  • Baby rabbits need to be kept warm. The mother will usually do this by covering them with a layer of fur that she has pulled from her dewlap. But what if the mother didn't pull any fur? There are a few ways that you can deal with it.

    This was very helpful. My doe just had her kits while I was away, and she didn't pull any fur. She's a very nice, docile rabbit. I can usually touch her and pet her, but she wouldn't let me pull any fur from her dewlap. Her kits were almost frozen to death when I came home, thankfully I was able to warm them up, and they started moving. I started looking for ways to keep them warm, and your video helped a lot. They are now cozy and warm.

    I try to pull a small amount of fur from every nest and put it in a plastic bag for such times. I have had to use it before and it has always worked so far.

    It is pretty cold here (~35 as a high yesterday and high teens at night right now) and we unexpectedly had a litter on the way. I watched several of your videos and saw the pregnancy signs so we were ready with a nest box for the kits when they came three days ago. But last night we were getting some big gusts of wind and I heard things blowing out in the yard, so we ran out to check and secure what was blowing and wanted to peek in on the rabbits to make sure they were ok. I am so glad we did because one baby had fallen out and was right near the nest and was wriggling and was still warm. We scooped it up and put it back in the nest. We did a quick head count and saw we were still missing one. A panicked search and we found the missing baby about 3 feet from the nest and down a level from the cage it should have been in! (We have a larger rabbit pen/house with separate hutches/enclosures for the rabbits with an area for the mother to get out and stretch/play during the day. My question is, everything I read says mother's don't move their young. But how in the world did this poor little guy make it out of the nest, out of the cage, down the ramp, and two feet from where it should have been!?!
    Sadly, the kit was cold and limp. We still tried everything we could think of or had read along with lots of prayers, but it was too late. Have you ever seen anything like this? Could the kit have been latched on to eat and mother rabbit left mid-feed and baby came out too? Feeling pretty bad about it and hoping to prevent any other deaths. TIA

      I am sorry to hear about that. Unfortunately, that isn't that uncommon and you do lose one from time to time. Don't be too upset with yourself about it. It is quite possible that the baby got pulled away from the nest while feeding. Once there he probably squirmed around a lot and just ended up where you found him. It isn't a super common occurrence but is something that happens every once in a while. Without seeing your set up, it is hard for me to say exactly what you could do to help prevent it from happening again. If you don't already, you might see if you can find some cage wire to partially block off the section that goes from the nest box to the play area. Enough so the mother can jump over it but it will hold babies inside if they get pulled out of the nest.

    Had a doe have a litter this morning and hardly pull any hair. We’re having a very warm spell for January here but it was -2 just a couple weeks ago. I tore up a bunch of cotton balls and covered them up (she bit the crap out of my elbow) So I’m hoping she keeps them all warm! I don’t even know if she was done kindling because she was still dripping blood drops around and hopping in and out of her nest.

    I have a doe (literally just started my small rabbitry) who didn't pull fur, starved her kits and was peeing and pooping all over her babies in the nest box, you could tell they were starving and they were covered in pee and poop every day. I had to clean them every day, only to find them in the same condition the next. They eventually died at few days old. She's an awful mom! My other doe is great, her babies are fat and well fed. Mom is actually bald underneath because she pulled so much hair!! But the doe in question is about to go to camp kenmore. How many chances should she get to be a good mom? She was born in may 2020. Advice is sincerely appreciated!

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  3 года назад +2

      That sounds like a terrible mother for sure. I would give her another chance if that was her first litter just to see if she does better on the next litter. Sometimes rabbits just don't know what to do the first time around but if it happens again I would count her out. I hope that helps. And good luck with your rabbitry.

    So this morning I found a baby, 8 days old out of the box and honestly thought it was dead. Stiff and cold. I rubbed its little body and hurried inside. I put a warm wash cloth in a zip lock and got the poor little thing warmed up. It finally started moving.
    I was praying.
    So i've put the baby back in the nest now. I marked the head with a marker so I can check on it later. Did I do right right putting the baby back in the nest as quickly as possible?

