It's interesting how a "treasure in heaven" is frequently associated with a monetary contribution to a religious institution or other ministry on earth, but that isn't it. One can't buy any "treasure in heaven." The spiritual treasure then, is a matter of the heart, of priority, of focus. We're encouraged to focus on and to pursue spiritual righteousness and moral rectitude. Giving money can be a part of that, but money itself is a neutral tool. It has no spiritual value in and of itself. There's no biblical commandment for anyone to tithe from earned wages. Not Jews nor Gentiles, not New Testament, or Old. But there's nothing wrong with choosing to tithe, money or otherwise, to a church or otherwise, as we are able and are led.
