I just cringe when I hear things like "I'm proud to be a Catholic". Or Christian. We've forgotten the proper words: grateful, thankful.
i think that this "cringe" emotion is also pride
Or "youre lucky you have a good wife or husband." Blessed is the right word.
Another huge form of pride that humans are so susceptible to is protecting our egos. Not being willing to admit when you're wrong or apologizing when you should. Or justifying things you do so you don't have to feel bad. These are very subtle and require a lot of self awareness and humility to overcome.

Really appreciate the example you gave of your own struggle with some pride at a talk! And it really prompted the question for me...is it always sinful to accept & enjoy compliments & praise? Not in the prideful sense of saying _"Yeah, I KNOW that! Of course! I'm the stuff!"_ which is obviously bad, but just saying _"Thanks for the praise! Appreciate it!"_ and taking some real enjoyment in the praise? Now the example you gave of sharing your testimony *IS* indeed sinful pride because any grace or spiritual benefit comes directly from God, *NOT* us, and I'm glad you are open enough to use your own fault as an example in this! I myself intuitively recognise we should give *all* glory to God in anything that lifts people closer to Him, directly or indirectly, and I thank God He gave me the grace to not be influenced by praise in this! But I still wonder whether or not one CAN still enjoy praise in *some other* cases perhaps - maybe for non-religious accomplishments or actions, such as sports or winning at games you play with friends? What do you think?

False humility is also pride.
The opposite of pride is humility.
The mother of all deadly sins is pride. It means when you have pride and you don't control it, your sin increases or multiplies as well.
The mother of all virtues is humility. It means if your humility grows, others virtues increase in you also.
Truth is humility. Humility is truth.
There are 2 kinds of pride:
1) sinful pride
2) good/holy pride
Almost all people have sinful pride including very holy and very spiritual person but in different degrees. Those who accused me of being prideful are correct in one side because I still have some sinful pride but incorrect in other side because I am not as prideful as they think. People who have no sinful pride are infants or children who have not yet reached the use of reason, people having full mental retardation and people who have already reached spiritual perfection.

Thank you for this video Brian... thanks for making a distinction between pride and false humility ( I am good for nothing ).. I learnt this the hard way.. the solution i found is what you mentioned in the video, when someone praises you, give the glory to God and automatically I realised that I am created and I dont own the good I do.. similarly when life is going too bad, praising God and asking for strength to come out of the situation has helped me..

And she knew that she was.
She states in her Magnificat [Luke 1:46-55]:

Thank you for this great video. Could you go further into a topic about pride and fraternal correction? Such as noticing someone else's sin (which you mentioned) and when it is not prideful to say something to that person if we should only be focusing on our own sins.

I am a teenage Chaldean Catholic (devout) and I am confused on weather or not to choose the Catholic Church or the Eastern Orthodox, I know that protestantism cant be true because they are divided and came 1500 years later. And I know I have problems with the oriental orthodox church with their miaphisite Christology. I have also considered the Assyrian Church of the East whom are mislabeled as "nestorians". Although I am leaning towards Catholicism this topic is confusing to me, do you recommend any books or writings I should look into? (Btw I have been watching your channel for 2 years now and you have made me defend my catholic faith)

Read about the early church fathers... I found it useful.. try to read about the major church councils and their reply to heretics,that will help as well..
Lastly, pray to mother Mary to intercede for your salvation.. she will lead you into the bosom of her Son and his only bride the catholic church..

The Pride of the Protestants, that will lead them to hell.. Just like Martin Luther, pride.. he thinks he is better than the Pope and Bishop, he doesn't need the church to guide them on the correct path thus creating his own man made churches and doctrines, and ultimately he is in hell now...

While it doesn't look good for Martin Luther we ought to leave the judging up to the Lord. Pray that the various splinterings from the branch would be healed and rejoin the one true Church.

The Catholic Church that we are part of today is the same Catholic Church that Jesus started 2000 years ago and there is an unbroken line of popes going back 2000 years to Peter himself. People authority goes back to the beginning as well, and you can even see it in church Councils before the Orthodox broke away.

Bryan, a Protestant friend, asked me, "Why do you believe in infant baptism ? He said it is not Biblical? And he said that John the Baptist's Baptism alone is Biblical. I told him that John's Baptism is only the symbolic of being humble and accepting God, it's not in a true sense then he said why then you make so many ready-made prayers even our father is an example or a symbolic prayer only. I said Catholic don't pray only ready prayers, all the spontaneous and intercessary prayers come from Catholic only.

