I’m surprised the extra vids don’t do as well since imo they provide a lot more information. I LOVE them
Same here. The extras are real treasures.
It is related to search. People search for reviews, not extras, usually. Rally-reviews are so well done though, that it will pull people in, sub and watch the extras as well. (But many just check reviews and move on).
I actually come only for the Xtras - I have over 200 bottles of spirits at home(including ~150 rums and ~20 whisky), so trying to limit new purchases, but extras are always interesting and enriching, also for experiences already owned bottles
this one did better in the thumbs up than the original
The reviews are information about a certain whiskey, but these extras should not be overlooked, they’re filled with information.
Excellent video Ralfy
I like your Extras reviews Ralfy. Informative, fun and one can broaden one's horizons.👍
My "system" is listen to Ralfy, try what Ralfy likes, thank Ralfy for sharing his insights... My journey is making stops I might never have found without you. Thank you, Ralfy!
Ralfy, I will always continue to watch the extras, love them and keep the coming.
I’m really enjoying these “xtras” vlogs. Sorry to hear that they don’t get as many views. As you say, some people are lazy and as I believe, some people are more curious than others. Thanks again.
Yup. The Extras are definitely my favourite and most useful type of Ralfy video.
Totally agree. It is one thing to be familiar with the individual scotch, but Ralfy changes the ballgame completely with the Extras segment by giving actual insight into the making, character, and history of the malt AND the distillers.
Deanston 12. Kilkerran 12 and Clynelish 14..... All outstanding for under fifty quid. All reviewed and recommended by Ralfy and I've since bought and drunk several bottles of each. Thanks Bothy Dweller
I love my journey specially with you you’ve helped me so much over the years and made my hobby so much better. Thanks mate .sean
Here I sit, watching this while sipping some Deanston Virgin Oak with 2½ml of distilled water in it, enjoying every drop as Ralfy talks about it.
Two nights ago, I was sipping a bit of Caol Ila 12, about as different from the Deanston as one can find.
The changing up of drams from time to time is something I learned quite awhile back from Ralfy, and it has made a huge and positive difference in my experience of my whiskys.
Thank you, Ralfy, for all you do for us. Stay well.
The more I watch, the more I would like to spend an evening with a few drams with you!
Thanks for the content you merry, musing malt minstrel!
It’s funny, I seem to listen to your extras videos first as I often find them more enjoyable than the reviews. Keep up the good work Ralfy!
I love your extra videos. They are informative and expand my knowledge.
Love the Xtras. More insightful than the review which is always subjective to each individual
Thank you Ralfy. I learned a few things with this one. Too bad Arkansas is still in the past with their liquor distribution and selling laws, and their taxes are much too high. I often shop in Missouri as a result. If only we could buy on-line!
Thanks again Ralfy for all you do, headed for 1000 Reviews soon
Thank you Ralfy. Always find your extras to have lots of interesting gems of knowledge. Thank you sir.
A very pleasant extra malt moment, I enjoy them quite a lot and it's great value as always. Thank you Ralfy
yay you made the first single malt i got as the malt of the year,,,cheers
Always enjoy the "little extras", I do.
Excited that your book just arrived at my door in St. Louis Ralfy. Keep up the informative and entertaining thoughts on Scotch... and life.
Ralfy, been enjoying the Deanston 9 year Bordeaux so just picked up a 9 year French Brandy finished. Both very nice. They may be US exclusives. Now waiting on Deanston 10 yr PX. All are reasonably price at about $70. Cheers and stay safe!
I find the extras more educational and rich in information. Sometimes i watch the extras first and then, if necesary, I go to see the actual review.
About experience. I just want to share some experience of oak stick in a bottle to you. I obtained a mizunara oak stick during a distillery visit in Japan. I dipped it in a bottle of young Orkney (I thought it was harsh, maybe the oak can mellow it). I tasted the Orkney day after day and found the wood elements increased, but the harshness is still there. I stop this after 10 days and the Orkney was shared to my colleagues (who don't understand much anyway). I dipped the same stick in a bottle of Port Askaig 8 years old, and after a month, it gave the whisky a wonderful layer of oaky finish, which it was lacking in the beginning. My experiment continue and I was blending Old Pulteney 12 and Ancnoc 12 together. While marrying the two, why not put the stick in it! The result was decent and I can taste a mellow mizunara oak after 3 months. Now the stick is in another young whisky, hoping to infuse some positiveness on the finish. Virgin oak is too harsh, seasoned oak is great stuff. Just sharing.
