David Wildcat fam. Sorry I missed this. Here is the mod video.

Is there peeling with this smoker? I been watching this one but the reviews don't really give me much security
So these arent for things like cooking burgers and stuff like. Strictly smoking meat? Sorry first time home owner newb here. I bought one of these and after watching this video not sure if i made the right choice.
I’d be willing to bet most of us smokers started out with cheap, thin, leaky pits. You will look back one day and see this pit as the “one” that taught you how to: A) Manage fire, B) Manage time, C) Learn the characteristics of different woods, D) Wood/flavor profiles, E) …. You will also see the long-term value of the more expensive pits, and how much easier they are to operate. This smoker is the start of your offset journey, and I’m glad you’re sharing this and letting us all be a part of it.
This was my first offset. A year later and many smoked dinners later, it's still going strong
Right on!
I'm glad I found this channel. It's February, and I'm getting this grill before march. Gonna be a great summer
Thanks!
I bet you're gonna have fun cooking on that offset and I'm sure you'll learn a lot. Have fun and Happy Father's Day to ya brother!!! Cheers!!!
Yessir! Thanks for stopping by! Happy Father’s Day to you too! Cheers brother Troy!
Looks like a decent smoker. I ha a cheap offset that I started with too but that's where I learned the most. Once you seal it up it will work fine for you. Thanks for the shout outs brother. 👍🏼
Anytime! Thanks brother! Have a good one!
Really great vid showed me everything I needed my dude great!
Right on! Much appreciated!
Part 2. I did notice alot of leaks but i manage to keep the temperature at 225 to 250, i was up all night messing with it but even after 10 hours i wasn't able to get the bark color on it. What should i do ? Get a different smoker?
My wife just scored me this for an early Father’s Day gift.
And mines different?!? Like same size same offset. But the shelves and handles are red colored wood. It is a bitch and a half to build so I didn’t even get to see if she’s leaking. But this video is also 4 years old so I’m HOPING (fingers crossed) that they’ve improved on there inexpensive smoker. Monday is going to be my first cook so we shall see.
Same I just put mine together
Update ok yea she leaks just as bad ahahaha im gonna do the mods you posted in the other video. But she cooks great ,temperature builds quick and as long as you dont open and close her a bunch she holds temp great. Very happy with my first cook on it. But she needs mods for sure
Me too 😅 I’m here for the same reason. Happy Father’s Day!
@@decoriunhenry3522 Happy Father’s Day! You’re gonna love it. I cooked for 4 people comfortably and it gets to temp QUICK. Have fun!!!
Happy Father's Day CJ!!! Great video on this Offset. You can definitely mod this up to make it work for you, just takes some time and experimentation but that's part of the fun. And the best part is, since it was inexpensive if in 3-6 months you decide this is not the grill for you at least you can say you got some experience with this style of cooking and you can just donate the grill to someone. Hope you and your family have a great day!!!
Hey thanks brother! Hope you have a great Father’s Day too!
Congrats CJ on the new cooker, have fun with it!
Thanks you sir! Cheers!
Just got this one. Picked it up because I'm just starting my smoking journey. Great video
I just ordered this one today, should be here Friday I'm excited. My first grill and I have never smoked meat but I'm excited to learn with this
Very cool! Good luck! Cheers
thanks for making this
Nice fun new toy. Good video. Good job explaining everything.
Thanks brother! Cheers!
Hey Brother, every has to start somewhere. You mod video should be a good one in helping people with similar smokers who can’t get a high $ $ smoker ! Great job brother!
Thanks brother! Happy dad’s day! Cheers!
hey CJ i was wondering does that side table fold down? or is it fixed in place after installation?
Trying to decide which cover to purchase they have 3 options for these grills that i see
jefeworx ! No it doesn’t fold down. Front or side.
My side box doesnt close all the way what should i do?
Awesome video, thank you!
Thanks!
I got one for Fathers day been a propane user for many years until now !! Got Kingsford original charcoal for it also gonna put it together after work tomorrow very excited! Appreciate the video !!!
