He did actually say "by the time Im playing next year" and I thought that was telling.
I really liked what he said. Sounded very mature for his age. Smart kid.
If Darnold signs here, Minnesota isn't winning more than seven or eight games.
Opportunity cost is way too high for a Money Ball guy like Kwesi. Just don't see it happening...thank god.
VIkings org needs to keep a poker face about QB starter to tag-n-trade Darnold
Exactly
Not worth the risk, let him go !!!
Good point..... couldn't agree more....
If the Vikings sign Darnold to a long term extension over their #10 QB, they are repeating history with Kirk Cousins. Fools.
They literally can't say a word about Darnold not coming back until past the start of free agency. In his own truth moment I think KOC knows Darnold isn't coming back.
Do not keep Darnold. Tag and trade or just let him walk. JJ with Daniel Jones as backup.
Let him walk, tag is not worth the risk
1% chance Darnold is a Viking next season.
Nah. I’d put it around 7.3%.
He better not be. Honestly I think this is a poker play to try and get something for Darnold.
Sorry, T Swift is mid and I hate both teams. I'll be playing games online with my non football friends. ✌🏻
Yeah, who wants to watch the two best teams in the NFL play for the championship when you could do the same old thing you do every night instead.
Real football guy I see 😂
What do I want: 100% go with McCarthy as undisputed starter and try to build this team into True Contenders...... What do I think the odds are Darnold returns: 50/50 .....Based on reports, and my knowledge of how the Wilf's value "being competitive", I would NEVER put it past them to overpay a mediocre QB.....
I believe the Vikings front office is just playing this out to get the most value for Sam. Their plan last year worked out better than anticipated and gained the Wilf’s trust to stick with the plan. Sam will be traded early so they can add a pick in the draft. They probably feel like they will be fine remolding and starting with DJ. JJM will be ready if DJ struggles or JJM does so well in practice they can’t keep him on the bench.
You said it best!
JJ is the long term franchise QB, he is young and I am a fan of developing him for as long as it takes for him to be absolutely healthy and confident before starting.
If the Wilfs get involved and force Kwesi and KOC to keep Darnold that's about the worst case scenario I can imagine. He did play at a high level at times, no doubt but I have conviction in JJ. Be smart as well, these one year wonder veteran QB things come and go all the time with the Vikings. Let it go IMO. You spend 40 mill on Darnold pretty much neutering your Free Agency potential. It's a bad idea and would really make it tough rooting for this team moving forward.
Imo I totally I agree we need the cap for free agents
It’s all smoke and mirrors. JJ will start.
Great podcast you guys are awesome as always
Is JJ just trying to help Sam out by getting him a better offer?
Sam is a top 10 QB. He's now a pro bowler. But he's only a top 10 qb Until you're oline can't block for him.
He was NOT a top 10 before this last season, and he was not a top 10 QB in his last 2 games.
I feel like we need to completely disregard any possibility of the transition tag. There are seemingly zero benefits to the Vikings to do it. You put out the transition tag and you just accept that he walks and you get zero compensation for it. Not even the possibility of a stupid comp pick.
This is why there was a poison pill with Hutchinson. The Vikings would have $35 million of their free agency money locked up for the first week of free agency until that 1-week match window is open. Seattle fully expected some other team to negotiate a contract with Hutchinson for them... and they would simply match it.
@@joshuabunkers1494 thank you for this comment, it made me read into what a "poison pill" was. Very interesting stuff
You can do the non exclusive franchise tag ($41 mill), and then negotiate with the team who wants the player to take less than 2 1st round picks for a trade. The team with the player has that power. So that's almost certainly the way they go -
I disagree. The player has all the leverage in the non-exclusive franchise tag. The team that has the player gets a salary cap penalty ($41 million) until the trade happens (which could be a week or two after free agency starts). For the trade to happen:
1) The targeted team to trade the player to has to agree to the trade compensation with the trading team.
2) The targeted team will have to work out a new contract with the player being traded.
3) The traded player has to agree to the new contract and if it is not as much as he dreamed of getting in free agency, he can nix the whole thing by sitting on the decision until July, when he has the deadline to sign his franchise tag tender is due.
Can you imagine, if these front office keeps Darnold, and trades JJ, and JJ becomes the next great QB?
I just cant stand Mr Swifty anymore, he's taken conceded to a whole new level.
Stop hating dude don't be mad that he knows how to win super bowls and your trash has Vikings hasn't even sniffd one in the last 60 years and up until this past offseason never had a franchise quarterback Vikings finishing never be talking s*** about the Chiefs again! U guys have right! you're franchise has been completely dysfunctional in terms of actually competing for super bowls in the last 60 years
@JustusBuckles blow me... Reid is the only one who I have any respect for. Kelce & Mahomes are jerkoffs!
