  • This is me and James doing a podcast style video on our recent trip to Cornwall. We take a look at Abandoned places in Cornwall. So I guess this is our guide to Industrial Cornwall. As well as all the obvious things like visiting the fishing villages in Cornwall like Newquay and Padstow we also visited the Eden project and The lost gardens of Heligan a very beautiful place. However we also wanted to look at the remains of Cornish Industry. This involved finding some old Cornish Tin and Copper mines or at least the mine engine house. We went up onto Bodmin moor and after looking at the River Fowey and the Golitha falls in some wonderful Corwall ancient woodlands we took a look at Wheal Jenkin Tin and Copper mine and then New Phoenix Tin mine. These Copper and Tin mines date back to around 1836 and were served by the now abandoned Cheeswring railway. Wonderful examples of Georgian architecture and old Engine houses. We also look at The Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash just outside Plymouth built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel

A good watch as always. Tintagel was reported to be the birth place of King Arthur, but going further back in time, the Romans called Great Britain "the tin isles" and that was why they wanted to conquer the land.

You were in my neck of the woods and didnt say hello? Did you know that they mined silver here in SE Cornwall? The first silver was taken out was made into a ring for Queen Victoria. The mine workings are still around with the shafts and the engine works. There are loads of mine workings here ( you should have taken James's advice and come round Gunnislake and crossed the Tamar at New Bridge. You would have come right past the silver mining valley - as well as arsenic, tin and copper). St Ozzle ( Austell) ...... sometimes called St Awful. But Charlestown is quaint. Glad you enjoyed yourselves and got around a bit.

Martin, why didn't you let me know 😭😭 I live 5 mins from the Eden project. A real shame as I could have taken you to the old engine houses and the turntable, maybe next time ??? . You see those stairs to the right of frame at 13:14 well people used to have to walk up those to get to the castle before the new bridge was built and yes that is supposed to be the spirit of King Arthur. No you are not being naive guys, there are some beautiful little fishing villages, Mousehole is one (pronounced Mowzul) or Portreath and quite a few others. Fowey is gorgeous (pronounced Foy). Martin, 5 mins by car from our house I can take you to a place where they had horses to pull the mine carts with the rails still there intact and other industrial buildings but you will need to walk though.
With the Engine Houses you saw at The Jenkin Mine, they were used for the Cornish Beam Engines to pump out water and to take the men up and down the shaft.
You could have gone to Helston and visited The Poldark Mine where they take you on a tour of the old mine and show you the tools etc used in mining.
Martin, did you not contact the owner with the contacts I gave you to do with the Turntable ??? I spent a year trying to get that for you and got you an open pass, what happened ?????. Sorry I haven't been around but on Feb 26th I was rushed to hospital with a very bad kidney infection, my kidneys were at 12% function, I have only been watching a reduced amount of channels video's but sometimes I didn't even comment as I have been recuperating as I nearly died that time.
Thank you for sharing, much love to you and James. xx ❤

Nice video guys, I love Cornwall. I went there with my parents has a child in the 60's, went to Tintagel too like you, then went back before I got married in the 70's. Anyway took my present wife there in 2011, what a fantastic place, she loved it too, stayed in St Ives. Did quite a bit of walking too, did the coastal walk which was fantastic. Only problem the wife got sunburnt feet the first day we were there.....lol. Go for quality any day with the video's, thanks again. Chris

Hi i wish i could have know you in the 2000 , i was a railway nurse and in rochdale ,i went every three months they made rail tracks , and of course i did their medicals as they worked on or near a running line in the big warehouse . By law they required to have medical to show they are fit to be near a running line . But close by in another warehouse they had steam Engines there too . i seem to remember there were at least four when i last went . and they brought them out every now and again. when the steam Engine restorers group.came down out they came .They were amazing ! but i left shortly after as the company i was working for lost the contract sadly . but i had some fun working for for the rail ways . i worked all around the country . the best was crewe i saw the Royal Train that was amazing too ,along with her Engine. my regards liz .

Yep, the engines would have been Newcomen beam engines with the beam sticking out of the wall
The engines were mostly used for pumping (though somee might be for 'man engines' )
They would pump water from the mines, some of which wass for boiler water, the rest would have been channelled away or sent through pipes, might explain the gulleys
The mines near the coast go down deep enough to go under the sea, they just followed the vein wherever it went.
A turntable with surrounding sheds in a curve is commonly known as a roundhouse, specially if the turntable is also covered with a roof, though Blazey hasn't got much of an arc of buildings.

