Seeing the rat race of people trying to buy more expensive and newer gear has made me appreciate the retro aesthetic so much. It got the job done for decades and it still does to this day all over the world.
Retro is what it is; older technology. Retro is fine until it runs into more modern technology (evolution and innovation) and then to keep up, the user of retro (hardware) has to compensate with more skill (software) in order to be competitive with modern (hardware).
The last two months of my afghan deployment my m14 was damaged so I was issued a bare bones m4 with only a rear flip up sight. It was awesome, served every need that I had. Civilian gun owners get so wrapped up in fantasy land, when in reality all you need is something light weight that can lay down cover fire. I’d say 80% of the rounds I fired in 2010 were unaimed shots from the shoulder while I yelled orders and cussed at the taliban. Alot of dudes have been killed with junky cheap old weapons lol. That being said I love buying stupid shit for my rifles too! Lol

My 10.5 PSA has a way canted front sight, like so off I almost have to max out the rear to the left. But at the same time it was a $340 kit that has never jammed with brass or steel and has perfect 3:00 ejection. They are good when they’re good but PSA has shit quality control so you have to put rounds through it and make sure the one you get is quality before relying on it.
Had had a similar issue. I took a mini sledge to it. I can use the irons now at 50 with the rear windage skewed a bit. Then again, it's a beater so I beat it.
Having the same issue with 1 psa upper but I messaged psa and they responded in less then 2 days, sent me a ups label to send it back to swap it out. I have 2 other psa uppers both solid, no issues.

Retro is rad. All of my builds got that early 2000s m4 or m16a3 vibes and I couldn't be more pleased with my collection. I focus more on practical use than tactical toolbag. Basic is good. Iron sights are underrated.
I did this same thing multiple times over. Love the concept. I use them for Trunk/Truck guns... that way if something ever happens to it.. it wont hurt as much losing/damaging it. Had a cool looking gun that I had no idea how to shoot well. Then I wanted a quality one after I finished! Instead I started to train with it, put a decent amount of rounds down range and sold it to some young guy who was just like me a few years prior for basically what I had into it.
Good stuff. I’d argue that a cheaper red dot and a Pic rail fore-end will add a lot of capability for a marginal increase in price. A 2 MOA dot will allow not just increased CQB capability but medium range as well since the dot doesn’t obscure the target like an iron site does. Target focused, both eyes open shooting is another advantage over irons. You can’t beat an Aimpoint PRO for the money. It even comes with a mount. The Pic rail fore-end will cost a little but will make mounting accessories a lot easier. Streamlight Protac HL-X is cheap, mounts directly to the pic rail, and comes with a pressure switch if you want that ability.
I did one of these builds even more shoestring than PSA. All upper and lower parts were sourced individually, got the clamp-on FSB, and even a carbine-length skinny handguard cut down from a rifle-length handguard, in the spirit of the earliest CAR-15s. It was awesome until it was destroyed in a range accident. Guns like that are great Designated Steelcase Rifles, just run the crap out of them until they are smoothbores and then hang them in your shower for that day when the bad guy bursts in and wants to get down and dirty with you from like 2 feet away.
What no one that uses white light in Close quarters talks about ( was a flight cadre) is that your fancy 800 t2 will get flushed out unless on a setting of 9 or higher with white light … so having irons actually works really well in that little niche
Those brownells car-15 reproduction stocks are really nice, KAC makes a sling QD attachment point you can add on if you're feeling like a baller on a budget.
PSA has ramped up their production, so manufacturing being what it is, more products = more units with oddities/problems. It's part of the process, but it became the focus of buyers. PSA is solidly in the middle: not a HK416, not a High Point. First thing is SIGHTS or an optic, then WHITE light, then sling, then goodies as you see fit.
I think full-sleeve tattoos are part of the cool package. For quick cool, purchase the tight shirt with full-sleeve tattoos on them that can be taken off after the cool shooting session. That way, the tattoos can be laundered separately.
An alternative idea with a cheap AR: Drag it around to scrape it up, wrap some camo tape around the stock for no particular reason, and call it something like "the beater". No one will notice the cheaper ar through the rifles well used costume.
Generally when people ask me what's a good AR build for a new guy I tell them an A2 flat top build because as vanilla as it is, it simply works and is reasonably priced. I tell them to get an A2 and fine tune it from there to their needs and specifications after shooting it for a bit.
If it’s for home defense then the sling can be more harm than good. It could get in the way or snag on furniture while maneuvering through the house. Outside shooting sure but budget wise use money for more ammo or towards dot. A lot of dots under $100
Check for any forge marks on the A2 detachable handle, not all are marked but if it is you can work out where it originated from, also not all are alike in regards to the adjustments and if suited for use with F marked FSBs.
I always here people saying ammunition as the most important upgrade and training is very important. Anyone else have an issue with finding a range that allows non-static training with rapid fire like I have. All the ammo in the world won't do $hit for me as I have to stand, fire 1 round every 1-3 seconds and it's just not really doing anything for me. I've tried out roughly 20 ranges and they're all the same. The only ones offering what I'm looking for are expensive members only clubs that averages $150 a month for membership. I'm not really looking to spend $1,800 ($1500 a year if paid in full) on a membership. I guess you get what you pay for but damn... I would like to find a place that would just let me present a weapon from low ready and maybe let me take a few steps and record my brass ejection on new builds.
