John Paul Jones is, without a doubt, the most talented member of Led Zeppelin! Just when I think there's nothing he can do to surprise me...He does! A pipe organ! WOW!!!
One of the most versatile, underrated musicians in rock 'n' roll. Edit: I didn't mean to start a mini war in the replies but I did, and now I have to clarify. I'm getting a lot of replies where people are essentially saying "He's not underrated because I love him!" Being underrated is not a function of how one person feels; it is a function of how someone with talent is treated relative to other people. So I'll say my piece and then step away from replying back. #1: I love JPJ. Me saying he is underrated is a compliment and some people seem to be taking it as an attack on him. It's not. #2: JPJ is absolutely underrated. The recording industry, concert industry, people who know Led Zep but don't understand his talents or contributions to the band, and even Page & Plant themselves do not give him the credit he deserves. When P&P got back together for a mini-reunion, they didn't even invite him. And JPJ's net worth is less than half P&P's individual net worths. When he was honored by the Kennedy Center, it was as a member of Led Zep. Later in life in the last decade he has started getting proper recognition, but he was absent from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s except in the hearts of other notable musicians. In 2014, Jones ranked first on Paste magazine's list of "20 Most Underrated Bassists." That about says it all. #3: Finally, me saying he is underrated is NOT me saying he should be, or that if you like him there is a problem. Many people seem to either not understand what being underrated means, or they think I'm coming at them personally for saying JPJ deserves more recognition. That's simply not what the word means, and JPJ has absolutely been underrated. Before you comment, just do a Google search on it. For 50 years JPJ has lived in the shadow of P&P, even though he is _arguably_ a better artist than they are (and I only say that because he is classically trained, dignified, and classy and held Led Zep together in the end). Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. I love John Paul Jones. Have a lovely day :)
@@ChironZore They do, just not here or by us. I'll quote guitarist Martin Turner: "If he’s underrated or ignored, it’s by people who don’t really know the music of Led Zeppelin very well." Many people love Led Zep, but as popular bands go, lots of folks don't know the history of them as we do. They know Plant & Page. I remember when I was in high school, lots of my friends saw Plant & Page on tour and said "I saw Led Zeppelin!" No. No you didn't. By that stretch, Bonham is marginally underrated, too, but he was such a powerful presence he announced himself as a force of nature. Jonesy was dignified, reserved, classically trained, and the glue that held the band together despite the other three's antics. His skill as a musician and as a class act person was why Peter Grant fought so hard to keep him in the band at the worst of times. So sadly, many do underrate him, but we are here in the company of those who celebrate him, as we should ❤️ 🎵🎶
@@JoeandAngie Underrating is not the same as denigrating. JPJ has not received the recognition in his career that others of his caliber have. See my comment above.
I don’t know why, but when JPJ plays Zeppelin songs now, it just lands differently than Page or Plant. It almost feels like Jonesy is recalling a memory, rather than playing one of his songs
Lame commenting on your own comment, but re-watching: this is a kindly, old man with a twinkle in his eye, telling you one of his fondest stories. That’s special
John Paul Jones was an a-list British session player! This required him having an instinctive automatic empathy, feel and creativity for any style of music!
I've come to the realization. He might be the best musician in the BAND. I didn't like the fact that they did all those tours without him. I know he's dying to play live. One of the reasons why I didn't appreciate page and plants tours as much as I should have. Who made up a majority of the sound who wrote black dog.
Today's "mainstream" music sucks. None of it will be played in 50 years. Rock and Roll from the will be played forever and still resonate in everyone's ears.
Jones is an awesome musician. One of my favorites is the live version from 73 Madison Square Garden "No Quarter." Plus beautiful "Rain Song" from same concert.
Wow,fantastic mastery of that pipe organ.Would love to have seen Jimmy Greenspoon on one of these playing his Chest Fever solo.Pipe organs are just so ethereal and bold.
This makes my entire being smile. JPJ was the backbone of Zep. Everything else existed because he laid down a solid flawless foundation for his band mates to shine.
They were a great band . let's remember the time this was going on . they worked together and played great music and till this date and time we still listen as if it was yestetday . just great .
Why can't a certain three musicians get together and make music? This, and all the other clips I've seen from Big Ears so far, is so brilliant, and so accepting of his legacy. Just imagine if after this intro there was this guy playing acoustic guitar, and another one started singing?
Saw Mr. Jones in Framingham, Mass. 54½ years ago. GREAT concert! Is that organ in Downtown Brooklyn still there? Used to be a theater - now a gym? One or two famous Rock 'n' Roll concerts there in the 50's
No word of a lie: as i was quickly scrolling through videos i spotted the thumbnail for this video and, not even knowing it was JPJ, i briefly thought it was a colour variation to The Song Remains The Same album cover.
Led Zeppelins' secret weapon!!! Multi talented musician that held the band together interlocking with John Bonhams' drumming. Check out the bass line in "The Lemon Song" on Led Zep II.
The Swiss Army knife of Led Zeppelin
There you Go Man!
That’s well said.
With every knife in it as sharp as a samurai sword.
JP Jones, that quiet guy off on the side at a Led Zeppelin shows who was their secret weapon in sound
What an absolute genius. Growing up listening to Led Zeppelin. I’m 69 year old and still listening to these music Legends. Irreplaceable Rock Band.
