Hello Future Me when is the third httyd movie?
My theory is that night Furies lay eggs on mountains so that they have a better change of getting struck by lightning, which means a better chance to hatch.

Getting the egg to hatch by being struck by lightning actually makes a lot if sense, seeing as how the book Hiccup reads says that Nightfuries are "the spawn of lightning and Death itself."

The 'death' part is most likely a simple reference to the Night Furies being considered as a very lethal species of dragon, something Toothless has backed up throughout the franchise.
Look at it this way:
'The unholy offspring of lightning and death itself' = Born through lightning and incredibly lethal.
TooMuchFreeTime I believe that it means the offspring of Thor the God of lightning and the God of death (I don't know who he is in there religion)

So when the night furies realized this, they think the sea dragons might steal the egg, so they need to hide them in the safe mountains
I feel like it's way simpler they lay there eggs up in the mountains because they need lighting so they need need to be high up lol

@my dad left me it's not a female night fury,toothless is the last of the night furys. It is a light fury that toothless meets and toothless decides to mate with the light fury and make the species the night light. Which is when a night fury and light fury mate. (Sorry if you get mad at this spoiler)

In httyd race to the edge last episode when the bewilderbeast called *ALL* dragons we didn’t sed any night furies
THEORY!! What if Toothless was born on Berk? Like where Gothi's house was on OG Berk before her home was built and he had no siblings but around 1 year of living on the mountain a screaming Death group of 3 came and killed His parents before his mom died she told him to run/fly away and find safety in the green deaths volcano before her mind was corrupted as the years went by Toothless came of age (around 14) and sent to gather pray for his Queen for the first time but on his first try to get pray he was shot but Hiccup and that my friend is how the unbreakable bond was made 😊

Here is a somewhat interesting question, why is the sand wraith not a strike class? Threw what i have seen threw out the games such as rise of berk and school of dragons sand wraiths are very fast and have a very interesting fire type and they have a very interesting way of hunting. There bodies even remind us of a night fury, so why is it classified as a tidal class?

Meteo Guy that no one cares about I believe that Sand Wraiths have evolved enough from Night Furies that now they are in a different class, tidal class.
Some traits of Night Furies are still present but the way of hunting, and colour make it quite different.

However, I still have a question. The "safe" mountains are not that safe. There are still other dangerous dragons there, so why do they hide it in mountains? Oh ya, also, why specifically the mountains? They could have hid it on a different island

Great Dragon lightning is attracted to objects that are taller and higher up in elevation so this would explain why.

I think in the third one toothless will meet another nightfury and becomes close with them and by the end of the movie hiccup Decides toothless is better off with his own kind and they’ll go separate ways 😭I will be sad cause they have an unbreakable bond but it will be good for toothless to be with another night to help save there species

You know, the higher up you are, the easier it is to get struck by lightning. Soooo.....maybe that’s why Nightfury eggs stay on top of mountains.

Because throughout all the series toothless is literally the only proof his race exists in the 1st movie there are no pictures bones statistics or even description of night furys to prove they even exist dagur even doubted they existed at all so they assumed they were never killed due to lack of evidence they were even seen by people

i think Night Fury live in the opposite habitat of what you said. I would rather say that based on their behavior the Night Fury, is a dragon that lives in the upper north, in very cold climates and they lived in high altitudes like big mountains. you had a very good theory with the Whispering death rivalry, but to support my theory this are the facts i think make Night Furys live the habitat i mentioned. first is the fact that in the migration toothless sleep in the roof, outside, in the cold, actually he went to swim in the cold water to search Hiccup's helmet. Also the habit of burn the floor where he sleeps could tell us that Night Furys do it to warm themselves. Night Furys are excellent divers, attacking the low ground or things near the floor, as toothless attacks the catapults of berk, so this could be because thats how they attack other threats like a whispering death coming out of the ground. They are also experts in the art of flying, so this could tell they like beeing very high in the air, like you said, and dive to the sea to catch fish, this could make that the Night furys occupied the heights and the whispering death the low ground, so they have to take care of the babies in the mountains out of their jaws, like you said, but instead of fighting for habitat they could live in the same one but the whispering deaths underground to avoid the cold, and the Night Furys up in the mountains because they like it.
ou..and i just remembered something that support my theory, and is that in the second movie we see that thoothless can hide underneath the snow, maybe they sleep there in the day to not be seen (because they are black and nocturne) this actually could cause the encounters against the whispering death 😱😱

