As a family car, i think safety is the utmost priority. Bringing your entire family on a trip, the 6 airbags surrounding the Avanza is quite comforting.

Personally, I choose the Xpander. I did my research and comparos to other mpv brands because I’m planning to get one but as a consumer, I feel more the Xpander has it all! The look, comfort, suspension, ground clearance, fuel economy, features and convenience especially the cruise control which other brands don’t have. 😊

I agree. Idk how they were able to come up with the choice of putting avanza above the xpander. The only edge of the avanza is the price. CargoSpace is similar. They just dont know how to maximize. Or maybe this is a paid comparo so who knows.

Getting xpander gls AT 2023 next week. We did our research and we happily chose Xpander gls 2023 over the other MPVs.
    1. The looks looks like a mid sized suv montero sport(its like its big bro) esp if you get the aero body kit it will look really badass,
2.ground clearance as its very important for thr long rides(humps and rough roads) and since were prone to floods, xpander fit right in for that..
3.Cruise control is an amazing addition to it. Which most of the time its only availble to SUVs.
    5. Bigger than most MPVs.
    6. Last but not the least - AUTOHOLD/AUTO PARK feature.
    7. Affordability.
The only cons I seem to notice with xpander is its power when going steep uphill. I have watched some folks have problem with this. But I gotta give this a try soon as we get the unit next week.
look wise, avanza looks like a sedan than an mpv. Its short on ground clearance too, not good for rough roads esp if you’re loaded. Engine is a bit noisy too. But then again, it boils down to personal taste/preferrence.

I would choose avanza because of long term issues. Almost all my mitsubishi vehicles from galant to lancer to adventure after 3 years would have issues on wiggles at 100kph and door issues especially the locking system and power windows. These i have never experienced with my revo to vios to innova. Even after the 7th year no issues on wigggle and door issues.
But in terms of the engine both are very good ones in long term. Both have very afffordable maintenance. But in terms of after sales service, hands down to toyota. Had bad experiences with mitsubishi service centers.

We have both the Avanza and Xpander Cross 2023. With Philippine road conditions, I always encounter the Avanza scratching the road during bumps and from flat to inclines or vice versa. Xpander is more practical in this area especially for a fact that I do not wish to get scuffs on a car we paid so much for. I saw someone in the comments mention about Mitsubishi vehices having problems after years regarding vibrations. In truth, all vehicles by age experience that, but on my part, as someone who experienced driving Mitsubishi cars like Lancers, Monteros, L300s and now the Xpander, I never experienced problems like that. Maybe it depends with how the vehicle is cared for. Though I feel like the the grill of Avanza is too "plasticy" compared to the Xpander, the experience of driving both Avanza and Xpander are are indeed great for me. I just find Xpander more macho and the Avanza more classic.

    • @noski33

Mas pogi talaga Xpander 🤣. If only it had the safety features of the Avanza. But also not getting the Avanza, that very low front bumper is a red flag. Maybe other Toyota models (Veloz, Rush).
You are right with the other points you mentioned. All cars after years would naturally have some wear & tears.

What kind of review is this? It starts with a “survey” of the looks and that’s it. No mention of the basic features like cruise control and automatic parking brake which are quite obvious that one car has and the other doesn’t just by looking at the interiors of both cars. Even the parameters for measuring interior space and engine capacity are different.
As far as features and design are concerned I think the Xpander is comparable to the Veloz and not the Avanza. But maybe Toyota’s marketing team just wants to downgrade the Xpander to the level of the Avanza.

As a former car mechanic, I'd take the Xpander because it has a traditional torque converter automatic instead of the CVT that Toyota is shoving down our throats. The CVT is gonna break more often even if you service it regularly. The torque converter automatic will still need servicing but will never break unless you drive it like an F1 car or abuse it. Toyota was my favorite brand until they started rolling out CVT's. CVT's are the best for fuel economy but the worst for longevity.

