They were already committed King of the Hill but were nervous about it being a cartoon. When it proved popular they decided to give another cartoon a chance. That's how that makes sense. This was back when the only real successful prime-time cartoon was the Simpson.

It's not about the specific cartoon. It's about whether or not audiences were willing to watch adult cartoons. If King of the Hill proved successful that proves that the Simpsons wasn't just a fluke.

I have always wonder why if Quagmire is 71, his parents looks so young... I mean, his mom has white hair, ok, she could easily pass... but his transexual mom? She looks like 50-60, even before her transition.
I think that his age was a joke, cuz the creators talked about "story holes" and mentioned that sometimes they put random things to see if the fans are paying attention to the show.