Callendar?
Just finished my bottle of deanston 12. It had been wonderful and opened me to try others. I really appreciate and reviews since I have no knowledge or understanding. The extras are like Paul Harveys’ old show on the radio...”And now it’s time the the rest of the story.” I also have just received the Ralfy book for more insight and support, I hope others do the same.
Near to the distillery , you can find the SAS memorial , with a statue of David Stirling ( and a memorial to the LRDG) , and go to see the red Kites at Argaty , a fantastic day out,
Cool, David Stirling was an unlikely chap wasn't he?
I saw A red kite in Derbyshire last week!
Bruichladdich is a good example of what you're talking about. I prefer their standard bottlings over their ultra exclusives that I've tried.
Shame the ten disappeared
@@linoleumbonypart385 I agree. The classic is quite tasty but it's not the ten.
The Bruichladdie Port Charlotte 10 is really good.
I enjoy and learn more from the extras. Thank you.
I surely think the extras are very worthwhile to watch and extend your knowledge.
congras on that silver button,,,here is hoping for a gold one
good video ,i like these ones where you talk about things and brush over the basics for a refresher ,,i wish there would be a distillery that made just one kind say a 4 or older year old single malt that was not blended ,so if they have 100 casks they just randomly chose a few and put them in a vat to bottle and id like them to use virgin casks never filled made from sotish oak if there is such a thing left lol if they can do that and deliver something good then it would be special and appreciated, ,,did they always get casks from abroad to use?
Balvenie Peat Week definitely works but it does vary from year to year. When you find a great year - Stock Up!
Nice one ralfy, thanks for sharing. Btw, you are right about D12.. I had another taste earlier this month, I kept the bottle for a few days.. and after 2-3 glasses the contrast of the flavours increased. I'm a fan of Deanston because they're a little bit different than other distilleries, bourbon casks.. no chill filtration, no coloring and how they provide themselves electricity, it's so cool and natural. I didn't put water into it to reduce the strenght but I should have because I think 46,3% is a bit strong for a 12 year old. It bothers me a bit why they didn't want to make it 40% un-chill filtered, because it's the good old, clean whisky without sherry, peat and other shit.
I always enjoy the Extras , keep up the great work Ralfy!
The Deanston 20 Sherry cask bottled at 55.3% is one of my favorite drams of all time.
Thanks Ralfy, specially for the extrainformation you are providing all along the way. I will start my own birchwood experiment these days, inspired by one of your older vids. ☺
. . . good luck with it.
Just came across a wonderful novelty: Machrie Moor single malt cask strength from Arran. What a treat! Would be nice to have Ralfie review this malt. Gentle smoke, fresh pepper. Peaty. I was happy to get my hands on this as it is a rarity here in Finland.
I'm from around Stirling and reckon the wee town Ralfy is on about Callander or Aberfoyle. Lots to do in the Trossachs.
That's crazy... I love these Extras!
A Single Malt distillery producing one single official bottling expression?
For many years Clynelish only produced the 14 Year Old. It's true that recently they have been producing some special editions like the Game of Thrones and the Distillers Edition.
Allt-a-Bhainne only produces a single NAS bottling as far as I am aware. You can get a 21 Year Old but this is a distillery exclusive which I don't think counts.
Balmenach only produces a 12 Year Old under the name Deerstalker.
Teaninich, Strathmill, Mannochmore, Linkwood, Inchgower, Glen Spey, Glenlossie, Dailuaine, Auchroisk and Blair Athol only produce a single official bottling under the Flora and Fauna range (except a few rare and far between special releases).
Cragganmore only has one official bottling. The 12 Year Old. (Again there a few special limited releases every once in a blue moon).
Glen Elgin do the 12 Year Old. (There was an 18 Year Old but that's long gone).