We were in Cornwall in early August. And spent a day at Botallack.
I think the second set of buildings you went to at Wheal Jenkins were equivalent to what you would have seen at Botallack and we're therefore probably the furnace for processing ore after it's been smashed up on site and the flue was the equivalent to the arsenic maze at Botallack where the fumes from the furnace would have been routed through before going up the chimney so that the arsenic in the smoke would collect on the walls and then would be collected by workers. The 'engine room' and other buildings you saw at West Phoenix would probably have been where the machinery was to break up the ore before it went into the furnace and that maze like structure you went through in there after the engine room looks to me like that will have been their arsenic maze.
We went over the Brunel Bridge at Saltash by the way as in September 2022 we went to Cornwall on the sleeper from Paddington.

Great video, that old bridge was impressive - slap some lighting on there and make it safe for pedestrians and you get a nice attraction for locals or tourists. And I have visited bogs here with no buildings, just a bog with nature, so that place was really interesting too. First time someone gifted me a Guinness I thought that the plastic thing is some defect. Dark beer I find better, less bloating of the stomach.

Great to see your trip down to Cornwall, you saw a good mix what we have down here. Mines often had 3 mine engine buildings, a pump, a winding engine and a stamps to crush the ore. The steam engines were Richard Trevithick high pressure engines and he also made the first steam car which famously went 'Up Camborne hill'

I can tell you an odd tale of synchronicity about Brunel's Albert Bridge: in 2007, my brother and I went to Cornwall to visit his daughter/my niece. Both our parents died within a couple of years of each other, and we both wanted a few days change of scenery. Anyhow, my brother flew there, and I had always fancied taking a train along that astonishing route built for the GWR by an all-time hero of mine, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It did not disappoint. Worth every penny of the fare. Anyhow. Got there, had a marvellous week. My brother went home a day before me, and the next day, I'm on the train, approaching Saltash, and the River Tamar, crossed by Brunel's wonderful bridge. My mobile rings. It's my brother, who explains he's in the pub, and they are doing a weekend lunchtime quiz, and the following happens:
TIM (my brother) Hello, bro. What's the name of Brunel's bridge over the Tamar?
ME: What, the Prince Albert Bridge I'm just about to go over, you mean?
    TIM: What the f**k?
I hung up, and took a short video to prove it, which I immediately sent him. He was proper freaked out by that.
Anyhow. Corker of a video, gents. Tidy. 👍👍👍

The Engine houses were used for four jobs, to power the pumps, winder, stamps and rarely a man engine. It's a shame you didn't come further west, in the Camborne Redruth area there are two enginhouses with the engines still inside, there is also a mining museum at the King Edward mine. On the way to Helston is Poldark mine lots to look at and an underground trip. Then near Botallack there is Geevor mine museum and Levant mine with a working steam engine plus a look down the man engine shaft. Look after yourselves fewer videos are better than none. God bless

@ 4.30. Its a drainage adit from probably a tin mine, a lot of adits in Cornwall run directly onto the beaches.

"Wheal" - Cornish for work/workings; there's a lot of them on the map round there. A shame you didn't have time in Plymouth to see the Torpoint chain ferry, plus the Palmerston Forts around Plymouth, some of which you can urbex quite easily. Anyway - glad you had a good break!

This was very different but far from a nightmare! Loved the opening sequence with James plunging into the water in St Austell harbour... talk about drop like a stone..... 🤣 Whale roots indeed! Thank goodness that's the bod shots over for the year! Bodmin moor, one of my most favourite places on earth. It has an atmosphere that's hard to explain. Glad to see you did that! Really enjoyable! 👍

Your right Martin, the huge rocking beams pivoted on the walls on special pivot points, outside rods going down hundreds of feet lifting water, the inside connected to the as you said Newcomen atmospheric engines, very low steam pressure poss 4-7 lbs sq in.

Nice holiday vid lads, was ya not tempted to do a bit of river larking along that river where the old mineshaft was, I know we would of 😂 Glad ya cleared the filming up, mentioning ya was using ya phone and not the GoPro, I was wondering. Does anyone ever recognise ya when ya out and about filming? and do ya work mates know you run a channel. Cornish tea in short, Corny Tea, only good thing that ever came out of Yorkshire, was the tea 😂

On the Saltash side of the bridge is the Union Inn. Next to the Inn is a statue of Brunel himself.
