I love these videos. As someone with no experience with dairy cows and who will likely never get to experience it, I get to live vicariously through you 😂❤️
I used to work with Holstein cows for over 20years, ten years I a robotstall. My secret trick if they don't let the milk down is, scratch the udder with your nails not hard just like if you would give the cow goosebumps. It works on heifers who is newbies and other cows. Like your videos, hello from Sweden.
I love that you addressed numbness and hand milking. I had mild carpal tunnel but then injured my neck during my last pregnancy in a way that causes numbness from my shoulder to my finger tips. That healed with A LOT of chiropractor appointments and would only flair up when I overused (cutting meat during butchering weeks was a huge aggravation and cutting lots of vegetables and fruit for canning projects). Fast forward a year later and we got our first milk cow. Nothing aggravated that old injury like hand milking. I had the muscle soreness in my hands and forearms but additionally I had constant pins and needles in my entire arm and I would wake in the middle of the night with shooting, excruciating pain and my middle and ring finger would be ice cold like they lost circulation. I've had 4 natural births, but this had me up at night in tears. I kept pushing in hopes it would get better (while seeing my Chiro multiple times a week). It got worse with everyday. I struggled to pick up the baby. I was dropping jars. I couldn't open anything with a screw top because my grip was so weak and numb. I was honestly devastated because here I was finally milking, my dream come true and I couldn't function! Finally at 6 weeks I caved and bought a milk machine, used. It was expensive and I had to skip 2 months of grocery budget to make it work (thank goodness for food storage!) but it changed everything for me! I can have wonderful, clean, raw milk and still function! After many more chiropractor visits I was able to get mostly back to that state where it only flairs from overuse. I can sleep at night again and I don't have constant tingling. If anyone else is in that position, know that you can have a milk cow and not live in pain. It might not be quite as romantic with a milker but all the other benefits are still there and its pretty nice to strain milk and see a crystal clean milk filter lol.
You are so right! It's about being able to have the fresh raw milk. You are a real rockstar to have endured all that pain and worked through it. I'm glad that your health is in a better place and thank you for sharing your story.

Kate You are so knowledgeable and intuitive with your dairy animals. My 93yr old father was always good at training animals .He says too to always end with a success on your part reinforcing positive behavior. NEVER stop with their negative behavior. Great video. Prarie girl from Manitoba here.
Your compassion for your family and farm animals ❤️ is heart warming. And, the introduction of this cow your neighbor so graciously lent your family. Truly a blessing. She's never going to want to leave. The blessings just keep raisning down on you and your family.

Crazy enough, my momma barn cat, who is normally a great milk barn employee, decided to use me and Girlie (cow) as steps to the rafter, it's been a crazy morning, lol.

Thank you so much. This is very useful information for me as I am likely to get a cow from a dairy that won't have been hand milked. Thanks for taking the time to give us a very detailed tutorial. Nothing beats experience!
My dreams are coming true, we finally get to pick up our milk cow on Saturday and I smashed my right hand with my car door. Re-watching your videos makes me feel a little better.
buy cattle panels or some post in ground and some cross post three way. The cows must have limited access to the hayrolls or they stomp on it. Of course good way to make ground fertile. Can drop rolls in different parts of pasture and then in spring have bunch of grass growing up.
Hey Kate. I just successfully canned, for the first time ever ...by myself today - 9 jars of pears 🍐 😀 Then I have a sit for a rest and see you have just uploaded a 40 minute video. My day is now wonderful‼️❤ Thank you so much. 🥰😍
Fun video 😁 I can relate on the fussy dairy animal level but on a much smaller scale. Goats love to kick the bucket over, jump around like a rabbit and lay/sit down on the bucket which is so frustrating but I don't have to worry about them hurting me with the kicking so that's a big difference.😂
Just found you yesterday! I’m addicted! Hello from SE Saskatchewan homeschooling ranching mom. Trying to learn to milk our Holstein. So far she doesn’t like to let down for me unless I bring her calf in to help.
… love the long videos from YOU. There’s no mindless blathering or endless drone footage to make CONTENT! Lol.. then I can walk off while The ad is playing and change laundry or what not and come back when I hear your music or voice

I'm just like man why are the ads so stupid🤦 but I pushed through for you 🤣 I really enjoy this content and am hoping to get a milk cow this year!
I love love these videos. We just had our Holstein cow come fresh. Enjoying the milk. HOWEVER She had mastitis in one quarter. Not getting any milk from quarter. Do you think she will get that quarter back when she has next baby
When I got my goats I knew I had carpel tunnel. I pushed through and it was TERRIBLY PAINFUL BUT I actually think it helped. I was so determined to make sure I knew where the milk i was feeding my kids came from i would go through hell to make it happen and i honestly think it helped the carpal tunnel. I know that sounds counter productive but it really did.
I have a question about the pooping in the stanchion. I saw a video near the beginning of my milk cow research where a couple were trying to quickly milk their cows and get off to church but the cows each pooped like three times. The couple were really impatient about it and said this happened a lot. But in your videos I never see the cows (your owned cows) poop while milking. You mentioned in this video that they learn that its bad manners. How do you teach them that? Is cows pooping while milking a big issue with all cows and you have to train it out of them? What should I know about this?
Sometimes it's that people are rushing them. For example if they are bedded down and you get them up, you should give them a few minutes to do their business. I guess it's also a control thing as well, so you want to show them who is boss. So you are giving them the time to poop before milking. Getting them into that habit is important. I hope that answers your question.
