- Опубликовано: 12 июл 2023
- When the Trek Fuel EXe was launched, it made waves in the EMTB world thanks to its geometry, design, and the TQ motor housed within it. New for 2024, Trek has released a more affordable option - the Fuel EXe Alloy. With it being half the price of its carbon fibre counterpart, is it half the bike? Steve Jones set out to find out...

Finally, more alloy E-bikes.
Yep. For dual suspension mountain bikes I prefer less expensive, stiff aluminum alloy frames over carbon fiber
@@coastalhillbilly3419 Agree :)
I bought a 2023 Fuel Exe 9.7 carbon. I'm 60 and it makes me ride like a 22yr old. Lightweight and aggressive on the downhill. 600 miles and I just picked up the extended battery pack that has been on order since Dec 2022. I'm riding even further and climbing like a goat!
What’s the range? As 30 min for 30% battery doesn’t sounds amazing…
Age 68 , Rebuild one Exe 9.5 lyrik ultimate 160 front - rear 205x65 , Sram stealth brake 220mm / 200rear disc HS2 , Carbon wheels , 19kg ready 2Race !!! Is a Beast
Hi mate - good points. I am in Aus waiting for extenders to arrive here. Are they worth the wait? Be good to hear your point of view...Haggis
@@haggishaggerty9328 With Extender I can make it to 1900hm , I have the 9.5 - 3000km at 4 months and very satisfied . The pedal response is very low - eco . 78W / Assit 53%🙂
Hey Steve, how about you put say, 5000 km on that TQ DU and report back. Thanks!
I just pulled the trigger on my 9.7 exe. Wish I had this to choose from. Still happy with my buy 👏🏾
👍A flying machine that over 25km/h has no resistance at all, that's how every SL Emtb feels in comparison to a non SL Emtb and the bike you build yourself at a good price today with top spec full carbon, with full XTR, Roval carbon wheels and with a 170mm Fox Factory 36 fork, which is last year's 35Nm Specialized SL frame at half the price with range extender and y-cable included.
This is the lightest and most fun bike that gives me the most training uphill and downhill because of this weight and 170mm front suspension travel which gives me the right geometry on the deal.
I also have 170mm Öhlin air and coil forks on my two other not quite as light 150mm suspension bikes, which makes these what I think are the "best all-round bikes"😋.
I understand and now accept why a lighter bike has such an outrageously higher price/less weight and that's why I spend far too much money on these Emtbs that give me so much joy I could never get from any other form of exercise in my 58 years😊
5:50 yeah but you compare the top end carbon to mid alloy version. Think would be fair if you compared your alloy XT to the 9.8XT 😉
Exactly, stupidity of the authors is limitless
I ride it a lot with motor off. Feels great !
At my age 71 this sounds like an ideal bike to get me back on the trail .
No one piece bar stem combo makes this a winner for me
And no headset routing 😂
The creaking though, apparently exactly like the orbea rise alu 5:10
It's not really half the price. If you compare the carbon XT vs. the alloy XT bike, the price difference is about $2100. Besides the carbon frame, the carbon 9.8XT also comes with carbon wheels, carbon cranks, and the expensive carbon bar/stem combo. It also has a higher spec suspension. When you consider all of this, the alloy bike doesn't look like as much of a bargain.
It's cheaper and for some that is all they can afford. Still not exactly cheap tho.
@@philiphawkins4684 And? It's still not half the price or a bargain.
I just checked because i also couldnt believe there's the max specs on this one. and then I see the Fox Rythm fork on the most expensive version of the alloy one. why? i dont get it.
its not even close when you compare the performance of the 15k carbon vs the 7.5k alloy.
They've also upped the prices so the 5 is the same price as the 9.5, and the 9.5 is now more expensive with dogshit spec. No wonder nobody is buying them.
Thanks from NZ , just had my normal / non E robbed so am thinking in my mid 50’s mabey go E. Great professional job thanks again.
I don't think this such a bargain as you think it is. you can pick up a carbon 9.5 for around 6 grand, and kit it out over the time to your heart's content.
I hope they put abit more paint on the thing cos mine chips away when you stare at it too long.