We own a 1st Gen Xpander and I love it so much but for the new generations Xpander and Avanza, I will go for the latter. Coz it is really such a big leap from the older Avanzas! The changes are noticeable from the interior to the exterior. Also, the Avanza is very spacious. I have seen one in person and I fell in love with it. The older generations of Avanza though would not be able to keep up with our 1st Gen Xpander.

  • @eyyydoddska

Welp, in terms of interior space, I do feel that the Xpander wins. The Xpander's interior is slightly wider than the Avanza, but impressively there is way more headroom in the Xpander than in the Avanza. And add to it the larger windows of the Xpander than those in the Avanza, you can indeed feel the roominess of the Xpander; I felt that the Avanza felt somehow claustrophobic. Interior quality is way more pronounced in the Xpander; the Avanza feels somehow cheap.
And as for the seating on the third row, yes, both cars can feel cramped when the third row seats are set upright and the second row seats slided all the way back-however both cars have tricks up their sleeves: the backrest of the third row seats should be reclined by pulling the drawstring then the backrests themselves, then let the second row seats slide a bit forward-at least 5 cm (2 inches) should be sufficient.
As for the riding feel, the Avanza wins… although ever so slightly, for it may be attributed to the lower ride height compared to the Xpander, which rides 20 mm higher than the Avanza. So indeed it may be somehow more family-friendly in a way that little kids and grandparents may find it easy to get in and out of the Avanza. The CVT also helps contribute to the smooth operation of the Avanza as there are no physical gears present, unlike the traditional 4-speed auto on the Xpander which, especially when downshifting to accelerate quicker, can cause the car to jerk. But yeah, if you regularly travel through unpaved rough roads with quite large puddles and uneven surfaces, the Xpander definitely feels more confident in this criterion.
Anyhow, I and my family are more than excited to seat our arses on the all-new 2023 Xpander GLS. A significant upgrade from our trusty, rugged Adventure which has served us for 13 years-more than half of my entire life.

Looks I can say Avanza is better looking but close. Tech I'll go with Xpander cause it has cruise control but pretty much the same for me over all. Value for money I'm leaning towards Avanza, cause with a family of 5 it's a bit spacious and that 100K difference is too much so I'd rather go with the Avanza. Since the Mitsubishi has been a part of Nissan - Renault group they have good production of cars and less defects. My father has a Lancer before and with the cyclone engine it's really a monster on the road and we have a Toyota Hi-Ace Van and Wigo also. I can say that aftermarket Toyota is still the easiest to find parts, which means you will have no problem on getting parts and lesser expense also. I don't know with the new Mitsubishi cars if they have aftermarket parts which is somehow with quality like Toyota parts does. I'll wait for KIa Carens to be launched here cause I researched about it and it's really two times a notch with these two but I'll consider the price or still the value for money. Nice comparo Top Gear! I'll wait for your review of the Kia Carens once it's out!

One big con that was not considered for the Avanza G variant in particular: Toyota doesn't want you to have one. We were looking at the Avanza G and we were not willing to downgrade to an Avanza E to get the car early. Our agent told us the Avanza G that was on the lot was already allocated to a buyer who waited 6 MONTHS for the car from the launch in March. It seems that TMP is deliberately constricting supply of the Avanza G to bump buyers to a Veloz (which happened to us, we got a Veloz V instead). This alone would be a major factor for people to swing towards the Xpander since Mitsubishi actually sells the top spec GLS to customers. It is disappointing that Toyota hands out the G variant of the Avanza to the media only for them not to allocate customers units to spend more. Agree with the verdict but I wished this issue of allocation was tackled in the end.

