While I hate that Colin left for his tour, I think it was for the best. He left knowing Penelope loved him and I believe he has strong feelings in return. He left so she could grow up a little and he could put some time and distance between them. He knew that starting a relationship right after her father's passing wouldn't be right. Also, starting a relationship with Penelope right after breaking his engagement would cast Penelope into a negative light by the rest of the ton. There would be whispers that she caused Colin to break the engagement by some nefarious means; or that Penelope is just a consolation prize for Colin.

He's blind towards Pen. She helped him so now he wants to be her friend and help her too, which is beautiful but telling her that she's not a women, she's her friend and that doesn't count it's too much for our hearts and hers. He's really blind
These 2 are an extreme example but people ending up in love with people they never expected to be in love with is a common theme of Julia Quinns books that's what I like about them
