OSU!!! Gichin Funakoshi is truly a great (if not the greatest) figure of Karate. He helps to bring awareness to Karate which now the whole world can enjoy. Even though I am not learning Shotokan style, I still feel thankfull to his great contribution to Karate as a whole. Truly a hero. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for this documented slideshow on Funakoshi O Sensei. At age 40 and on the verge of earning my black belt in Shotokan, I had begun to feel wistful about not starting karate earlier in my life. But your video reminded me that Funakoshi moved to Japan at age 54 and that karate-do is a lifetime commitment from when you start, whenever you start. Arigato gozaimasu.
one of his sayings are (the ultimate aim of the art of karate lies not in victory or defeat but in the perfection of the character of it's participants) that was really wise of him.
Great video! I'm a life long martial arts student. I've studied Kempo for many years, but I've always found Japanese martial arts, especially Karate-Do fascinating. There is something to learn by the "simplicity" that Karate-Do demonstrates. It takes out all the "fancy" stuff and keeps the solid core of martial arts-it remains raw, pure, powerful and effective. It reminds me of the saying "Less is More". Very Inspiring.
great video i study butokukan karate rather than shotokan but during our tests we are drilled on the history and tradition of the karate founders and we always pay respect to Mr. Funakoshi as the founder of modern karate. i really enjoyed being able to put a face with the legendary name. OSU!
@KendoWaza Sir Great video on one of Okinawa's great Martial Arts master. In the video is stated Mr. Funakoshi changed the name of Karate (or Tang/Chinese Hand) to Karate (empty hand) but he was a part of a group of Okinawan Karate Masters; Mr. Chojun Miyagi, Mr. Choshin Chibana, Mr. Chomo Hanashiro and others who thought it would be help with the promotion of their art to mainland Japan if the meaning of the kanji/plus the kanji was changed. Thank you for sharing this video. Osu

Well done indeed! It is interesting to note that a few of the 1955 pictures are of and from Tomosaburo Okano and the KenKoJuku Dojo - OSS!!
Be surprised that shotokan itself was originally a mixed martial art since Master Funakoshi blended shourin ryu and shourei ryu.
I m learning his style currently.
I was like 8 years old now i'm 14 and i want to practice karate again but i lose a lot of physical condittion and i love allí japanese history btw