    Love ur video's so got into rabbits myself' it's been very rewarding so far, but I have a little problem my first time mum has chewed up to to back feet of one of her babies what do I do ?? I have 4 of females and a buck in a colony and all 4 are trying to use the same nest box even though i have 7 boxes in the enclosure any advice

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  3 года назад

      Oh no, I am sorry to hear that. I think it is best to probably dispatch the one with the chewed up back feet. That is probably just first time mom mistakes and it shouldn't be a concern going forward. I am afraid I don't have any good advice for the nest boxes though. That is one reason I raise in cages and not in a colony. Just easier to control things. You can try to move the existing litter to a new nest box if you want. It won't bother the mother and maybe that will free up the one the others want to use. Just a thought.

  • @fisherofmen9897
    @fisherofmen9897 4 года назад

    When do you normally pull the nest box out after the doe has the litter? Also, do you take it completely out or do you just clean it out and replace bedding and place it on it's side?

    • @jenniferhart7049
      @jenniferhart7049 3 года назад +1

      Turn the box on its side at approx 14 days old or when they start to jump out. If it's cold, stuff fresh hay in the box. Replace the material if it gets wet or soiled.

    I recently had a Angora that candled. But her fur was really stringy and not very slow. One of the little kits was tangled up in the fur. So I cleaned out the nest and took some fur from another rabbit her kits was ready to come out of the nest. I didn’t know if she would accept the fur from another rabbit or not, but the momma rabbit did except the fur. Seem to appreciate what I did for her baby. So my thoughts is take the fur out that the bunnies are not using anymore and put them in a sandwich bag and save them.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  3 года назад

      They will get out when they are ready. You shouldn't have to intervene at all. Depending on the outside temperature they may uncover themselves from time to time but they will start venturing out of the nest box around 12 days old usually. They will still use the nest box for another week or so after that though. I hope that helps.

    my rabbit had her 1st clutch last night
    1. i gave her nesting box 5 days ago with straws stuffed in so she can re adjust them as per she needs but she didnt created anything instead she kept eating those straws
    2. she did not pull her fur at all
    3. she gave birth to them on the floor of the cage
    4. she ate them al...... yes ALL of them except for those dead bodies which i removed timely
    5. if she was stressed..... what for n how can i make it right for next time?
    6. i feed her carrots, cabages, alfalfa and required medicines mixed in water as per doctor's prescriptions but i can not understand all this behaviour....... can any one make it clear for me.... what could be the possible reason for that

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  3 года назад +1

      I am so sorry that you had to deal with that. First time moms just don't know what to do sometimes. It isn't uncommon for the first time mom to have her babies on the cage floor instead of in the nest box. If you can find them quick enough and move them to the nest box they usually do just fine. But they don't last long on cage floor. The most likely thing that happened is that they died from exposure and her eating them was an attempt to clean them up and not draw predators (it is a survival instinct). I would give her another chance and watch her very closely when she is due to make sure you can get the babies in the nest box if she has them again on the cage floor.

I got her some Alfalfa where I live I can't get the Alfalfa Timothy so it's either Coastal and Alfalfa or just straight Alfalfa I don't know if she got a bellyache from the Alfalfa but she was on the Alfalfa before but it's really she's eating the pellets and everything just not feeding her babies. Her belly is warm and her milk sack is full, my second litter was fine.

    Hlo, on 10th Feb 2021, when I went to see my new pair rabbits (which are almost 6 months of age now) I found male matting but doe was running away again and again since they were never been caged & were having every freedom. And somehow I helped male rabbit to crunch his thirst and doe got a single good fall off. Later on I kept them un-caged as before. But for almost 2 days I witnessed male rabbit is trying to get over doe but she didn't allow him and ran away and then I realised shez already pregnant, the result of which I got today when my doe rabbit started picking too much hay etc in her mouth to make nest.which means she will give birth within 3-4 days. Now I wonder that when I made her to get one good fall off on 10th Feb 2021 she was already pregnant by almost 15 days. Will she be double pregnant??? As I have heard this. Like some youtuber told that she might give birth again after 15 days from the date of her first litter.