Glenkinchie only do the 12 Year Old(excluding their distillery only editions).
Miltonduff only produce a single 15 YO I believe (minus a few special releases).
Royal Brackla produce the 12 Year Old only. (Minus a few special releases).
Tamnavlin only produce a Double Cask (although they have produced a few Travel Retail limited editions).
and of course, HMacallan and Highland Park are both famous for only having ever produced one single expression... (I'm joking by the way).
I forgot to say: Malt Mate Milwaukee (USA-Wisconsin) Mentions!
Merry Mortal Magnificient Malt Mates
To be honest with you, I prefer watching these X-tras, because of the ocean of information they have. I really like to listen to stories about companies, whisky making techniques, craftsmen, regions, etc...
I have taken a week or more to determine the worth of a purchase, good to hear it's not uncommon. Not a peat fan, it took me 3/4 of the bottle to find the right amount of water to make 12yo Caol Ila enjoyable and learn that some of these may require more work than others to unlock.
Top drawer stuff top Mark's ralfy I will try get a bottle of Deanston 12.👍🥃
These are the types of lectures I wish I had had in college. Very informative! However, I’m still a sucker for Tartan Trinkets.
Keep on whith the ekstras. 😛😛😛Keep on the whisky knowledge running💪💪💪💪
Hi Ralfy! Springbank 15 jumped from $90 to $120 here in Texas (presumably due to tariff changes). Just wondering if you think it's still worth it at that price? Also wondering what you think will happen to Scotch enthusiasm in the USA with these changes? Stay safe! Stay sane in the Bothy!
The tariffs have now been removed but the prices of single malts aren't coming back down. Looks like they pulled a fast one on us.
I know little about Whisk(e)y but I know my Dad likes it so if I see a bottle I think he might like I search for your review on said item, I recently got him a bottle of queen Margot from Lidl on the back of your review an he loves it.
Ralfy did you check to see on the bottle, what Batch this was? It's usually printed on the label and box.
I like best the exstras all the information, its amazing! Stay safe malt mate
Hey Ralfy I've often wondered why the scotch industry doesn't use more "virgin" casks, is it the expense of manufacturing them or does it overpower the delicate nature of malt whisky or maybe some other reason, any info would be appreciated.
I enjoy and value your opinion with your scotch reviews. That said, everyone has a different palette and taste they prefer in their scotch whisky, but it's the video extras that you provide that give me a deeper appreciation for the whisky culture. Having spent over twenty years in the adult beverage industry (wholesale, retail, and restaurants), your no nonsense approach is refreshing! Also, were do you buy your tartan hooded-shirts (I live in the States - Wisconsin)? Moreover, I am currently reading and enjoying your book (while drinking 10 year old Ardbeg of course) with enthusiasm.
Thanks Ralfy informative as ever!!
G’day Ralfy . That trinket and tartan tourist town in the Trossachs wouldn’t happen to be Callender would it ? . We visited that town on a recent trip from our Bothy in the Antipodes , very nice too .
'Caskology' like it Ralphy!
Hi Ralfy
Any chance of a review of good quality NAS whiskeys? Ailsa Bay and Aaran’s Lochranza reserve really deserve a mention, don’t you think?
. . . I will be doing a best NAS soon !
Good information as always. By the way, I just scored a bottle of Balvenie 12yo DW from the 90's for $40eu.
Great points. With exceptions peat should be just a whiff for some that don’t traditionally use it. Glenmorangie Dornoch was a good example that worked for me. I think Glenglassaugh should stay out of the peat market but that’s just me.
Cheers Ralfy🥃🥃🥃🥃
I find it hard to spend double or treble the money on the older bottlings. Are they that much better than the main bottling 10/12yr?
. . . no, different, and often a bit better.
Just scored a bottle of Bullit 10 year for 35 bucks. What a deal and a surprise. Thank you Ralfy. I had a dram and rewatched your review and played along. It was fun and much needed. What kind of water do you use to enhance the notes? I'm sure it matters but I'm still a babe in the woods so to say
Love extras Ralf
IMO the Deanston 12 is an excellent whisky. Unfortunately, as of now, there isnt any in stock in Ontario and Quebec. It also sells for 96 CAD... Dissatisfied...