Right on!
Hey CJ great video! I also have a COS .. different brand, but my chimney attached through the lid instead of on top of it - maybe look at that to see if it'd leak less?
Also, can't wait for Thursday with Gallery BBQ!
Thanks brother! I think I got the mods I want to do down. I’ll check it out though. Thanks!
Most excellent first, started, and entry level offset. I’m upgrading really soon. You may be able to use those fire box grates to even out the temps in the cooking chamber. You’ve seen my mods before. It really nice to see the smoke rolling at your House Brother. Thanks for sharing
Thanks brother! I’ll be watching your mods again for the helpful hits! Have a great Father’s Day! Cheers
Hey bro.....wait till you see the custom unit I am having done.
Just recieved this grill for my birthday 👍🏽
ongomagic right on! Well happy birthday! Cheers
Hey CJ just got this grill to start me off! Thanks for the info!
Right on!
really great video man
Thank you!
Happy Fathers Day CJ. Have fun with the offset! Cheers!
Hey you too! Cheers!
How’s the condition 2 years later? Thinking about getting one but not if they don’t last.
Did you put the charcoal and wood on the bottom of the offsetter and put the grate over them or on top of the grate? Also which position did you put the charcoal pan in the cooker? Highest, lowest or middle? I just got one of these and can't figure it out.
Matt Urban I took the grill grates out of the offset side and just burned the wood and charcoal in there. I had the charcoal pan on the lowest setting.
I’ve also cooked on the charcoal pan in the cooker too.
I’m still trying to get used to it myself. I’m going to do a couple mods on it soon and film it. Hopefully have it on here in a week or two.
Just got mine in the mail today! From the comments I wont be disappointed
Awesome!
Happy Father's Day CJ. That should be a good smoker to learn on, once you learn to fix all the problems, just think how much better you will be on a nicer smoker. Nicely Done. Thanks for sharing. 😎.
Yes definitely, totally agree! Thanks for stopping by. Cheers
what are the dimensions of the box where it is packed?
Is it 1/4” or just flimsy metal? Also is there a grease trap?
Loved your video. After all this time would you say it’s worth buying as a starter? Also, were you able to get the smoke escaping under control?
It’s a pretty good starter offset for the price.
I just got this smoker and am using it for the first time this weekend. First time ever smoking ribs. Hopefully I can keep it lit lol great video!
You got this! Thank you!
Received it yesterday and used it today after prepping it last night! Where cab I find a cover for my offset smoker grill?
Gwendolyn Buchanan this is the one I use.
amzn.to/2yb6B62
Another cool video, you’ll get the hang of it Brother no worries.
You’ll be turning out good food like you always do👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Ric! Appreciate it brother! Have a good one. Cheers!
Nice!!
got this for my dad recently and the only thing he found annoying that it was missing a fastner of some kind where the shoulder bolt is supposed to go for the latch for door, he had to jerry rig it
Amazing! Thanks for the video.
Do you feel like you really recommend the mods? Or will it work okay without?
You’re welcome. Yes, so the mods. It helps a ton. This offset is really cheaply made, and the mods help tighten it up.
were can I go in Houston TX to have my grill assembly the same as on this video 30 inch Royal Gourmet barrel charcoal grill with offset smocker
I’m sorry I have no idea. I’m in SoCal
What's that thing he used for the charcoal
Cool video. Ima buy it to start this hobby
Very cool, thanks!
I'm anxious to watch the mods video. I started on a very similar smoker (Brinkman). The two issues I always struggled with were leaks and ash management. Went through a lot of charcoal because of the leaks and then ash buildup would start smothering the remaining charcoal. Getting the ash out during a cook was a nightmare.
Yeah I’m thinking the ash part is going to be a pain too. I’ll figure something out. Have a good one! Cheers!
Looks like it will get the job done CJ!
Definitely! Thanks for watching brother.
I'm not sure if you'll see this, but thanks for making this man! Looking for my first grill on my dad journey.
