- It’s set to be a significant election at the Scottish Parliament - so what is the voting process that elects politicians to Holyrood?
The BBC’s Connor Gillies talks through how 129 Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) are elected through the Additional Member System.
When polls open on 6 May, people in Scotland will have the chance to cast two votes - one for a constituency MSP, and another for a regional ballot.

To anyone confused about the math, don't worry about it. All you do as a voter is cast 2 ballots, one for your local candidate of choice and one for your preferred party.
Not perfect, but far better than the House of Commons system called FPTP
Thanks for the informative video.
I got lost at additional members
Can parties standing in constituencies choose to not be on the regional list if they do choose to game the system in a way?
Thanks :)
Are the constitutients supposed to be inside the region?
Long live Scotland 🤘 🏁💪from hungary!!!! ♥♥ 🏴🏴🏴🏴
Love Scotland. Hoping they don’t leave the UK -couldn’t handle another Brexitplusplus..🤦
Scotland wishes to govern its self without the interference of Westminster.
No we don’t. We had a 2014 referendum and decided to email part of the UK thank goodness.
And the majority still wish to remain in the uk
Why did you have a first choice and second choice and so on .so you could end up with your last choice gets inn so you don’t have a choice the SNP pick who they want inn
Nice and fair (I think)!
I guess the seats by the regional votes are assigned by the parties themselves.
What ranking system do the parties use, if at all?
Here, in Israel, the parties that scream "democracy" the most are actually dictatorial in inner order of candidates...
Also, reserving seats for women and/or "minorities" is NOT democratic and "affirmative action" is racism!
This is "normal" voting where the least wanted party could win...
I've looked into approval voting, ranked voting, star voting, and score voting - but they are all about one winner = not suited for parliaments/multi-party seats.
Do you have recommendation for a multi-party system WITHOUT local/regional partitions = a country as a whole?
It's simple you vote SNP and you get to leave the UK.
Not quite true. The right to hold a referendum is not a devolved power that Hollywood owns
Apparently pretty bad
That's not rigged at all
It's candidly not. It's directly superior to the system used for Westminster (First-past-the-post), as it ensures smaller parties will be represented.
It's really not. It's actually designed in a way that smaller parties can win seats and so that no party can actually have on overall majority.
Labour are crying right now! They lost the popular vote in Scotland LMAO
Hello Ryan lex I’m Ross Greer Education, Finance and External Affairs spokesman for the Scottish Green Party. Did you know Anas Sarwar has pledged his allegiance to me Ross Greer. Of course this happened behind closed doors. I ‘command’ thee Scottish Labour leader. For I’m the puppet master. The point that I must emphasise is that he has served me well. For the Scottish Green Party is the party of the working class. We embody the very spirit of Keir Hardie. I’m a Socialist. Mr. Sarwar is blinded by the ‘right wing ideals’ of the Labour Party.

Labour won the popular vote plurality in the first 2 cycles. Since then they've declined to around 20% of the popular vote. No one has ever won the popular vote majority. Why would they even have the expectation to win even the popular vote plurality? They got replaced in 2016 as 2nd biggest party (in terms of seats).
It is full of nonsense - London gives you power to make a decision about "which color of bins to use for glass and which for paper" - Scottish future decisions still will be made by Londoners. IS IT A GOOD UNION? Unless you become fully independent.
I don't know mate they've brought in a particularly nasty little piece of legislation called the hate bill. I think if you fart in the wrong direction you could get thrown in jail. Welcome to the SNP Scotland.
@@maxrav1831 Scotland is financially so much dependent from UK that whoever was setting this rules before was not a pro Better Scotland but rather HOW TO MAKE MONEY ON SCOTLAND . Really Scotland should leave this bad set up asap. SCOTLAND NEEDS TO ASK FOR PERMISSION... which century do we live..? Do you" ask your neighbours for permission what colour to use for your living room "?
Just imagine if there was a government and first minister in Scotland who did not speak stridently to (and about) England, who did not preach separation, who emphasised cooperation and mutuality. How reassuring that would be . . .
Yeah it’s really sad but I think scotts are too canny to be sucked in by sturgeon and salmond. Sooner that them and Borris is gone the better.
They wouldn't get the job in Scotland if they did that.....
Anger is a great motivator. Switch the general election voting system to STV so conservatives who get 30-40% of the vote don't have working majorities. It would require governments to form coalitions to get a majority. More people would be satisfied. SNP could potentially form a government with others.
Scotland must Have it's own Freedom, We are part of the EU is time we Win for Once, Get out of the Cave !.
🤣 incorrect, we clearly voted to stay part of the union,
Snp are corrupt and destroying scotlabd, open your eyes to their track record of failures, always blamed at Westminster door, even when they are 100% responsible
Scotland independence !!! We had enough of uk
don't you want to be ruled by the Boris the Master ?
We? lol there is no we - just the SNP
@@strofikornego9408 No, not what Scotland would call him. That's why he hides if he has to come up to Scotland for a photo op then sneaks back to Westminster.
No we’ve not. Check out the once in a generation 2014 referendum result.
