Not sure if you mentioned it, but you can switch between standard and stretched screen by using one of the little buttons on the top. Second small button from the left on top.
I've had it for about a year and really like it. My only complaint is that some cartridges are hard to get in and out. My OCD collector brain worries it will scratch up stickers on carts. I have heard some of the black Tengen NES cartridges don't work, but I don't have all of them to try.
I don't know seems like a strange device, who wants to play their og nes carts? When you can just emulate, and this will have lag anyways, it's not a crt. It's a portable device but not portable with nes carts, but I guess some will find use for it, not me.
It's a lot of fun and using the OG cartridge is the fun part. I use emulators as well on various devices, but I like being able to actually use my NES collection :)
I've seen this device's box on shelves, I didn't know what it was and just assumed it was some knock off emulation device. But the fact it can take real cart is kinda cool. I've had an SNES handheld for years that doesn't really get enough use, but it is kinda cool even if not perfect, generally just packing an actual console + cables is no more or less of a hassle than doing that. But I can certainly see a use case if you're someone who goes to conventions or flea markets alot and want to test games before buying or display them for sale.
Nice video John, recently I picked up a Neo Geo Pocket Color and was wondering if you have some good recommendations for games I should pick up thank you take care
@ Cool sounds like some good stuff on there, I wish some of the games were cheaper but I guess that’s what happens with a fairly large demand and low supply :(
The form factor of this device seems pretty terrible. I expected it would have at least a 4:3 panel. The Gamestation Retro Go might be a better solution when they release it. Although that does not support original cartridges.
@@tribblegirl2 That's not my point. I just prefer having a display that keeps the wasted space at a minimum for the systems I want to use. And they're pretty much all 4:3. And also, the product can be smaller overall and still have bigger viewable area.
@@johnhancockretro That's a shame that it does not work. The only NES clone hardware that I have seen run an EverDrive is Hyperkin's Retron 1, 2 and 3 (Game Saves, but no Save States or FDS games).
@@8bitjoystick Emulation based consoles does not work with everdrives. I suspect the Hyperkin 3 in 1 are a NOAC (NES-on-a-chip) based, so that's why it works.
Let’s be honest this thing sucks. Can’t use other controllers aside from the one provided… please. And that sound is just awful. Okay idea, poor execution.
Have you tried the Hyperkin RetroN 5. I found it a great way to play old carts from NES, SNES, Famicom, Genesis GBA all to an HDMI display using original pads. Is there any way I can get a physical version of Tortoises in the UK?
Basically, the only alternative (in 2025) is Columbus Circle -delightful to some, disappointing to others. Powkiddy, Anbernic, etc., did not move in this direction. They moved away from it.
Personally, I've been such a sucker for the Japanese import famicom clones made by Columbus Circle so it's interesting to see some thing made for a US market.
Imagine asking for $120 for this garbage, lol. Sound is off, color is off, mandatory proprietary controller that comes seperate, and as a handheld its every bit as clunky and uncomfotable as using an actual tablet. This should be no more than $49.99 at most.
I'll be honest with you bro BGM while your talking and showing me something like an unboxing is unpleasant to digest, it's really too loud, but honestly I would prefer 0 music while your speaking and showing me a physical thing like an unboxing.
As of posting this video, this is on sale for $99.
yah you need to make atari 50 update cancel video. that crap pissed a lot of people off
No amount of positivity in the world is going to convince me to buy this thing. $120? It looks like it's from the late 90s, early 2000s.
it's a lot of fun, and if you don't have an original NES console, it's one of the best replacements I've played.
@@tribblegirl2not when the avs exists?? Are you ok?
Looks kinda like a giant 2DS. :D
@@c.vergara570????
haha, accurate observation. We have both.

This console is using the same asic that's been around for the past 20+ years. Castlevania III doesn't work and sound is wrong.
I hadn’t seen or heard anything about this device in a long time. Great video John!
It’s been around for a while but new to me :)
When MyArcade showed off their new Atari handheld, I recognized that it's styled a lot like the Retro Champ
The music on these games are awesome
Nah dog head cauliflower
John Hancock 🎉❤
The game music sounds so bad when the game is played, so different!

What a cool-looking device. For $120, I think it's a good deal. So worth it. Thanks for the video, John!
On sale for $99 right now.
Handheld time with John Hancock
Love retro game 🎮 ❤

That is an excellent point. Not why I use this thing, but I should be bringing it with.
Thanks
You’re welcome!
It's time for an IJH twin-stick shooter on the NES

Cardfighters clash remember is good as well as the samurai showdown game. Metal Slug 1 and 2 for it.

I suspect that the availability of 16:9 panels is so much easier to acquire, that is why you see that here.
@@johnhancockretro 8" panels (with 1024x768 resolution) are quite easy to find at aliexpress. I wonder if this handheld could be modded to fit one in.

Very interesting system for sure!
Oh man, if it doesn't run US Castlevania 3 it's definitely not gonna run Akumajou Denestsu. I am assuming the EverDrives are out.

It’s a nice way to test out and play with NES cartridges without having to dig out and connect the entire NES.
Could be better, yes.

Sound is terrible
The sandbox is too warm
Do you have the Hyperkin NES Portable System FC Mobile II? I wonder which one would be better. There both portable NES.
