I was aTexas Blacksmith, I grew up at the forge with the Music of Steeleye span playing in my workspace. Until one day when I was able to bring them to Houston, and a great storm broke. In the process of trying to bring their equipment in from the rain, my left shoulder was torn from the socket I refused treatment at hospital and returned. And, may God Bless Maddy Prior, I got to hear her sing! Life is complete!
Every time I hear a Steeleye Span song I think of times long ago open fields with trees, horse and cart. And Alison Gross popping out of the trees and casting a spell on some unfortuate soul. Love the video
I have only just got into this group, although knew Gaudete from Christmasses stretching back 30 years or so. Their music sends me to places I could never imagine music could do. As a bass player, I love the prominent bass and the mix of modern and old instrument sounds is just superb. I'm in awe.
The arrangement of this song is so sparse, but never leaves me wanting. There is much suggested that isn't being played but our imaginations fill out the space for us. this song is pure magic. Steeleye Span (nearly) always delivers.

I hope this is written in the Steeleye Canons, Harold, for it sure is a worthy story. Glad you got to hear Maddy
Thank you - made my evening, to travel back to the time when music had a soul and a heart.
Beautiful song ❤
This is Steeleye Span at their very best. I loved Ashley Hutchings bass lines

One of those hidden gems - making hours of sifting through RUclips entirely worth it. Gorgeous.

no words for how brilliant this is...midlae late night tales got me into English folk..the purity and honesty
Twelve years ago I first heard this song, and the text and voice still break my heart. Amazing piece of musicianship.
A very impressive song by all means!
Greetings from Hellas!
My favourite version of this song ! Maddy's voice is lovely - she sounds like a damsel in distress !
A wonderful arrangement. Great example of the diversity and scale of British folk music.
I often wonder how clever the blacksmith looked like *without* his hammer in his hand ...
What a damn fine song.
Prime exponents of British folk in its peak era. Really nice - the acapella section really puts it over the top..
Perfectly illustrated!
When I first met the man who was to become my husband, he was singing this song while working on an archaeological dig.
Wonderful. One of my favourites.
The powerful voice of Maddy Prior!
My favourite Steeleye Span track. I sometimes perform it myself.

just brilliant
Love the album cover - rough-weaved cloth and plough man with his team - a nod to those who are the subjects of these songs
Planxty Blacksmith the Best!
Thank you! This is the version I've been looking for. I'm not sure why it's so hard to find.

To be honest I'd much prefer to hear Maddi doing more traditional folksy versions of these songs. Bit of a waste if you ask me.
Manchester The Sports Guild Folk music and trad jazz n billiards. Great story songs
