My daughter embarks tomorrow in Belgium. I’ve worked two decades to get her there. I’m an alum from F90. We had the SS Universe which was an old Korean warship retrofitted. You guys with the SS Odyssey are so blessed with such a luxurious ship. It was the best experience of my life and I know my daughter will feel the same. I love sas and will go back as a life long learner.

Hi @augustwest5273 , My granddaughter is aboard with your daughter. We have concerns about the recent turn of events and big changes to their itinerary. Would you be amenable to communicating with me about it?

@@angiemooney873 Of course. I just wrote a long response and for some reason it didn’t post. Yesterday the CEO sent a letter around 2:30pm est discussing the change of itinerary. They are cancelling their Red Sea Suez Canal and all Middle East stops and instead turned west and then south and are going to South Africa for a full port stay and then around the Horn of Africa (that’s fun) and will have one other stop and then to Mauritius. They will probably miss India since it’s out of the way but will still hit Malaysia , Vietnam, ad ending in Bangkok which I don’t understand why. I wish they’d end in Japan. The same thing happened to me on my voyage when the Gulf war broke out in 1990. We didn’t go through the Suez and instead went to the Seychelles and then to Kenya Tanzania and around the horn to Brazil and Venezuela. SAS is very good at monitoring global events and adjusting their ports based on stability or instability of certain nations or regions. They take safety very seriously. I think these changes are a good thing and shows how in tune they are. They expect another announcement Tuesday. You can communicate with your granddaughter via WhatsApp. That’s the best means of communicating from the ship. Here is the link to the announcement or you can search the SAS fall 2023 blog. www.semesteratsea.org/fall-2023-voyage-itinerary-change-canceling-suez-canal-red-sea-gulf-of-aden-transit/

@@angiemooney873 Just got an update. They are headed to Gibraltar for one day then to the Canary Islands to refuel and reprovision supplies Oct 30-31 and then headed to Cape Town South Africa Nov 13-18. I wish they weren’t going back to Gibraltar since my daughter did that when they went to Malaga Spain. Canary Islands sounds cool but not the worldly experience they would get going to India. I assume they’ll go to Mauritius after South Africa and then back on track in Southeast Asia with Malaysia , Vietnam, and ending in Bangkok. Just got this update now

@@augustwest5273 thank you ! I rec'd the update too. Of course we were concerned about their safety in the Middle East so it was a relief to know a change of course was in the works but were pretty shocked at the extreme change. After several days and more info we're getting accustomed to the idea but have concerns for extended time at sea without port visits. Hope they don't all go mad.