it has bright blue patterns and they have purple at the bottom of their eggs

their mothers abondon the eggs when they freeze, before they hatch

their tail wings change colour,in different territories

at the age of 20 they can form star fury packs
if a male star fury comes near its egg it will be attacked by the female and 5% survive
they travel to a cave in the breeding season (summer)

if they layed a egg anywhere that isnt near a cold place,they egg will die
if a regular night fury lays a star fury egg they will get purple eyes
the offspring will have normal night fury eyes if it is a normal nightfury mother
when male star furies are born they find the nearest forest to seek mates
male star furies also breed with other dragons but only 1% of the eggs live
recorded cross breeds: Starfury-Sandwraith,shockjaw,skrill,changewing,deadly nadders.
if a adult star fury flies toward the sun or the moon they will evaporate and become another dragon egg.

KK The Killer Whale 44 its rare two species could mate and produce viable offspring if they where to mate the egg would be infertile.Successful cross breeding only happens when the two species are closely related and even then offspring most likely can't mate or have some kind of genetic problem.

This actually also makes sense for the light fury, maybe all night furies are born brown and spend early development in the forest and then the males move to the caves where the black pattern makes sense, but the females turn white as they reach maturity and move to snow capped mountains to lay their eggs and protect them until it’s time to move them to the very peak of the mountain

Maybe he puts eggs on mountains because the egg is made out of some kind of plasma, and Toothless's plasma blast explodes at high altitudes. That might explain why they explode.

Another idea on why the night fury would lay it's egg on a mountain top so it can hatch from lightning is the skrill. The night fury and skrill being evolutionary divergents, enemies as they are, could have some more evolution as an insurance to their survival, such as the night fury needing lightning to hatch could be an advantage if a skrill tied to destroy the nest. And, maybe the skrill developed the same evolutionary need in having to have a night fury's high-energy blast to hatch. The development of these needs would show a way of evolution bringing these two divergent species back together. But I might be wrong.
Also lightning is attractive to metal and the highest points, so by putting the egg up high it is more likely to get struck than it being lower

Hey I think they lay it sooo high because (you are right ) to protect it from predators but also to blend in with the night sky since they are black and very small so even a eagle would have troubles trying to see it

It's possible, but keep in mind the Skrill does that. The nightfury and skrill really don't have much in common.

@Hello Future Me I have some Night fury questions that are bothering me:
1. When a night fury charges up a plasma blast does it come out of a hole in the back of the mouth or does it form and ignites inside the mouth cavity?
2. If Night furies and Light furies are related do they share a common ancestor?
3. What does the plasma blast gland of a Night fury look like?
4. Did Grimmel the grizzly give Drago Bludvist a Night fury skin cape?
5. How did a Night fury end up in the Red death’s large flock of dragons?
6: is it possible that Night furies can fire their plasma as a straight beam to carve out nests in the rocks on the mountain like a plasma cutter?
And lastly 7. Is it possible that male Night furies and Light furies can change into a female when there’s no female present?
Maybe the reason Night furies can take high level blasts is because they have to have that resistance from when they are born
1:40 that's easy just like how some fish swim from the ocean into freshwater to lay their eggs so do the night furies migrate to their breeding grounds in order to lay their eggs and hatch their babies
If anyone has seen the 1st movie, you can see Toothless flying behind the scenes in the introduction & the DreamWorks logo!
Also because the eggs explode it would be common for the hatching to cause caveins which would kill most of them

There is a video on RUclips called "How to train your dragon 3" that shows a night fury (possibly Toothless) flying on his very own and with his whole entire tail.

What if a nightfurie is a hybrid dragon, that would explane why there are so little of them. 1 half skrill and some other dragon.
One reason nightfury might lay in mountain tops is because it will be easier for an electrical storm to hatch the egg

It makes sense that Night Furies have their eggs somewhere else, and are native to somewhere else. In the Christmas special "The Gift of the Night Fury", Toothless didn't go with the other dragons (Native to the Archipelago) to the island they had their eggs, and I'm not too sure if this has anything to do with it, but he did take a bit longer coming back home than the other dragons ( because he also got hiccups helmet back from the ocean)
I think skrills and Night Furies might have a symbiotic relationship because skrills follow electrical storms around and night furies need lightning to hatch the skrill could shoot lightning at the eggs to make them hatch and the night furies could help take care of the skrills egg or just not attack the skrill's eggs cause night furies are one of the only dragons that can take the skrill on head to head.
If Night Furies needed electrical storms to hatch, it would be inviting the Skrill to a free meal!
