My Butters was given to me a week ago from my local petsmart. They know me there as the rat Momma and they had a rat that was biting everyone and couldn't go in with any other rats and therefore couldn't be sold.
But I was in getting betta fish food and they stopped me to see if I could do anything with this "problem rat". I immediately scooped her up and they were shocked. "She didn't bite you" I'm like she doesn't have a reason to. We brought here home. And she did bite both of us pretty much immediately, almost like it was a test or marking mommy and daddy. But now she's the sweetest little girl ever. She also gets along with my other girls in freerun.
She's probably only 2 months old, she's still quite small. But even though she was called mean by the petsmart people she's one of my sweetest girls.

I hope my rats will be so used to me and movement like your babies are with you...I wa snot able to find a breeder local, so I got 3 from our lical pet store (not petsmart) and they are not too fearful, they come to the door and eat outta my hand but the babies then bolt lol
you should get a bonding scarf, they are invaluable for bonding with the wee babes. I use bonding scarf even for my good socialized boys because it just makes it even easier to bond with them. the best place for best quality would be etsy, look for the giant cloth donut type. if you can sew they're easy to make, i just followed a youtube vid and slightly modified the size to be what i want (54 in long, 16in wide, with 22in of elastic)
Give it a bit of time and use high-value treats to help them see that interacting with you = yummy treats and fun and you'll have rattos who will come running any time they see you. I use baby food (the meaty ones like chicken and turkey are big hits) and nonfat plain yogurt. For my shy/nippy babies, I start with putting the treat on a metal spoon (so they can't accidentally bite a piece of it off) and whenever they get close to me, I offer the treat. (Hold onto that spoon because they *will* try to run off with it. 😂) Once they get used to the treat spoon, I start putting a small amount on the back of my hand or on a knuckle as they can get a bit overzealous and bite your finger pretty hard accidentally.
Spending as much time with them as you can really helps cement the bond as well. Good luck with your furry chaos potatoes! 💙💚🤘🏻

@@kerseykrewzoo I actually just started that, got some oh so stinky meat gerber baby food and seeing what we can accomplish :) My 2 babies are a little nippy but they don't hurt me. I am grateful to your advice, thank you :) Guess I just need to be patient ;)
I’m guessing you realized that the zipper hammock can also be zipped the other way into a tunnel…? Check the back of the Ratty Box info card, it gives info on the three ways to use the zipper hammock (flat, pouch and tunnel).

my boys never like the treats nor the luffa chews but they generally love the hammocks/hides and some of their all time fave hammocks have come from ratty box
My girls would like to trade for the treats lol - I think they would sell their souls for just one of those rascal nutriberry things!

What is the cheapest way to give my rats good chewing and nesting opportunities.... as I spoke my Butters grabbed ahold of my toilet paper I use as tissues and made a mess on my bed....
Butterscotch(Butters) is now using that toilet paper to make a nest in the pillows on my bed..... how can I make them more comfortable?
Especially if I can't put them with other rats and they have to be alone