Right on! Don’t forget to click your tongs twice before you start. Have a good one.
Nice father's day gift! Have fun with your new toy!. I got a Weber kettle today! Smoking some chicken. It's a good day. Happy Father's day brother!
Right on! I love my kettle! Happy Father’s Day to you too!
Thanks CJ George.
nice little smoker brotha, it will cook up some good eats. Hope you had a great Fathers day CJ.
Thanks brother. It was a great day. Happy Father’s Day to you.
Hey CJ, congrats on the new cooker bro. I’m sure you’re gonna have a good time getting used to cooking on an offset 👍
Thanks brother! Happy Father’s Day buddy.
That looks like a fun new toy CJ. Yea those projects always take longer than expected that’s why we have beer lol. Happy Fathers Day and looking forward to watching you use that thing. I’ve been wanting one too and saw a cheap one at sportsman’s warehouse yesterday. Anxious to see how it goes.
Thanks Gary! Appreciate it! Happy Father’s Day to you too! Cheers
Hey CJ, I just got my first stick burner as well. There is a learning curve that I am starting to understand. I did some similar mods to mine and a few tweaks. Brother we can learn together. Smoking with wood splits is quite different than using Charcoal and wood chunks / chips! I can't wait to see your follow up videos on this subject! [Phil]
Right on! Definitely lots to learn! Hope you have a great Father’s Day brother! Cheers
Hi thanks for the video! I’m actually looking for a good grill for my boyfriend for Christmas he wants to get his first grill and can’t decide in a good one but I know he also wants a smoker and I found this one on Home Depot! I was wondering if you would recommend this one for a first timer?
Yes, I would, it’s why I bought it. I wanted to make sure I’d use and get the hang of using an offset grill before I put some cash into a bigger and better one.
I also did a video for modifications on it, check it out if you buy this one. The mods really help.
Starter of the starter of the starter! Lol! You got to start somewhere, that will be great to experiment with!
Hey thanks Tom! Hope you have a great Father’s Day!
its a left handed smoker, now I know why I like mine so much!
Right on!
Thanks for the video. I just put mine together and will be grilling on the 4th. The leaks are a bummer but I’ll see what I can do with It. My wife picked It up for Father’s Day but It was back ordered for a while. I’m going to subscribe and look for the mod video.
Right on thanks! I’m going to try to get the video done this week, I plan on using mine on the 4th too. Have a good one. Cheers
Morning! Just put the mod video out this am. Have a great 4th!
I got a grill and ofset smoker just like that one for my bday last year broh, never got to use it. Well last week my girl told her family that i would smoke a brisket for Christmas
Great idea bro. Start with something that won't break the bank. Look forward to seeing what you do with it.
Thanks Scott! Congrats on all your growth! I noticed the other day. Over 12k that’s freak’n sweet. Cheers!
@@CookingWithCJ I appreciate it bro. It went fast but has quickly leveled off. Still plugging away as much as I can.
Nice looking offset CJ ... Mods will deffently help but looks like a great new tool
Thanks brother! Cheers!
“I’m CJ”
😂😂😂
Great review !
Nice new toy, CJ 👍🏼. I’ve been eyeing offsets but am unsure and need to make room so my wife doesn’t string me up lol. Cheers, brother 🍻
Thanks brother! Definitely running out of room. Lol! Have a good one! Cheers
I'm in the search for a grill and I'm planning on getting this one. Why did you put aluminum foil? You put it on top of charcoal? Why?
I used it as a drip pan and put some water in to keep more moisture in there.
I've been waiting for this one! Yep......don't you hate putting these things together.....always turns into a half day project. I think this will be a good pit to get your feet wet on trying to tame one of these beast! There are a lot of Mods and upgrade Vids out there for these kind of smokers that may help you.
Sealing the cabinet is a good start for you because what you want and need is to have proper draw through the pit. It needs that airflow for it to burn the splits properly.
Having thick metal really isn't necessary in a pit if you have good airflow. The next thing you need to think about is controlling temps by the amount of wood you are burning.