Crazy price.
I think 60~70 CA$ could be the right cost for that jolly good bottle.
Will you be trying the new James Eadie Linkwood Ralfy? I'm holding off drinking mine for the moment but looking forward to it. I can recommend the JE Ardmore 9 though :)
I've never had Deanston. I am considering buying the 18 y.o. soon...
Thanks for these extra's. I like them a lot. I really would like an Extra about Virgin Oak. What is it exactly? Is it as you say 'new casks' or can it also be rejuvenated casks? Is it really new wood? Because I sometimes have sherry notes in Virgin Oak releases. For instance Glendronach. I hope you will get into it more.
Thanks ralfy. I enjoy the xtras...keep them up. PS... any news on the second batch of barley tweed bunnets? Been a while 😉
Hey Ralfy, Thanks for all of the great reviews and the perspective over the years. Thoroughly enjoy your vlogs.
I was catching up on one of your reviews from a few weeks back where Tobermory distillery and their woes were mentioned. Is there another area, distillery or specific bottling that you would recommend as a huge fan of their Tobermory 10? Its freshness, mineral, umami, and bright citrusy green fruit is what hits the sweet spot on my palate. I'm in the USA and haven't been able to find their Tobermory 10 for over a year now. I look forward to trying their Ledaig, but at the moment I'm not in the peat market. Hope Tobermory pulls through, as once discovering this killer malt just a couple of years ago, it has sadly been washed away. Any pertinent info on the distillery would be great too.
Thanks,
a long time malt mate
murmuring mischief making malt mates
. . . always one I keep an eye on !
Happy Easter Ralfy. Your a good malt mate.
Do you have any comment, Ralfy, about sending whisky 'down under' for eighteen thousand kilometers, whether in bulk or by bottled in Scotland cases? For example, years ago, the Whyte and Mackay whisky bottled in Scotland was superior to the same product, but bottled in New Zealand. I'd like to know if the Scottish distilleries take as much care with the bulk product as they do with smaller batches for the local market and if, for example, whisky can be "bruised" by being sloshed around in stainless steel for a few weeks while in transit. Unfortunately, our local Willowbank distillery was closed down and the gear sent to Fiji for making rum. But they may have shot themselves in the foot by bottling the whisky at 37% when the Scottish product was 40%, for much the same price.
I thought scotch whisky had to be bottled in Scotland in order to be called scotch whisky. I know I've heard of American blenders buying barrels of scotch whisky but there were all sorts of restrictions on labeling. I don't think scotch whisky could be included on their bottles or even the distillery name.
Ralfy, I recently bought an old bottle of springbank 15. When I opened it there was cork residue around the inside of the neck. There cork seems a little misshapen and there are small specs of cork floating around in it. Is this a reason to return it or is it fine?
I think a client would return the bottle, but a customer would keep it and enjoy its contents as any annorack would do. 40% alcohol or above is prohibitive for living by any bacteria standards so it should pose no risk drinking it. You may wany to filter it and put it in another clean bottle.
Love the Extra’s. Always wondered about pricing as well. What I mean is a Scotch 12 yr could cost $60 and a whiskey or bourbon from the state I live in cost the same with NAS. How is it a Scotch that ages 12 years then has to be packed and shipped to the US cost the same as something that is made here and NAS. ?? Makes me wonder. I mean I understand about demand but sometimes you just have to ask.
Hey Ralfy...With the pandemic I want to order whisky online. I know you talked about this in the past however I need to know where and how along with your advice to be able do this. Thanks for all you do ! Malt Mate Craig
. . . just search "whisky retailers" and take it from there. I don't advertise specific onliners.
Thank you as always sir ❤️
Ralfy - a question totally unrelated to this video: what's your view on "Chasers" ? I've always assumed they're used to make the whisky last longer at the bar, do you regard them as sacrilege?
Recently got a Springbank 12 CS 19 batch, but its a Taiwan ver. I'm wondering if its any different than the ones in other countries?
