  • Book review of Marilynne Robinson's first novel Housekeeping. This book was published in 1980 and concerns the inherited sense of loss across three generations of a predominantly female family. Robinson went on to publish other well-received novels in the 2000's and beyond -- Gilead, Home, and Lila.

Thank you for this review! I really enjoyed it. Your description of the prose was magical, if a little odd, but I suppose so was the prose itself so that makes sense. I'm sorry you had a bad time with Gilead though. You might enjoy her third novel, Home. That is my favourite. I love your videos! Keep it up.

I really loved Housekeeping when I read it several years ago. I need to reread it. I, too, found Gilead boring. Beautifully written and I did finish it, but didn't continue on with the other books.

Housekeeping sits really well in memory. Maybe in the top 10 for me. That Sylvie character was so well done. If I recall, it was a long time between Housekeeping and Gilead. I think people were really happy she came back. It's interesting that one of her early teachers and supporters was John Hawkes at Brown, a favorite writer of mine, though her style was so different from the writing coming out of that school

About 50 pages in, I almost quit, found it pretty dull and syrupy. But came across your review, which motivated me to finish. Glad I did. Still didnt connect with it much, but did remind me of a favorite from Denis Johnson, Train Dreams, similar setting and tone in some places, though completely different arc. Anyways, thanks for your thoughtful review.

thanks for your comment! i recall reading Train Dreams when it came out, seemed a departure for Johnson at the time, need to catch up on his later work

@@PaperBird i enjoyed his last story collection, Largesse of the Sea Maiden, but so far Train Dreams is my favorite of his novels. Might try fiskadoro next.
