LAMOTHERMIC - Lost Wax Castings

- This video was shot in 1996 at the Lamothermic factory in Brewster New York. Produced by Paul M. Levine, the video depicts a process called "lost wax casting".
Cut to industrial music, the video portrays a bygone age of manufacturing in the United States. It also depicts the end of a time when these type of manufacturing jobs existed in our country.
This ageless process begins by making a part in wax, then assembling these parts on a "tree", that is then covered by layers of hard material that makes a mold. Once hardened, the wax is melted out of the mold and various types of molten metals, i.e. steel, copper, aluminum, etc. are now poured into the void that was left AFTER the wax was melted out.
Once the metal cools off, the piece is cut off the "tree" and the "flash" is removed. The part is then machined into a final finished product. This process is used even today in the making of car parts, golf clubs, guns, model train engines and any thing that requires metal to be molded into an object.
this music sounds like I just hit the technology upgrade button in Age of Empire 3
I worked there from 2007 until mid 2012 and we were still doing things pretty much the same way. We got some newer machines with computer controls and such, but the process is timeless. Doing a lot of these steps by hand produces high quality castings. They didn't show the automated wax injectors, but those are mostly for fairly simple shapes that we needed a lot of. For smaller batches and large or complex parts you can't beat an experienced wax press operator.
Hotter wax shrinks more. The wax we used was formulated specifically for the purpose and temps were between 130 - 160 F.
More liquid (higher temp) wax yields greater detail but in this process it was held under pressure as it cooled. In the traditional process one might carve the solid, cooled wax into the desired shape. Hope this helps. Good Luck
well its good to hear this is still in operation and not shipped off to china
You guys rock.
thanks
fascinating. Thanks :)
I worked there years ago, I'm the guy welding at the 7:46 minute mark. Who am I? Why, I'm the Anvil Man, the owners definitely remember me.
+alexandrabimini Oh yeah I totally recognize you.

Is the guy at 5:45 seriously holding the investment wth his hand whilst the metal is being poured ?!
Those gloves better be made of stone or something. Fucking hell.
+Cyril Berruyer Yeah, he found it was a lot easier than trying to hold onto my mixtape.
😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Cyril Berruyer back when men were men....and snowflakes hadnt formed yet
wOW, so good video. Not a one explanation about the steps in this process.
Hi, what material do you use for the refractory coating?
Hi I also want to know that,can I ?
5:30 This guy realy has a "hot job"..Working with hot metal myself, i know..no fun during the summertime.
wow, this in 1996, now lost wax is totally automated
+musicforalltome91 I wish...at my company we are still doing manual

Until recently i worked in a data manufacturing company .thanks to rona.(corona virus) i now habe a very intresting job where i work for a big company in the uk but it is a internation company.how fid i get to this video.i have a keen intrest in this sort of wax moulds. U see im a grinder polisher i take pride in my work. Its the first time ive worked for a company that prefare quality over quantity.ive been at my compamy 2 months and im keeping quality to 100% but getting faster everyday and doing more parts. Even thought this is 1996 its still facanating to watch apart from the music lol
5:34 So dangerous
5:30 LOL
this music sounds like it came from a cheesy 80's fantasy flick, probably starring miles o'keefe.
damn Bro has a Stussy shirt in 96...probably worth some money now in the Vintage market
Lol I used to work there

What the heck is going on here?
Today much of these things can be made by a CNC.
@@siliconvalleymetal Read what is written; I said "much of these things" that is not the same as all, right? Right.
@@siliconvalleymetal I have only said that it CAN be made by CNC today not that everything must, ok?
@@siliconvalleymetal And that come from the one who initiated this highly useless discussion, yea. lol.
I see a lot of inefficiency and some absolutely idiotic casting procedures.
