    Excellent set up! Congrats! Please, replace retropi by ZXBaremulator.. its free and you will have a 99% Zx experience. Only 4 sec of bootup (no linux, just spectrum in Pi baremetal). Runs on any Pi model and very good emulation of all zx models. You can use usb keyboards and joysticks.. and optionally even a 0 lag real zx keyboard and joystick through gpios acting as Address and Data bus of the zx. I'm using it routently and 3d printing now a zx case usign original rubber keys and touch keyboards adapters. Just have a try.. you won't regret!

    Hi again, after few days spent trying to recreate this wonderful project, I've noticed that there is a "big" issue you must be warned of. Basically this keyboard has two mode: the A mode emulates a spectrum keyboard, so with FUSE (and only with FUSE, not lr-fuse that is the pre-installed zx emulator in retropie) it works exactly as a real spectrum, every key or key combo works. The B mode is more a USB 40keys standard keyboard.
    Now the problem is: if you set the A mode, the experience is exactly like a real spectrum, but you definitely need another device in order to control FUSE (for example to exit from the emulator) since there's no way to press F1 or the ESC key for instance. If you go with the B mode, everything works fine for gaming and only for gaming. There's not even a way to, for instance, write Load "" since the Symbol Shift + p doesn't work.
    At this point the only way to recreate a complete spectrum experience would be to add another step to this hack, and use an arduino in the middle. You should be able to google around and find a clever project by a guy that has been able to "liberate" the recreated zx spectrum using an Arduino Leonardo and a USB hub (but it could be done with a smaller pro micro and it should fit this keyboard, unfortunately this latter way is a little beyond my iron soldering skills...).
    So right now an important improvement would be to leave the A/B switch functional, in order to be able to control FUSE (and emulation station) and have the complete zx keyboard when needed. Or at least take an USB port outside the key.

    This is cool and with those raspberry pie boards & 3D printed or molded cases from different game consoles,gaming handhelds, 80's pc's, we can fake those systems trough emulation with almost no distinction from the real systems,great as an alternative way to play past 80's & 90's games on it.

    Would it be possible and easier (apart from hacking the keyboard a bit more to expose sockets on circuit board) to use a Raspberry pi3, running it off the mains so no need to wire in a on off switch, battery etc. Hook up to TV with hdmi and 2 usb exposed for usb controllers?

    I've got an issue with this keyboard in retropie -> fuse. Apparently the symbol shift key doesn't work (it works fine at the raspbian command prompt anyway). Also every time I do press the space button, I get the onscreen help. Is there a way to have it work like the real speccy keyboard? (BTW it's unlocked and in B mode).

    Oooh he said ZED X Spectrum! Your pronunciation sir is perfect! Love what you did here. I LOVE the old speccy. Wonderful memories. I want to setup the spectrum emulator on my Pi but everytime I run a game it nearly always drops to the flashing cursor screen. How do I get them to autorun? Also having trouble getting xbox360 controller mapped. Anyone be able to advise me?

  • @XimoXThe
    @XimoXThe 3 года назад

    The only problem with this is that , because of the single core cpu, you have no sound on hdmi and no analog jack, so basically you cant have sound, and a spectrum emulator without sound sucks. Solution is to use raspberry pie 3 A+ which is still small enough to fit inside the recreated and has output sound on hdmi and also a stereo jack ( also faster pi)

    Honestly?
    I really don't like this setup, mostly because i have never touched a zx spectrum, but if it was a snes or a gba, i would love it
    But this makes a big question: can you put a raspberry pi inside a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse?
    To make it like a portable working station to work from the living room and using the TV as a monitor

  • @massimodileo7169
    @massimodileo7169 7 лет назад

    One question: is the keyboard recognized as a full zx keyboard in the emulator (for instance are you able to use the basic? Or use the "keyboard" as game control option?) or it's only used as a kind of joypad?

    I started working on this setup but I just realized that the way you implemented this you lost the ability to change the keyboard to the zx spectrum mode. This means that you can't do any basic programming and use it as a real speccy keyboard. You just use it as a regular keyboard mapped through emulation station. I need to figure out how to improve on this.