When that log finally ignited for you......I can guarantee your temps went through the roof. Also before it ignited you probably had a ton of thick smoke. So what you need to do is add smaller splits more frequently. You need them to catch fire and burn clean as fast as possible.....or you are gonna have some barbecue that tastes like a house fire.
I recommend watching my latest video on Fire Management. I guarantee it will help and give you the information you need. With the pit you have it's not gonna be easy....
but I believe you will know what to do when you do upgrade to something better. Hope this helps. Metal On! \m/
Thanks brother! I just watched it. I was telling Mrs CJ I need to bring an axe out back because of it. You were right about the temps going through the roof. I’ll get it down for sure. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers!
Hey Ken.....I am having a custom one built this next month bro....3/8 thick!!
@@digitalayon Wait?.....What?!?! 3/8"??????? Are You sure You got that right? LLLLLLLL.
Only You would go overboard like that! I Love It!!!! Can't wait to see the design. Don't tell me now....I want to be surprised!
Heavy Metal On.....Hell Yeah!!!!!! \m/
Heavy Metal Bar-B-Que yup yup....going to be a month or so and still tweaking some ideas. You know me....doing stuff that’s different. Might as well call me that “one-off” dude. I want this to be a versatile smoker. Wife wants me to consolidate down. And she is right. I will be letting go of one of my 1/4 inch Brinkmann smokers that Roger Davidson built. Don’t get me wrong because I love the 16 inch diameter units. BUT I have been selling BBQ out of my back yard the last two months. Utah allows this with a new enacted law to sell food out of a home without a Kermit. So this would be a stepping stone to a smoker trailer. But I want this to be a unit to use for multiple things. Running ideas by the builder. I just could not get what I wanted with the stuff from Texas. This will be a 800 plus pounder for sure.
@@digitalayon LLLLL I Love It! I originally said overboard........but what I needed to say was....."Overkill"! That is BadAss my Brother! I know what ever You have planned for your future it will be a success! I'm glad to know You, and I'm excited for You! Give'em Hell!!!!! \m/
Excellent video im wanting to buy this
Thanks!
@CookingWithCJ hey i just orded everything with the links you had. Cause of your second video I'm going to mod mines like how you did yours. How's the grill by the way is their a updated video?
Good video just curios of how long it took you to assemble it
Thanks. It took me 45 min or so. Lots of parts for sure.
NIce with a new toy. All offsets here are similar to yours, not seen any that are heavy duty like the ones i see in the BBQ guys videos. I now feel a bit encouraged to get one similar to yours.
A roll of gasket should take care of a lot of the leakage :)
Thanks brother! Yeah I got the stuff to mod it a bit. I’ll make it better for sure.
Not a bad for a cheap offset!! Great video brother!! How did the first set of ribs taste???
Thanks brother! They turned out very good.
Hey CJ just doing my seasoning now. I hope it goes well. My other comment seems to have disappeared. Have you had trouble with the gasket peeling off anywhere?
yeah it does when the fire box gets too hot. I've had to replace it before.
@@CookingWithCJ Thanks bro. Smoking up a Boston butt this Sunday. My first ever. Do you recommend boneless, or bone in? Also tossing around the idea of going live. Nut I think k video recorded might be best for my first time.
Can you tell me the measurements of the firebox?
Came here to see how to fully assemble. He doesn't. Gotta look else where. Enjoy your beer bud.
Oo fun new toy !! :) It looks nice and I wonder how many home cooks even notice or worry about the leaks? Will love to see what you can do with it ! Hope you had a great Father's day :)
Mel's Simple Meals hey thanks Mel! Appreciate it! It was a great day for sure.
