01:15 The limitations of product-focused evaluation
05:39 What a Process Enjoyment Test (PET) is
    06:20 Variable #1: Media
    06:44 Variable #2: Subject
    10:34 Variable #3: Method
    11:28 Variable #4: Scale
14:00 Tips for recording information during your PET
17:00 Reframing the effort required for a creative process
19:42 How to get started with a PET this week
Because we live in a world that rewards production and tangible outcomes, it’s no surprise that the same standard applies to creativity. When I’m feeling overly fixated on a perfect result, I like to refocus my energy using a Process Enjoyment Test (PET).
Remember that feeling of freestyling and feeling good about your art? PETs can help you get back to that place of excitement and curiosity, regardless of the actual finished product.
PETs are a measurable, and specific creative process with up to four constraints: media, subject, method, and scale. In this episode, I share examples of what each category might look like depending on your medium, share how I’ve applied them in the past, and walk through an outline for building your own PET.

    About Kendyll:
Hi friends and welcome to Art Lab! My name is Kendyll Hillegas and I'm a full time commercial illustrator and artist. I’m passionate about understanding the creative process, what supports it, and what gets in the way. So, when I’m not making work for clients, I love exploring the places that art-making and emotions intersect - inspiration, identity, self-doubt, and creative block. These are the questions I come back to again and again, and need to talk about more, so if you’re in the same boat, I hope you’ll join me!

I find this advice to be extremely helpful! I've spent a long time trying to pinpoint a particular style, which has only left me feeling increasingly frustrated because although I appreciate many different styles, I don't necessarily enjoy the process that's involved in creating them. It makes a lot more sense to focus on identifying the process that I truly enjoy working in!

I'm finding that the process I love is the watercolor and colored pencil mixed media illustration style that you demonstrated in several of your Skillshare classes! I'm not creating at the level of realism that you do but I'm really enjoying creating art again after many years (on and off) of blocks. Your work has literally shifted my mindset and brought back the joy of art again! I can't thank you enough, Kendyll.

Wonderful message, Kendyll! I’ve been learning Procreate the past few months and often get discouraged after completing tutorials because I can’t seem to “get it right” after trying the methods and techniques that are taught. I press forward and remind myself that the tutors have had years to perfect their craft and I shouldn’t compare my early attempts to those who are more experienced.
I will watch this video again (and again!) to try out the PET for my own situation and discover the best process for my art endeavors 😊

YESSS! Can't wait to hear how your PET goes, Kim!
And fwiw, I found Procreate to be more challenging than watercolor in many ways, so I feel you!
