Just a solid tip to try and fit all the training in. (I train usually 14 hours a week with a full time job) the more you are organised the easier it gets. Meal prep, get your kit out the night before if its a pre work session. You will be surprised what you can do. a 3 hour session after work is not impossible if you have food prepared in advanced for a quick dinner for example.
Humorous anecdote about training/family balance. On a discussion board people were talking about whether wearing your wedding ring on the swim was a good idea. The fear being that cold water can make your finger shrink and the ring fall off. A commenter quipped, if you're still married you aren't training enough!
About to head to Italy next week for my very first IM, I've been asking myself this all week. I feel relaxed, but not much more I can do now, so I've just got to give it everything. Hope I make it across the line. I've learnt so much the past 6 months, what an experience it's been

Finished my first IM at 20yrs old in June at IMCDA this year and it was beautiful. The hottest IM and the highest DNF rate of any IM (in the world I believe) and I managed to finish it. That journey I experienced during training and during those many hours of racing was simply beautiful. Blood, sweat, and tears all made their appearances too! Thank you GTN for helping to get me there

Us big boys got it! Dude! I was 280 when I decided I wanted to live again. Been doing Tris for 21 years. Every distance done. Over 130 triathlons. Still over 200lbs or just under 100kg.
I believe a good advice is: find love in each discipline. Let “joy” on swimming, biking and running come to you. Any of those 3 can become as long as hell if you don’t commit to it and can kick you out of the race if you don’t take it into consideration. Better than wanting to become an Ironman, which sounds good, you want to keep swimming, cycling and running, when that day you find yourself thinking it’s not for you. Which is something all of us have to go through every once in a while. Hope I explained myself
Totally agree. Make it a lifestyle of health and fitness and do an occasional event whether short or long,it doesn't even need to be official, just recorded with a Garmin or similar. Multisport should be a lifelong pursuit whether 3 hours or 20 hours a week.
The cost gave me an idea for a video comparing a cheap vs expensive triathlon training/racing experience over a few weeks followed by a race. One has to minimise equipment costs and one can use whatever they want!
I think that is also good to do a smaller race not just because of the practice of going from swimming, to biking, and then running, but you can see if you like the sport and are willing to invest on the equipment. For example, my first sprint triathlon, I did it during summer time so I didn't have a wetsuit, and I did it in a kid's road bike. with regular running clothes. So if you decide to do more races you can invest little by little.
Nope. I’m not IRONMAN ready. Can’t make it through the swim without debilitating cramps. IM 70.3 is more my style (at least until I can figure out how to survive the swim). However, if I never do a full IM distance event, I’d be ok with that. 70.3s aren’t anything to sniff at.

I'm building towards IM distances in 2 years. Along the way i'm picking up olympics and some 70.3 and some fun like crossduathlons and such. I want to make it "normal" to do an ironman. I'd even be okay with it happening in 3 years. I'd say Ironman training is the ultimate technique to build patience as the main thing you're doing it for is VERY far away. But on the other hand 2 months go by in lightspeed. So i'm wondering if 2-3 years are actually that far away.
Currently not ready but hopefully going for full Ironman in five years. Within a couple of years or next year doing a half Ironman. This year was my first sprint distance so I’ve got some goals to shoot for.

I never really thought about it, i have always done exercise since i was a child, i am now 60years old, i walk 50 plus miles every week, also cycle and do light weights, i just walked a marathon last weekend my first, i am normally out for 5 to 6 hours most days walking, in the last 30 months i have Clocked up 7 thousand miles, with rarely any rest days, zero money though, and so my diet is not great, which i guess is not good if you are thinking about doing an ironman, so all in all i have plenty of time, and the will, but without money and proper food, i guess its a no no, but i am planning on walking 32 miles in May, and will always exercise as much as i can, hats off to all the people that have done an ironman!!

Great video! I think it's good for people to be realistic about how hard that distance is to accomplish correctly. And the cost isn't anything to overlook. I made a video about triathlon gear and how much it would cost and came up with a little over $1500 USD. (not counting the 700 Ironman entry fee) And that's still a lot of budget gear. It'd be easy to spend 10x that amount. Great details in your video here, thanks so much for making it! 👌

Well, i haven't done the Ironman but from my experience of building proper form i must say 6-12 hrs per week in a 6 month for Ironman is beyond optimistic. You need to be already a good athlete and you should be pretty young to reach anything with 6 months only. 3 running swimming cycling 1.5hr sessions would give 13.5 hrs already and you need some muscles building in a gym. I'd question if it's actually would be enough for half Ironman. Plus with that rush there's a high chance of injury that would instantly nullify all your work and postpone the relaunch of the training. So a year is the very minimum, more likely year and a half.