Ya gotta fix air leaks or you won’t be able to control your temp
I bought myself one and I'm planning on making some Hawaiian style baby back ribs by smoking with the kiawe wood smoking chunks since it's a Hawaiian mesquite and I'll also baste it with the homemade pineapple BBQ sauce
Wasnt my first choice of offset smoker!!!! My wife and her bargain shopping a$$!!!! Jumped the gun and ordered me this joint!!! Havent put it to use yet. Its still in the box till i get home off the road. Good video cj!!!! O baller ass pool homie
Yep my wife did the same thing. I just dropped the mod video. Check it out, it helped. I did some bomb ribs last weekend after I did the mods. Worked a whole lot better. And thanks brother. Cheers!
I just assembled mine it took me a whole freaking hour instructions are decent give em a read before hand
Hello, I noticed this grill was purchased in 2019 and wanted to know how is it holding up till this day? I wanted to purchase as a gift but worry about the metal quality? TIA ❤️
If you take care of it, cover it, keep it clean, etc… it should last awhile. I don’t have mine anymore. But this is a good beginner pit.
Hey CJ, I am a wanna be smoker gal! I just put together the same pit you have in this video. After watching you I bought the high temp. gasket on put it on the smoker door. The door is so light weight that it needs more help to eliminate smoke leaks. I am looking for some weights for the handle, but don't know where to begin. Any ideas?
Thanks for your channel your amazing to watch.
My warming rack I can’t get it to stay up what am I doing wrong?
It has groves to fit in and stay up. If it’s missing the groves, then you might want to call the manufacture hotline.
Cooking With CJ is there anyway I can attach a pic to show?
Just watched your video looks really good. How is it by now? still working well?
Yeah I still dig it. I actually just used it on my new BBQ channel. Here is the link to that video.
ruclips.net/video/7DH3aOFuLtI/видео.html
Thank you for a good video. Can I know the size of the box?
최영복 it’s 30 inches wide. 183 square inches of cooking space.
Lefty’s rule - glad to see a company that doesn’t discriminate against us Lefty’s. Nice starter offset. If it produces fire and smoke - you can cook in it. The leaks are not quite a big deal there I So Cal as your outdoor temp is pretty consistent- more of a annoyance for you than anything.
Yessir! Really appreciate ya stopping by. Cheers!
Cj, I bought the same cheap smoker but I'm in the army deployed overseas right now... I never had to deal with smoke leaks in my high end smokers... How\what did you use to seal the smoke leaks with ...?
Also I'm sitting at a much lower elevation and extreme dry heat, what else would you do with the environment I'm in to help with rubbery skin,. I like slow and low but it's tuff on the skin I'm smoking here. Thank you, new subscriber.
Hey thanks! And first, thank you for your service.
I see you also found the mods video, I’ll answer your questions on that one.
As far as rubber skin, I assume you’re taking chicken, I give it the smoke and low temps, until it’s about 20 degrees from being done, the fire up the pit temps. To like 375-400f. It’ll crisp up that skin.
@@CookingWithCJ thank you, I appreciate the support 🪖. Yes, I'm talking chicken, I will give that a try and let you know 💪🏿.
Idk. I've looked at #2 a lot before this video and i kept seeing that they aren't sealed well and leaks a ton of smoke. It's tempting but don't want to fix something i just bought.
Yeah I get it. Thanks
I need an offset and I think you have just bumped it to the top of my wish list CJ :)
Right on! Have a good one Pete! Cheers!
Doing my first cook as I type thos on mine. For the price, I. Lovi g it so far. One day when I know what I'm doing, I will invest in a legit one.
Awesome!
How did u keep the small rack from falling.
There’s a metal lip on each side.
@@CookingWithCJ I tried that but it keeps falling when I open the grill.
I honest don’t know why it would happen. Maybe reach out to royal gourmet? See if they can send a new one that fits?
@@CookingWithCJ ill try that thanks
How long did it last you
I had it for like 2 years, then gave it to a family member, as far as I know it’s still burning.
Got me one to learn how to smoke im kinda nervous lol
Definitely a learning process. But it’s fun as hell.
Happy Father’s Day CJ. How were the ribs? Yeah you can fix the leaks or you can just deal with it. It may not last that long. I had a cheap off set when I was young man back on in the nineties it didn’t make it three or four months. The fire box rusted through the bottom. That was my irresponsibility, I didn’t clean the ashes as I should, I let them sit in there between cooks.
