- I was a volunteer in 2012 in a South African refuge, and one of the animal we were taking care of was a female hyena, Roxie.
Every week we would clean the enclosure, which was full of completely white poop because they event eat and digest the bones of their prey. And we were also feeding her, which is when this video was taken.
The resident hyena Roxie get excited when it's time for her to food, and let us know loudly !
Taken at Glen Afric farm in South Africa during a Volunteer Southern Africa program.
Imagine someone breaking into your home and they just hear this from the darkness.
Their pants are the loser in this case .

Big difference when you hear it in person. You can feel it vibrating your ears and chest, I was lucky to hear 6 of them at once and it was terrifying. Pretty awesome animal tho real sweet and adorable.

A minor correction to everyone saying Hyena's laugh only when stressed. They laugh when experiencing any form of arousal, which can be stress sure, but also excitement, anticipation, pain, fear, or anger/agression.
In this case the laugh may merely be anticipation about receiving food. (although stress could certainly also be an option). I don't see any real signs of fear, she's not cowering, nor taking an agressive/defensive pose (so no agression either), nor running away. If anything she is rather excitedly running along the fence, which makes me suspect the food is making her excited.

I wouldn't say they are entirely equivalent.
Cat's purr when resting or content, in addition to when they are stressed. So even when cats are not aroused they purr.
Which probably means it's a form of self-comforting.
The Hyena's laugh on the other hand may be more communicative in function, signaling excitement/activity to the rest of the group, so they are in turn alert.

@Talastra It is a bit sad how we have demonized Hyena for no particular good reason is it not? A Lion is a lot more likely to kill you than a Hyena. Generally you have to give Hyena a good reason to attack you but a Lion will gladly take you out as a matter of course.

Not to be a party popper or anything, but a Heyenas laugh isn’t actually a laugh in the way we laugh. They make laughing like sounds mainly as a reaction to stress or interest, making that sound to show they’re anxious, want another Heyena to leave them alone, or see something if interest.
Mug 'o Hot Cocoa also they are not having the time of their life, male hyenas are treated the worst in the animal kingdom arguably. I feel bad for them.
Michael/Krista Reed I mean yeah, I feel like hyenas, wolves, or any animal that has some sort of hierarchy they live in, will likely not have the best living conditions for the un-preferable sex. Plus just living in the Wild itself isn’t really a time of your life. I hate taxes and school and everything but at least I don’t have to worry about lions eating me.
