OH MY GOD!! This brought me to tears. 10 year old me and 54 year old me are joyfully hugging right now. (I'm pretty sure that sentence will only make sense to the people who comment on this video.)
Thank you for this. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You've done something amazing here. I still have my copy of Spacecraft: 2000 to 2100 AD, and it's currently in my library next to the copy of Great Space Battles I (finally) picked up a couple of years ago. I recognized every ship in this video, and could name about half of them off the top of my head.
I'm going to have a stupid grin on my face for days because of this. I can't think of another RUclips video that's ever given me such a feeling of pure, innocent happiness, and I don't know how I could explain that to anyone who didn't grow up with this book.

It did that to me too. :-) I did have the TTA books, but most of the images were already familiar to me from the SF novels they were on originally. Its like seeing the book covers of my youth brought to life. I don't care what Stewart Cowley says, the "Stellar Queen" was always the "Hooded Swan" from Brian Stableford's Star Pilot Grainger novels to me.

Same here now you need to live it, get "No man's sky" game and disappear for a few days or weeks. It's obvious where they got their art style from. Camera mod in the game is special.

    Hi all,
Many thanks for all the comments. Bit of an update: As things are looking a bit slack in the paid work department, for obvious reasons :-( I should have a bit of spare time, so there's a possibility of more TTA stuff. I'm actually just doing a few scenes for a new one based on 'Starliners', probably the least well known of the four original books. More news as it happens!

Ah yes, Starliners. I still have all of mine (Spacecraft 2000 to 2100 AD, Great Space Battles, Spacewreck and Starliners) from when I bought them in bookstores in the 70s and 80s. I remember going to the bookstore constantly, waiting to get the next one in the series.

@@caliban88 Starliners... always a tricky one to find. Also, I only have 'Great Space Battles' in softcover - would love to have the hard cover of that one to complete the set.
Also, and update on Starliners... I'm about 85% done on a short 'Starliners' video... two tricky bits left to sort out, but as I've got a bit of time on my hands, it shouldn't take long to finish!

I remember a few years back that there was talk of connecting back with Cowley on another book, a reboot of sorts. It was going to be called 'Capital Ships' but alas, it guess it never got off the ground. I'm 52 years old and when I looked at your video, I was quite amazed with myself at being able to rattle off the names of the ships. There were a couple I didn't recognize, but that goes to show how much I read and re-read those books. I would spend hours looking at every one of them and let them my imagination carry me into each of their stories.

A childhood friend of mine introduced me to this series of sci-fi art back in the late 70's and lost touch of this tittle of artwork after I moved to Houston, TX. Now, almost 40 yrs. later and I see this beautiful animated presentation of it and brings back memories just the same. Granted, most of these publications are no longer printed but are available on ebay as well as an RPG based on the TTA series. Word of advice, if you plan to shop for these publications do so wisely; but, if money is no objection and you mind not sparing any expense... go for it, it's your money (LOL). Still... thanks for rekindling our memories.

oh my god....You would not BELIEVE the size of the nerdgasm I am having right now! The TTA Spacecraft book was my ABSOLUTE favourite book when I was a 8-12 year old kid dreaming of the future to come, where anyone could fly into space and not just an elite few, when interstellar war took the place of intercontinental, and above all, starcraft were designed by Stewart Cowley's elite team of Angus McKie, Bob Layzell and 3 or 4 others who'se names I don't recall off the top of my head. I got my best friend to read the book and admire the astounding art, and we spent weeks LARPing in the TTA universe (long before anyone know what larping was, even us) and battling the dreaded Proxima Centaurians whenever they landed to invade Terra. To see these amazing starcraft all over again when I thought I had lost the book 10+ years ago when moving THANK YOU OP! You have made my day, my week, my month and even my year if you merely uploaded it, but if you had any hand in the creation of these stunning animations you deserve far more then a 'nice job' you deserve worship.

      Hi Paul,
Allow me to fill in the blanks, if I may:
3:16 - that's the Battleship "Umberto" from 'Great Space Battles". Plus a few "Mako" cruiser escorts and a few Hornets.
      3:39 - Proximan K-4 'Toad" Interceptor
4:26 - AAF 225 Cobra, + K7 PIranha + other random ship purely as background
      Well spotted though!
Regarding Umberto: Always been a bit of a 'pet project' to imagine what it would look like, based on the small bit we can see in "Great Space Battles". I hope my Umberto fits in with the overall TTA style. I've even written a backstory for it, and created a double-page spread for it, as it would appear in the book "TTA: Capital Ships". A book, which I'm afraid to say, I have the only copy, and unfortunately will probably stay that way for the foreseeable future. :-(

Ahhhh... thank you ! I am so happy that you took such loving care in producing this video. The subject matter was was so impressive to begin with, so many of those magnificent works of art were beautifully kinetic to begin with and all told a story in their own right (independent of Stewart Cowley's interpretation for his narrative), but you sir... you brought them to life and imbued them with soul through your incredible CG artistry and selection of sublime music. More than a million thanks you's for bringing this fantastic book to life, like many commenting here this book was a key corner stone in my Sci Fi life and pushed my imagination.
Believe it or not I still have my original copy of this hard bound book with the cover, a little tattered on the edges but it here on the shelf with me in my office as I write this.

This is absolutely stunning and brought back memories of when I was given the first Terran Trade book for Christmas. I bought the other three many years later (Starliners can be quite expensive, for a decent copy). And yes, I could name all the ships!

Thank you! You seriously wouldn't believe my utter astonishment that new TTA fans are still discovering this thing after all these years! I only did it because I could do basic 3D animations and love the TTA books, and wanted to see for myself what they might have looked like in motion. The reward has been all these comments and being able to give something back to what I suppose we might call the TTA community.... Honestly, I haven't made a brass farthing from it, and that's OK.
"TTA: Unidentified" is still very much in the works - if I get it right, you'll simultaneously a) wet yourself, b) demand that you mommy makes it stop and c) watch it over and over again!
I have the soundtrack, 80% of the modelling & texturing done, the storyboard and timing set out, and it already scares the living crap out of me! All I need now is an M3 Ultra Mac Studio and a 27 hour day!

What a beautiful job bringing these to life, I teared up a bit the first time I saw it.
These books were a huge influence on my childhood. Still hunting for a copy of Starliners I can justify paying for, but I managed to get a copy of Spacewrecks recently, and I had saved the rest in pretty good shape.
Hoping to do some 3d printed models of these eventually.

Why have I only just discovered this masterpiece? Thank you so much for bringing the memories to life.
What's the chance of re-rendering these in 2023 quality and uploading as HD? That'd be fantastic.
Also, it would be really nice to have captions with the names and allegiances of the craft being shown.

    • @Erny_Module
      @Erny_Module  Год назад +1

      Hi Jolyon,
Glad you enjoyed it - and welcome to the TTA fan family! 🙂
Re-rendering: Yes, quite doable - mostly just a matter of upping the output resolution and re-rendering, so technically possible. The fly in the ointment is that it would tie up my Mac with rendering, which I need for work which pays the bills! But I take the point, it would be great to see this at 1080p at least. For 4k, I'd need to improve the textures of the craft all round, which is distinctly non-trivial!
Captions? I toyed with the idea - I guess it would be simple enough, so as time allows I'll do that.
But mostly, I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks! You quite right, and in fact, the tune came first! Long time Trance fan - think "Tranceport" and "Trance Nation". Loved this tune, and had the visuals/pacing in my head - I'd tried some other tunes as a soundtrack to TTA stuff, but... meh! It really came together with this one. So glad that others can identify and appreciate it!
Just wait till you see "TTA: Unidentified"!