It did ok ribs and chickens but I really screwed up a brisket with it.
My advise is clean the ashes every time, within first 24 hours after cook.
Good luck with it.
Ok thanks for the tip! Will do. Hope you have a happy Father’s Day too!
The ribs turned out pretty good considering the temp roller coaster ride... lol
Hey CJ,
Left or right it's like your car garage, it doesn't mater what side of the house it's on, it's all the same. But CJ, Dude you didn't season it first. You took it out the box, put it together, and put meat on it. You got to cook all that factory gunk out of it first. Good video, lookig at the same one on Amazon too.
Tony You’re right brother! I knew it, I usually do it, but I just jumped the gun. Put all that work into it, it was getting late, and just said screw it.... a little factory chemicals in my ribs will put some hair on your chest... lol. Hey thanks for watching. It’s much appreciated!
Hows it holding up?
I gave it away last year. It’s a great beginner pit.
Good way to start, cheap, and see if you like it. Next thing you know you'll be begging the wife to spend the cash on a big rig.. Lol. Have fun with her CJ!
Lol! Ya probably! Have a good one!
Hey CJ how do you season this grill?
Just did a burn in with charcoal. Opened up the vent and stack. Took the temps to 350-400 for 30 min or so.
@@CookingWithCJ cool thanks. Do you have any instructional videos on how to load? Also why are the bricks in there?
M. Bison I done a couple videos with it. On this channel. And on my bbq channel Cj’s Que. and the bricks help regulate the temps. Helps be more consistent.
M. Bison both channels have a couple videos. But I don’t use it that often.
@@CookingWithCJ Thanks bro I enjoy you videos!
Hey bud just got this same grill. When do you think you're going to do the mods video?
Tommy Reed hey right on! I’m going to try to work on it this week to drop this weekend. If not it will be done by next Wednesday. If been trying to use it a few times before I figure out all I want to do with it. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers
@@CookingWithCJ right on bro! Keep on with the vids I'm really digging them.
Much appreciated!
@@CookingWithCJ I know you're a busy man and it doesn't help im impatient, which leads to my question lol. Are you going to add any type of baffle to this grill? If so what type and from where? I've notice a lot of vids where they do this, but I'm just not sure what to get for best fit and heat.
Tommy Reed you know I hadn’t planned on it. Maybe I’ll do more research and add it to the list. I’ve been crazy at the office so I haven’t been able to film my mod video.
If you close your eyes he sounds exactly like Paul Walker lol😂
Happy father's day
Thank you!!
I own this grill and have since 2021 and I barely just put it together today. 😂 I also see why people pay for assembling
😂😂
I bought this and it's hard to keep it going and keep the temp up
Cody G12 I did a mods video on it. The mods really helped. This is probably the cheapest offset you can buy, but doing these mods will make it run better.
ruclips.net/video/F1QQnx25XdY/видео.html
@@CookingWithCJ just got done watching it actually haha thank you will try these out and let ya know! Subscribed!
Cody G12 much appreciated! I’m doing all my BBQ on my
Second channel Cj’s Que now, check that one out too. Thanks again!
OK ... THIS is what I like. Mod that thing! Anyone can sell a kidney and get a high dollar custom pit. Those are nice to see, but not many people have the room, budget, or understanding wife to get one.
Lol! Thanks Jim! Appreciate it brother!
Left or right....doesn’t matter....however this offset....ummmmm....well it should teach you many things. Take notes of what you like and dont like. Will be interesting to see what can be done.
Yessir. Just a starter. Wanted to make sure it was something I’d want to invest in later. Thanks for stopping by!
Why would we want a grill that has so many leaks?
why not? 🤣
26 inch tax and all 108.39 or so at Lowe's just got one can't say no
Great deal for sure!
I am sure most of us came to see how it is put together, so skipping that was sort of a disappointment.