I hope they sorted the bottom linkage for the rear shock.
After having ridden my 9.7 for near to 3,000 km im happy to say it is definitely the best bike i've ever had. you're not going to keep up with full power ebikes, even if you carry a spare battery around.
Happy to see the alloy version around, many positives about an aluminium frame for sure.
Ive found it for £4850 now
waiting for the Trek Slash-E!
Or E-Slash . but yes same here.
Rail??? Not isn't?!
@@brunoryker5646 rail is their FULL POWERED ebike..
Like your idea of just getting a spare main battery instead of the range extender easy and quick to change out on the Exe 😁👍
Nice! I like where the segment is going!
👍I guess that it is not only from carbon to Aluminum that makes this big price difference, I guess that it is also about the type of spec such as XTR to SLX etc. It is wise to be able to easily remove the light battery on an SL bike and have, as you Smith points out, an extra battery in the backpack instead of a range extender in case you want to take a longer ride, which means that the bottle holder comes to its proper use😉
How do you compare the TQ motor resistance without with a Brose without battery? Wondering to buy a mid range and the Trek looks good
How long, time wise, can you ride in the different modes on that battery?
Would you go for alloy one or for the fuel Exe 9.5 that dropped a lot in price and is now hardly more expensive (+500) but you get carbon instead of alloy. thx!
The „lower“ carbon spec 9.5 was and is still under 7000 (thats still a heap though). The 13000 model was only the top-spec build all reviewers got shipped.
Shhh. Don't ruin Jones' spiel ! This is not the place for factual details 🤣
Is the aluminum version UDH compatible?
That TQ seems louder. There was a distinct intermittent gear sound.
How's it measure up to the Specialized?
So WHEN is it due to land ? Can it be mulleted ?
Great to see reviews of alloy bikes, so often the ones sent to be reviewed are top spec carbon but you really can't beat a well spec'd alloy for value, look at the rail 9 for example. In nz it is on sale for around 9k which is around 4k kess than an equivalent spec levo.
"you really can't beat a well spec'd alloy for value"
Except Trek have just increased the prices of the carbon ones so the alloys are the same price as last year's carbons. Don't fall for their marketing.
Top end AL bike seems like the best deal. $7400. Electronic shifting. Most other parts are perfectly fine (but maybe some room for upgrades). I'd rather have this and upgrade to some carbon wheels and bars, than the carbon bike.
When I left analogue cycling to go electric I noticed the weight difference but relished the advantages more than I lamented the weight gain. Similarly I like the low cadence support of a high torque motor so offering me less weight at the cost of wearing myself out frantically pedaling is not an attractive preposition.
Ive got one of the expensive exe’s, great for the climbs but prob its best point is it allows me to take just about any route and keep my hr in zone 2. Much prefer my leg powered bike for oushin the limits
Excellent advice
7:37 so you think this harmonic pin ring is indestructible? There are already cases of this new tq motor failures on emtb forum..
Nice bike, good price point but maybe it's personal, why an entry level Fox Rhythm for a bike at this price point?
I would have like a comparison with the bottom range carbon as Sigma had that for sale at 5.6k. I pulled the trigger but alloy with XT is tempting.
Lol did you honestly spend £5.6K on the 9.5??? That's MORE than rrp 🤣 I'm assuming you don't mean the bottom range carbon.
Can you make some a video on the trek rail 9-9,7 2023? 😇
my e-dream bike was the Orbea Rise........but, this look has got me reconsidering my first e-mtb snag. I feel like we're just entering into a new phase of e-mtbs.
This bike has really got me thinking
I was the same way about the Orbea but I bought the fuelexe.
The trek rode just as well to me and the motor is so stealth as far as size and sound.
What finally put me over the edge for the Fuel was the bike shops I'd be dealing with locally.
I have no regrets with my decision.
Rise is more XC as well I think. I went trek for the slacker geometry…
@@gavinsullivan9015 that's a consideration I'd also lean towards too......I did overwhelm the Rise's stock marzocchi z2 (not a fan of that fork at all)
@@thezonemtb lots of Trek dealers round here too.....thanks for the info!
