more like "I've got a mountain of..."!

    • @daviddavidson1090
      @daviddavidson1090 2 месяца назад +1

      As in the expression "山ほどある" = "There is (as much as) a mountain [of it]."
      This is the real connection in the etymology of the word. "沢" also kind of means "plenty" in 潤沢, 贅沢.

      Many games can be played without fully understanding them, in fact I played pikmin 4 for the first time in japanese (never played that one before. Did play the previous and knew about ochi and the other basic changes from watching challenge runs) and completed without difficulty. I didn't understand half of what I was doing, but makes it replayable once I do. I'm currently doing a vrgame called legendary tales this way as well. If I run into something I think I'll need to know I look it up using my methods. Games like legendary tales is especially fun because I swear it's like reading an ancient text sometimes, since it's a looter style game (borderlands).
      I seriously recommend looter games like this, because while it's extremely benefical to know what tool you are using, it's not strictly necessary. The visuals are often enough to tell you without trouble, and sometimes you may pick up on a new kanji or word. I recommend playing through a game that doesn't require great knowledge of it, and then on round two go through and really try to read and understand.

    沢山 in kanji you can probably relate it to a mountain of something, hence giving the nuance of a pile or lot - many.
    (Also the first kanji 沢 means swamp, so in English if you're swamped with something it gives the nuance of being overwhelmed by the quantity)

    Meanwhile, in 大山 we find not "yama", not "san", not "zan", but SEN. Mount Daisen, that is Mount Great Mountain.
    Yeah, readings are really qirky at times in Japanese... The sooner you get used to it, the better. Otherwise, you'll be shedding lots of tears in no time 🤭

    3:29 Are the pronunciation for 音読み (onyomi) readings typically presented in Katakana rather than Hiragana? Or is it more correct to write them in Katakana since it comes from Chinese?

    • @shishinonaito
      @shishinonaito 2 месяца назад +2

      Yes. Usually, kunyomi readings are written in hiragana and onyomi in katakana. Incredibly useful when learning the readings of kanji. WARNING: this is ONLY applied to writing the readings of a kanji. When writing actual words, hiragana and katakana follow rules that have nothing to do with how the word is read.
      Example: 沢山 is read with onyomi, but it is actually written in hiragana, not in katakana, when written in syllabary. This is a general rule for all words with an onyomi reading that are written in syllabary instead of kanji.
