Tommy finished a few fights in his career with a left to the body,, the power he had in that left was rare and truly impressive.
I met Yuri some time ago in Atlantic City, New Jersey and he mentioned this fight. Said he felt confident going in that he could outlast him but a few of Tommy's shots knocked the wind out of him and he started boxing out of his style, thinking he couldn't go the distance anymore.
Cool. Vaulin seemed like a good guy. Humble. I tell ya, a good body shot hurts worse than anything to the face. You hit a guy right, in the liver or the solar plexus, you can short-circuit his whole body. Old Mike McCallum was so good with body work, nobody wanted to fight him, lol.
I meet him in Atlantic City too, did he wear a yellow hat when you meet him?
He was my trainer. Great boxer and great guy

Morrison looked like he was partying the night before the fight.
Morrison looked very vulnerable in this one.
Steve Rakes I think he said he was dealing with a leg injury in this fight and his right hand was messed up.

Tommy always said his idols were Marciano and Floyd Patterson, but you can see he mimicked Tyson so much with several things he did. He threw the 6-4 (Right Hook to body, followed by Right uppercut up the middle) combo as Tyson did. He wore the towel with hole cut in it to the ring. Doing the same neck tick that Tyson did while they doing introductions.

Morrison liked to drink the night before a fight and it showed, Vaulin didn't like working his core and it showed.
I was at camp with yuri training for this fight...in my opinion ..it was the head shots that hurt him bad...im sure the body shots hurt em but those head shots were bombs!!

@JosephPaladion I'm curious, because Tommy Gallagher said "we had Seamus McDonough" as a sparring partner, who hit Vaulin with all kinds of body shots. My question is, did McDonough hit Vaulin with full-power *uppercuts* to the body. Because that's what Morrison did, and let me tell you, that's one hell of an effective punch.

@@presence5426 Seamus was at camp..Him and Derick Isaman (might be spelled wrong..a Heavyweight with a record of something like 8 and 0..or 9 and 0) were his 2 sparring partners.. it was a long time ago..i don't remember the sessions to much..Seamus wasn't strong as Morrison..isaman was a strong guy..both of them split the rounds..so he did get alot of sparring..Yuri had Morrison hurt and should've followed up better
@@josephpaladion235 Yeah. I've seen Seamus fights, and he looks strong. But Morrison had elite power and velocity. No matter what Gallagher said. Sparring ain't like a real fight anyway.
for those who claimed that Morrison had a glass chin take a look at round 3.... Wasn't a chin made of steel but he can also take some shots.
Chin was 6.8/10
Tommy's ability to stay on his feet came down to conditioning in my opinion. He did all of this while partying more than training in many cases. Had he trained like he did for the Foreman fight before every fight he would've developed into something truly special to see , like the Michael Bent Fight he had partied the night before the fight. Once you get winded its 100x harder to stay on your feet like in the Mercer fight Tommy was just exhausted , you already want to sit down when your that tired. When he trained properly he was unstoppable never got dropped and was undefeated , he only had 3 losses in fights that the press had proven he did not properly train for. Still an amazing run for the Heavyweight Division he was a natural athlete
@@Capital2x Agree his Chin problems had more to do with his gas tank and subsequent slack in his jaw (making it vulnerable) then his actual Chin. That said he def did not have a MERCER or Foreman world class chin by any means.

he got dropped by Ruddock, Purity (2x), light hititing Carl Williams (2x), Bent (3x), blown away by Lewis and Mercer. Wouldnt say thats a good chin

These commentators, talking all that crap about tommy in the first couple rounds. Tommy had the potential and power to end that fight at any point. As he did.
I remember watching this live on tv. Yuri was slapping Tommy all over the ring. Yuri took Tommy`s best punch to the chin but couldn`t take one to the body.

He did have a glass jaw. Was dropped by journeyman three times and got knocked down twice by Carl Williams of all people.
Yuri has " faster hands " !
Whats crazy is if Valuin had kept tonhis early game plan he may well have been able to outpoint and win. He needed to keep circling and jabbing. In and out. Just like Morrison would do to Foreman. Jab jab jab, 1-2 combo back out to jab. Let tommy throw the long hook and then 4 punch combo.

Нехватка опыта профессиональных боёв Ваулину.Думаю,в реванше Ваулин бы его на молекулы разложил,как в первых раундах
По-хорошему данный бой показывает как советская школа бокса деклассировала в плане техники американский проф.бокс. Если бы у Юрия был более грамотный тренер, то он бы затащил этот бой и карьера бы по-другому сдожилась.
@@pashaprovodnik6912 советская школа бокса это мистификация, она никогда и не была на одном уровне с американской, даже рядом не стояла в плане техники.
Ваулина выбил из колеи только один сокрушительный удар Томми и заставил его играть не по своим правилам.
Самая большая проблема Ваулина в этом бою ,это нет силового нокаутирующего удара ,без этого в этом весе никуда.

Yuri Vaulin could have been a good heavyweight. He has natural hand speed, athleticism, and probably good stamina. He just needed lots of training and to pack on 15-20 lbs of muscle.
Vaulin wouldn't stop abusing that clinch, just annoying to watch.
VAULIN WAS FIGHTING TWO GUYS PATTERSON AND MARCIANO BY THE 5 ROUND FLOYD LEFT THE RING AND ROCKY ENTERED THE RING WITH BODY SHOTS SO MUCH FOR VAULINS CHESS GAME BOXING.

Yuri clearly was beating Tommy to the punch until those body shots. I’m thinking Mercer watched this fight because Mercer did to Tommy what Yuri did, only better.