Love my Orbea Rise M10, but I wish it had beefier suspension but I am upping the front Fox 36 to 160 which will help geo (slacker) and downhills. Where the motor is a little noisy it's very very good - 60nm and a stack of mileage especially with the alloy H15 with it's 540 battery. I've got the standard 360wh battery and don't have any range issues but do have the 270wh range extender which gives huge mileage.
Tough to beat a 2022 Orbea M10 with full XT, Fox 36 etc for £5.5k
TQ motor? I haven't trusted them since the Haibike Flyon - the award winner of 2019 failed and was never heard from again. Can TQ make a motor that lasts?
My wife and I have the 9.5 and 9.7 carbon models and we LOVE them. Very natural feeling with enough support to offset my overweight, middle-aged body. It makes me feel 25 years younger and 50 lbs lighter.
I recently demoed a carbon Levo SL and the Fuel EXe is a little heavier, firmer/stronger, provides more power, is quieter, and feels more natural. The Levo feels more like a lightweight XC bike whereas the Fuel EXe almost feels like low travel enduro. The Fuel EXe is a much better bike IMO.
I have both and found the opposite.
The levo sl is a lot more capable compared to the Exe. Motor on Exe is stealthyer but sl maybe punchier.
Range is just as good on the sl with the slightly smaller battery.
How do you find the noise on the sl though? Currently weighing up a carbon sl at £3500 vs a Exe 9.5 at £4395
@@mikestephenson4941 My wife and I felt the SL was louder, not as refined as than the EXe, and the power difference was very noticeable. The SL was still a nice bike but I felt it leaned towards a lightweight XC bike and was best suited for lighter rides. The EXe is a slightly heavier trail bike that covers a wide range of uses and is much better suited for heavier riders. It's fine as an XC bike but a much better trail bike that could do some light Enduro work. IMO
I just bought the 9.5 in the sale, I had to change the fork because the 35 eMTB fork is garbage and there are several components which are obviously cheap. Eg the brake levers. Now with a fox 36 it’s all the bike I’ll ever need. But I would have happily got this alloy version with full xt if it was the same money. Super efficient bike as well. The TQ isn’t faultless by the way - known rattle at low torque applications which is pretty annoying… helluva a bike though.
I bought the one piece carbon stem bar as a retrofit. Too lovely not to!
Interested to a light ebike
I am wondering, why is it impossible to charge while riding e-bike especially sl ones. My biggest downside for embt is you don't get as much workout on daily basis you should from mountain biking to keep you fit and that extra weight that making riding dumb. By using charge mode you can level up easy part and enjoy assistance where it needed and keep weight down, having a whole day of riding to a pleasant trip.
Is it me or can I hear creaking coming from the ebike when it's ridden?
I’ll tune back when reviews are not ads
Love my EXE 9.7 carbon...TQ motor is so smooth and natural (i also have 2 full powered bosch emtbs)
I’m about to pull the trigger on buying a EXE as im not ready for a full fat emtb, are they that much different, full fat vs half fat?, thanks for your time.n
@@davefreeman9347 there is a definite difference between the 2. As long as you just need minimal assistance and aren't riding with full powered emtbs, you'll be fine with a mid-power
I was going to get the EXE last year but I ride with people with full power bikes. I bought a Liv Intrigue Elite 2 (womans M, reach is between mens S and mens M), which allows me to ride full power or low power as desired. That said, there's definitely a lot more battery management required because of the smaller batteries (if riding the standard 400Wh). Regarding the system weight being so much less than normal bikes, the battery is half the size... The Liv is 21.6kg (with a Fox Float X2 and a few other mods) and around 23kg with the range extender (600Wh all up)
Great video. Thanks for producing guys. Battery is a tiny bit too small for me. But an amazing bike on offer! Certainly looks better than my 2020 Levo SL
I have a "20 YT with Shimano 8000 and I am in tune with it. Recently, I rode the Trek with Bosch and the Trek with TQ at the local bike shop. Hated the Bosch and loved the TQ.
Glad I'm working in a shop... The prices the big brands are offering for their top product lines are insane!! I could not even afford them with the shop prices. The cycling industry sold it's soul in the last 10 years. Too bad really
The entry level carbon Trek Fuel exe 9.5 can be found for under £5K now which I think is a massive bargain
Nearly £4K and still struggling to sell because the spec is so crap.