Prynhawn da Ralphy, fancy doing a few more Cognac/brandy tastings/videos? I’m a rum drinker that wants to dabble but have no idea where to start. Really like your rum video from poor -> great from time back, and have shared it to a few mates that’s struggle with rum whilst I’m not there. Cheers!
Hello from Texas, Ralfy! The Whisk(e)y Tribe sends its greetings as well! I have a question and dilemma on this Extras topic that I’m sure you can give insight on. I have been learning tons (including moderation wisdom) from your site and the Whiskey Vault here in Texas on drinking and understanding fine scotch single malts. My whiskey (bourbon) and whisky (scotch) budget is in place with my wonderfully “tolerant” wife and is now the source of my better scotch version dilemma. My whisky friends and purchases have resulted in basic familiarity with Caol Ila and Glen Grant. Upon reviewing several of your vlogs and Whiskey Tribe vlogs on these distilleries, my interest is piqued in both. But the budget will allow for one for now. What are your thoughts on these two offerings at a local store here for $70 each? The first, Glen Grant 15 in official bottling at Batch Strength at 50% while the second, a Gordon & MacPhail Caol Ila 10 Connoisseurs Choice bottled at 46%. Both are well kept and the store has about 12 of each in stock so, there is no immediate danger of either going out of stock soon. Do you have a suggestion on which to purchase first or thoughts on maybe passing on each? Should you like both, I could certainly purchase both over the next two budget cycles. Either way, I would like to put one in my cabinet soon but simply cannot decide on which based upon my current studies on each! Can you help a malt mate in Texas make up his whisky mind?? Much thanks for everything you do! You are enlightenment and entertainment wrapped into one much appreciated package! Well done and keep it coming, friend! Erik in Texas
. . . not sure on the versions your getting, so try whiskybase for advice. If the Caol Ila is decent, go for it. GlenGrant don't tend to make the most of their official bottlings, so it may be risky. I would go for the 2020 best U.S. bourbon if I were you www.ironrootrepublic.com/
The extras do have a bit more info. Ralfy , you sure know your stuff. I’ve bought or passed on bottles because of your reviews in the past, but lately I buy and taste on what I might think is dram for the “journey “. I’m just amazed that you can read 10k comments for every review.
The only Deanston I can get locally is the Virgin Oak.. not much of a fan. Looking forward to trying others at some point.
Hi Ralfy, have you managed to try any of the new Crabbie bottles out of Edinburgh? Undisclosed distillerys. They do an 8 year old and a 12 at 46 & 43% non-chill filtered. Rumour has it the 12 year old is a very tasty version of Highland park!
Caskology FTW
On a scale from 1 to 10 for the quality and content of your video, you're an 11. Thanks a lot for this great video, Ralf. Which is your favourite whisky on a budget?
Ralfy dear, just noticed it - is that a genuine, steampunked, Ralfy-approved alarm clock in the extreme right of the camera view?!!
I always watch Extras
The label paper on the 18YO looks to have colour added, the 12YO looks natural. Just saying it Malt Mates!
Did you mean Doune? Though I first thought of Pitlochry, but that's Edradour.
I'm pretty sure he means Callander 👍
The extras are like a PhD in whisky
Callander! Trinkets, tartan and overpriced whisky. Still, a nice drive in the car via the Dukes pass :-)
Not sure why you don't get as many views with these extras. I think they're just as informative as a bottle review.
Thanks for sharing Ralfy :-)
Mellifluous mirth maintainers. 😁
. . . now on the M-mention List. Thanks.
Callander?
Great video!
Got the 23 year old sherry matured and given that i love every other version from Deanston, was sorely disappointed with the 23. Gutted. That's part of the journey as you'd say yourself Ralfy.
Count me in as a big fan of the extras.
What was the place you were thinking of Ralfy?
I'd say it was Callander 👍
Love ya man!
Anyone else notice a kind of 'meowing' sound during the 2nd half? Ralfy, do you have pets?
Has anyone tried the Deanston 20 yr old cask strength? Thoughts?
in my opinion the 20yo Oloroso is the best original botteling from Deanston 🤘🏻😎
Thinking of getting a monthly whisky subscription, any thoughts on them, any suggestions
Oban, a rich mid palate due to the Worm Tub.
thx
