Meet Levi, Joni and Friends 200,000th Wheelchair Recipient!

Levi was born prematurely with cerebral palsy. He suffered two heart attacks in the first few days after his birth, and a significant lack of oxygen and blood flow caused brain atrophy and chronic kidney disease. Now seven years old, Levi cannot walk or talk. He needs constant care for all his needs. And as if the 24/7 demands of Levi’s caregiving wasn’t enough to overwhelm his parents, Levi’s mom Lilian is now battling breast cancer. His father lost his job and takes odd jobs to help provide for his family, but the combination of disability, disease and extreme poverty threatened to consume them altogether.
Everything changed for Levi and his family when our Wheels for the World team travelled to El Salvador. On that day, Levi became our 200,000th wheelchair recipient, and his life has since been transformed.
Joni and Friends Wheels for the World program provides custom-fitted wheelchairs to those in desperate need all over the world. More often than not, wheelchairs-especially pediatric wheelchairs-are unaffordable or unavailable in developing nations. Aggravated by poverty and isolation, the circumstances that families living with disability face are heartbreaking.
Wheels for the World is one way we are able to reach out and extend a hand of help and hope to families in need and fulfill our Biblical commission to “Go out quickly...and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame…so that my house will be full.” Luke 14:21-23