Not really an apple to apple compaison. The 9.7 version is about $ 2k more than alloy.
Regardless, i really like my fuel exe.
Mountain bikes are the same prices as motorcycles which is ludicrous.
Scale of economics I’m afraid , but there has been a marked decrease in prices lately and lots of discounts about on fairly new stuff
I love my canyon bike 🚲
I do not know - I bought an e-bike so I can get uphill, on flat or downhill, I do not use the help of the motor at all...
All reviewers of these bikes say let’s listen to the quietness of the motor and then they keep talking 😂
spikes ?
@@brentcollins9727 Voice to text. 🤦♂️😆
For those who can afford it this bike laughs in the face of public land managers trying to enforce ebike bans.
You sounded Like Guy Kesteven then, for a moment, "proper proper"
Well since my last comment I've bought the 9.5 carbon for £4895, my first e-bike and I've got to say its the best bike I've had hands down, its so addictive, and I cant believe how quiet it is compared to my mates other e-bikes. It handles so well its like a steam roller but also agile and easy to move around, its given me a new lease of life to get out when i can and enjoy the sport more and thats what its all about, getting out on the trails and enjoying, if anyone is thinking of getting one just get it.
Great price, where was that from?
Why would an alloy bike be half the performance?
India price?
I think the power delivery is not very good compared to specialized SL.
I'd rather have a AL frame with carbon bars and wheels than the other way around. Ideally all carbon, but that gets pricey.
At 55, I consider this bike my pick but my soul tells me to avoid tech as it will be ever changing/evolving and non assisted will always be the measure. Still not off my list.
Trek, finally recognised there wasn't as much gullible humans willing to pay over 10 k for their bikes as they thought 😜
Lol the carbon exe is struggling to sell right now even with massive discounts because the price is too high and the spec is too crap. Bringing an alloy one into the mix isn't going to help.
Seems overpriced considering it's roughly the same price as the new Levo SL Comp, which is full carbon frame
Im still waiting for the self charging ebike... Won't fall for these hype...
Less is more !!!
Very true have less is more work you’re doing.
15k.... INSANE - Thats even more then a brand new car! - A realistic price that people could pay would be 5k - Not all of us are americans earning 100-150k a year. Prices in premium bike segment are just out of hand.
In EU, a average monthly salary is 800-2000€ after taxes, making up to a YEARLY income of 10k - 24k
Close to none in EU will buy a bike worth almost their whole years salary.
I will never buy a ready to ride bike aggain. Buy a frame and built the bike yourself. Way cheaper. Stock bikes usually have shit rims, tires, stem, handlebar, grips, saddle & pedals. And yet they pretend that the bike is worth 10-15k LOL
Like display and shifter
Need 2 batteries
Price needs to be around 3000 us $
Ça fait vraiment dégueu les câbles non intégrés..??🫣🤔😱😩
Mountain biking is one big massive rip-off.
Ebikes have just got ridiculously expensive. The manufacturers are profiteering at the expense of buyers!
what gives? it's not half the price though, it's basically the same price, e.g Carbon Fuel EXe 9.5 $9,999.99 AUD v ALU Fuel EXe 5 $8, 99.99 AUD. stuff like this will earn you an unsub.
The 9.5 can be had for 8k AUD, at least that’s what I paid…
Still stupidly expensive
Still too much money
Can EMBN not afford a decent action cam for pov shots? Or spent all the money on overpriced bikes?
anything from Trek these days is subpar and overpriced. Ebikes in general are made for old fat farts.
You guys with your stupid model year designation. I thought there was a successor for next year. Thereby only the Alloy, which was already 2023 on the market. It is a 2023 bike. The year it came out. Not 2024...
Owned a pivot sl for awhile and terrible suspension tune . Motor mounts creaked right out the gate . Gen 3 Levo has been way better to own . Maybe I should’ve got the pivot LT instead . All I can say is Demo them all and take your time . Buy the less spec cheaper bike and upgrade parts as you go .
I would spend the extra couple of K and actually have the better parts. Much better deal than the cheaper version.