Work 12 long hours dayshift and Nightshiftdont think a be able to a full Ironman do my second Olympic distance triathlon on Sunday . Signing for a 70.3 for next year. Potentially building up to a full Ironman but
Start a savings plan. this was an excellent video to help you. My advice is if you can afford it. Open a separate account. Cal it your Ironman account. Can you afford $25 every pay period? In one year you will have over $600. I get paid weekly. I do a $100 a week. This pays for the whole trip. Race fee. Flight. accommodation. I have two destination races this year. I used my points for a reduced fare flight to Switzerland. Airbnb for 9 days was $500. My other race is Morocco and Marrakesh 70.3. I live in Canada. So I probably have the most expensive flights in the world. I have credit cards that are travel rewards. Get these to help supplement your cost. Hope some of this helps. Remember the Ironman motto. "Nothing is Impossible"......Mine is "Impossible is Nothing"
@@ljk5708 I have done some running events as well. I was surprised at the price difference as well. Thinking about it. With the swim. You need boats and lifeguards. The bike, you need road closures or at the very least police presence at most intersections. I think that adds hugely to the cost of triathlon vs. Running events. My first Ironman was $400. IM Canada came to $865 Canadian for 2020. I prefer the 70.3 series. Those are around $400-$500. Hope you get to do an Ironman. It is an event filled with energy. The feeling you get crossing that finish line is undescribable. Good luck in all your athletic pursuits.
@@pooky2626 To be fair to Liam, you are talking about saving money on a group of things that most people couldn't afford individually. There's no ifs, ands, or buts, people doing Ironman aren't in bottom income brackets.
I do ultra too myself and I have to say that ultras aren't cheap either the Moab 240 Endurance Run cost 1100-1300 just to do a 240.3 mile race in Utah.
Wetsuit may be more beneficial depending on the venue (and a smaller $$ investment) where a decent road bike should get you through an iron an distance race. I'm using my cyclocross bike with trimmer tires for my upcoming HIM distance race. But I'm there to complete, not compete as an age grouper, so that may also affect your choices. Just my 2 cents.
Start with a sprint. I started at 112 kilos. At the start of the year all I did was swim. No running. I hadn't ridden a bike in over 20 years. Did my first sprint in March. Next sprint end July. Weekly long run now up to 15k and I do a half marathon this weekend. Weekly long bike is now 100k+ (on an old steel mountain bike). Hope to do a 70.3 mid next year although I could probably "survive" one in a month or two! I'm at 110 kilos now. It can be done!
Training between 12 to 20 hours a week. My money goes in food, running shoes and lack of earning for the time I spend training instead of working. I burn around 4000 calories per day.

How do i make sure i am in a good shape at raceday. Not exhausted from training, but sharp and ready?
Love your bike tan 😂
700$ entry fee?? I was looking forward to doing one in a few years time but wow that’s a lot of money!!
Wayne Robinson it’s not about saving money I just think it’s way too much, I do ultra trail running but have never paid anywhere near that much.
Working out on my lunch break sounds like me!.👍💪🤠🏊♂️🚴♂️🏃♂️🥋🥊👟
This was great
Just hit 32 years old, I guess im in my prime to try it!
I'll be racing in Italy my first Ironman in 8 days and I was hoping in some extra boost, then 8:22 came... C'mon Mark that's not cool :)
Me too, best of luck man
@@ajscarlett1407 Ty, yuo too.. see you there
What about aluminium-man
The irony of watching this video whilst overlooking the Ironman Wales swim course I’ll be using on Sunday ....
Hope it went well!
Damn!! Am in Africa and training for an Ironman
So how much around would it cost? (Minus the pool & gym fees and minus the food)
I have a question. I have the basic kit for a sprint triathlon but I don't have a wetsuit or a fancy bike. Do I NEED those to go for an ironman?
Wetsuit may be more beneficial depending on the venue (and a smaller $$ investment) where a decent road bike should get you through an iron an distance race. I'm using my cyclocross bike with trimmer tires for my upcoming HIM distance race. But I'm there to complete, not compete as an age grouper, so that may also affect your choices. Just my 2 cents.
At this point really we would be financially better if we're an addict
I can play the riff but the solo is too difficult still
Ik hope next summer
Watching this as an overweight chick who loves watching ppl thrive and wanting to get motivated to thrive myself
Awesome, give it some beans! You've got this!
I’m a 16 year old half-Ironman and I think I would literally die if I tried the ironman.
Never say never 💪🏻🤙🏻
Training between 12 to 20 hours a week. My money goes in food, running shoes and lack of earning for the time I spend training instead of working. I burn around 4000 calories per day.
8-12hr per week? So im waisting my time putting 25 (3hr/day M-F, 6hr sat, 4hr sun)?
Keto Triathlete yes. And also wasting your time keto 😂
No time for hobbies?
People have hobbies other than Ironman/long distance triathlon?
I don't know how to feel about the hours spent, I do that amount of hours and I only train for Sprint's
To get ready for Ironman you first need an arc reactor, a suit of armour and a lot of money.
How many are fit enough to finish in under 17hours within 2 weeks?
Is there age restrictions?
Have fun and make one half-ironman... little less cost... but less Family problems ;)

I've recently read in a very good book about endurance training/lifestyle that back in the day, one of the authors, Mark Sisson, had to pay 85$ to enter Ironman Hawaii. Hahahahahahaha
Which book?