Hi TopGear, I'm just at the middle part of the vid but I already want to comment on interior space. The 3rd row as much as it is at par with most competitors, it seems that Drei didn't adjust the seatbacks to be reclined fully back. From a fold position, it doesn't really go all the way back once you pull it out, you have to pull the string located at the top outer portion to do so. I'm 5'8 and I can sit with decent amount of legroom for both 2nd and 3rd row once the former is slided just a bit forward.
And no sofa mode gimmick on the Xpander, it only has a full-flat folding 2nd and 3rd row unlike the Avanza(and Veloz) that still has a bit of a bump on its 2nd row seats once folded. The thing with the Xpander is despite having a more flat cargo space, it kinda is ever so slightly inclined but not something I'd call bothersome. Observed this pretty well at the last 8th PIMS, it was a good thing there were test units of the Veloz and Xpander that time.
Edit: just finished the comparo and no brainer result given the price difference and the limited time spent. It is also true the Xpander has hefty discounts, it can't match the Avanza G's price the last time I checked but it's close. In that regard, I'd rather have the Xpander with the extra versatility it offers for just a little more bucks, given you're a cash or bank P.O buyer.
As for the review, fairly detailed and thorough especially knowing how the Anton Andres does his reviews. Pretty keen on almost every bit of these vehicles. Now, I said a bit since it was somehow obvious that the time spent here was quite limited to conduct a more thorough comparo. If you've had more of it, you guys would easily point out how the presence of a cruise control is a welcome sight for those who take out of town trips with the fam or barkada, just to mention one of which I noticed that lacked here. Nevertheless a great review overall and looking forward for a more comprehensive one with the Veloz once its newer competitors arrive quite soon.

My Choice is Avanza's new generation variant G 1.5, I am planning to upgrade to the top-of-line of Avanza's variant G soon, why? I traveled to Baguio, Cagayan, Isabela, Bataan, and Nueva Ecija with my family in 2018 the first time we bought our 3rd Gen. Avanza variant E for a test drive and we have no problem happened whatsoever on the road. for me, Avanza is a fuel-efficient vehicle with affordable prices in the Philippines.

As a tester. Are you not worried that most tested cars have only 2 airbags like cars in the 1980’s in Europe? There is the Toyota Rush with 6 airbags and…? Right. Nothing. My 20 year old Mercedes E240 has 2 front, 2 side airbags in the front seats and on both sides so called curtains air bags protecting all passengers by a side impact. - I have to research if the brands who not offer 2 airbags in Asia & Latin America have 6 airbags standard in Europe. Btw. I’m from Germany, living now in Panama. Suzuki is a no go with 2 airbags. Honda, Toyota, Changan etc. only if they have more than 2 airbags.

We own a 2016 Avanza G and a 2022 Xpander Black Series, both are good cars to use. But I prefer to drive our Xpander. I value the comfort of passengers kasi and when compared, Avanza is way bumpy on rough roads. For fuel economy, based on experience, our Xpander is better din. What's good lang I believe with our Avanza is the good customer service from Toyota. A+ saamin ang good service.

Very pleased with comfort, features (Electric Brakes, Auto Hold Brake, Cruise Control and Android Head Unit, Multi wiper speeds). I think Expander is better than Veloz. The only minus is the exhaust pipe connection is rather weak, the bolts is getting loose after 2K KM, the service center told me this is commom occurence because the manufacturer didn't use washers. Oh I live in mountainous area, Engine brake on Expander is non existent, mostly need to use brake all the time during descend

Medyo mixxed up yung ideas ng mga gumawa ng comparo, I noticed, sabi ginawa ang comparo to determine "which of the two is the supreme people hauler"
Pero sa dulo nman ng video iba na ung naging criteria nila for choosing the avanza, - "which is the better family car" na.
Imagine if fully loaded both of them since mababa na ground clearance ni avanza, lalo pang bababaa kasi kargado nga.. while xpander is still enjoying 20+ mm more buffer bago sumagad.

Price wise, yes the xpander is more expensive than the avanza but you forgot to mention why they are more expensive, It has Cruise control which is great on long trip vacations, it also has an electronic parking brake which is way more advanced in the segment. I noticed no difference in sound between the vehicles when the doors were slammed. Also, there is no way the Expander is worth 141,000p more than the Avanza unless of course one feels that a little more chrome and 17" tires compared to 16" tires is worth paying 141,000p more for. The Expander offers cruise control, but I don't see cruise control being that viable in a Country like the Philippines. Cruise Control is worthless in city driving and is only usable on the open road. In a large Country like the United States that has 6 and 8 lane Interstate highways crossing in all directions cruise control is a great option but not on the majority of Philippine roads.