Great content, excellent job as always.
Too bad we can't fire the owners if they INSIST on Darnold.
"It's not about the dollars...it's about what the dollars represent" that is an OG gangster pimp type line tho 😂😂
Running is back with Sam has to be the most Vikings thing the owners can do smh
I think Sam has all the leverage. He gets to walk into free agency. Or he can sit on that franchise tag, not sign it until July and basically tie up the Vikings' hands in free agency.
It does not behoove the Vikings as an organization to tank whatever value they might discover on Darnold in a tag and trade scenario by telling McCarthy now that no matter what he is the starter now. So either they coached him up on what to say bc McCarthy has to recognize they need the picks too or they are controlling the messaging in the market as best they can at this point before the NFL season is even over by not telling McCarthy what they are planning. Let’s use common sense.
Why is it that Darrisaw tore his ACL and MCL a little less than halfway through the season, but he’ll be ready for week 1. Yet, JJM who tore his meniscus after the first PRESEASON game, won’t be ready for week 1? Bye Darnold
Why in the world would you trade greenard for unproven draft picks? You need to let Darnold walk to build this team through FA. If we signed Darnold he eats up our cap the same way cousins did and here we are in the same boat. I’m out on that idea and I hope Kwesi is smarter than that
I can almost guarantee KOC talked to Wilf's about this situation during his contract negotiations. And the WIlf's have never been very hands on owners. My opinion.
70% McCarthy is competing with someone other than Darnold for starting role.
Sirles, 3rd (or second) round comp pick when he signs with someone else isn't "nothing"
65%-35% JJ #9
4 Picks is not enough - But remember unlike most teams in NFL Kwese is a Jedi. That means Kwese is great at identifying great fit free agents for the Vikings offense and defense needs. Kwese has 50 Mill in his pocket and has Obi Wan powers with getting "UFDAs " Great potential in you, there is. The Force is strong in these undrafted ones... So I think we should pick at 24 or small trade back. Elite players live in the First Round. Vikings need to get an impact player in the first round and live high on that rookie scale contract for 4 years. SKOL
You're missing the mark a little bit. The person with a higher pay grade than KOC, who may be calling the shots, is a dude with an ugly grill from the Bayou
Kirk with that defense would of won 14 games
It was the defense
Quarterbacks get to much credit it's a team game
Darnold, Addison and a 2nd.
Sam is a FOOL if he doesn't go to FA and get his BAG!
What if JJ will be injured again. Hopefully this time the Possible injury will not happen at the end of the preseason again?
I read the "above KOC's pay grade" comment as a reference to God. JJM and KOC are both big on faith and I think that's what he was referring to. So, maybe more of a reference to however things play out with his injury recovery and whatever else happens that is out of anyone's hands.
If darnolds back I'm not keeping my tickets
Now we can only trade Darnold to a "pathetic qb franchise"? Teams should be lining up for a top 10 qb, shouldn't they?
I think a decision hasn't been made yet and they are waiting to play it out. I agree guys!
He came in for 1 year bridge
90.10 just is quarterback
Why they Avon draft him that was the plan Mccarthy would of won 14 games to easy schedule
Daniel Jones will start, start hot, they will trade him and then JJ will take over.
I think they should put the word out in the NFL regarding Donald and JJ McCarthy and tell the entire NFL consider them back in the draft both of them are better than any quarterback in the draft they should be able to get 2 1st round picks for each of them and they shouldn't I let McCarthy go for one player or 1 pick because they traded app to get the guy and who in the hills trades app 1/5 to get a guy I'm being you changed from 12 to 11 who's gonna take him if you wait that was the dumbest trade I've ever heard of and if they let Donald go just walk out the door that will be equal to Mike Lynn trained for Herschel Walker
I think they should trade Johnson Jefferson too which I thought last year before they gave more of that money these were 2 1st round Fix At the price of payment we're gonna have to dump in sooner or later because he's gonna not be worth what we're paying them eventually they're already guys creeping up on him and II really think we can do just as well without him
Sam is not on this team for the 2025 season.
These guys are stupid the defense won 9 of them games he ain't better than Mccarthy they had and easier schedule then next year's darnold wouldn't see 11 wins next year harder schedule
He's not worth 20
Let him go he's not any good
This shouldn't Avon be a conversation darnold sucks against good team he sucks
I used to hate Barry Sanders, and then after a few years I realized that I just needed to appreciate the greatness. Even though I’m pretty sure he ran for 200 yards every time the Lions played the Vikings.
Ah trade McCarty and he will be the next Brady curse of the vikings and the other team will win the superbowl same school as brady
It wasn't a real cause know you think he's coming back stupid he hangs on to the ball to long he missed 3 touchdowns in both of them games he sucke he don't change the play
Its going to be jj you goofus