He is an Anti-Catholic RUclipsr with an entire video series on why he believes Roman Catholicism is wrong. His arguments are convincing and he is leading many astray. So even if I don't believe in God because I am unsure if he exists. And I have done some of those sins yet I have changed since then and have been stick with a nassissist can I be forgiven.
Vanity and pride. The biggest sin of small town Minnesota women.
The best way to conquer our sinful pride (and our other vices) is to pray the Rosary everyday asking for the following graces:
1) The grace of perfect contrition for our pride
2) After we asked for the grace of perfect contrition for our pride, we must repent sincerely from our pride and beg God to forgive us.
3) Ask God for the grace to remove your pride completely and the grace to make you humble
4) Go to confession to confess your pride and other sins.
This is my formula for combatting my pride (and my other deadly sins). By God's grace, my sinful pride keeps decreasing while my humility keeps increasing. I am not yet freed or purified completely from sinful pride as there are still some sinful pride in my soul but what is important is I keep improving everyday in humility and am hoping I will reach the perfection of humility or I will become 100% humble sooner just like I have attained the perfection of the virtue of chastity or I am already 100% chaste in thought, word and deed or my soul has 0% lust and 100% chastity and this is permanent already in me. Praise be to God!
The first step to acquiring humility is to acknowledge our sinful pride. We all have sinful pride (except some people like infants et al) but in varying degrees. Even holy and spiritual people have some sinful pride. But they keep growing in humility and their pride keep decreasing because they keep acknowledging their sinful pride and keep repenting from it and keep confessing their pride.
Very prideful people are those who don't believe they are prideful and they have no sinful pride and they don't acknowledge their pride and they think they are humble. These people won't grow in humility. I keep growing in humility because I keep acknowledging my sinful pride and keep repenting from it. The pride of these people are under mortal sin pride.
There are 2 kinds of pride:
1) mortal sin pride = e.g. You don't acknowledge your pride and other sins and don't want to repent of them. This pride will send people to hell.
2) venial sin pride = e.g. A person does thing to glorify himself not God but later repent of his sinful pride. This pride won't damn us.
"I am full of pride". - said St. Maximilian Kolbe sorrowfully and repentantly.
Even if I am already 99% humble and only 1% proud, I will still repent from my 1% pride.

Hello brother, May I ask what is the right version of the Holy Bible for the catholic?
A Catholic Bible will have a total of 73 books, as opposed to non-Catholic bibles which usually have 66. The 7 books in question are Baruch, Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, and 1+2 Maccabees, so if you see these in a Bible, it’s likely Catholic. As for English translations, one that’s recommended is the RSVCE, and the one read during mass is typically a NAB.

If you haven’t considered it yet, I think a great way to help your Bible reading is with the “Bible in a Year” podcast with Fr Mike Schmitz, he’ll read a few chapters and explain some things as well. Go at your own pace, I myself am on my third year of Bible in one year, funnily enough!
We would recommend the Revised Standard Version Catholic edition (or version 2 if you dont like old English). Or the Douay Rheims (old English).

It's funny you should make a video on pride - I've been thinking a lot about pride these last few days.
Have you ever looked into semi-pelagianism? No Catholic can truly be pelagian but I've come to think that semi-pelagianism is the hidden heresy of our time.
Hear me out...
If you ask most Catholics how they intend to go to Heaven, they'll tell you they will ask for God's Grace whenever they're tempted to stay out of sin.
But this is a semi-pelagian attitude toward Grace: real Catholicism teaches that Grace is a partipation in God's LIFE - which is to say, Grace will do the work of sanctification for us - if only we let it!
It is only out of Pride that we take control of this process and make it about us.
It is OUR glory we seek rather than that of the Holy Spirit...
Am I making sense?
I understand there has been an ongoing debate ever since the Reformation over the nature of Grace and how it operates in our souls, the two main camps at odds being the Dominicans and the Jesuits.
Do you know anything about this debate and what became of it?
It's a really fascinating subject and it's of the utmost importance for our ultimate salvation: the Sacraments give us Grace but do we really know what Grace is and how it operates?
My personal theory is that if we really did, we would be MUCH holier.

Contrary to Protestant myth and anti-Catholicism, the Catholic Church doesn't teach that one is saved by works apart from preceding and enabling grace, but that faith and works are inseparable, as in James 1 and 2. This heresy of which Catholicism is often charged, was in fact condemned by the Catholic Church at the Second Council of Orange in 529 A.D. It is known as Pelagianism, the view that man could save himself by his own natural efforts, without the necessary supernatural grace from God. A more moderate view, Semi-Pelagianism, was likewise condemned. To continue to accuse the Catholic Church of this heresy suggests a manifest ignorance of the history of theology, as well as the clear Catholic teaching of the Council of Trent (1545-63), available for all to see. Yet the myth is strangely prevalent.😊😊

At bottom, the question is: is it MAN who saves Man with the help of God; or is it GOD who saves Man with the help of Man?
There is a fine line between the two and I'm not so sure we always get it right...
As a matter of fact, I would venture to say that the lines have been blurred in the Catechisms ever since Pope Clement VIII forbade further discussions between Jesuits and Dominicans on this matter.
Jesuits held that Grace is not in and of itself Efficacious (per se) but only Sufficient; whereas Dominicans held that it was in and of itself Efficacious and that it was due to Man's resistance that it did not complete the work of the Holy Spirit in our souls.
Reading most Catechisms today one gets the impression that Sufficient grace is rendered Efficacious only through our prayers by an added grace known as 'Actual' grace.
If Grace is in and of itself Efficacious then all we really need to do is humble ourselves and stop resisting - in other words, say 'Fiat' to the Lord, as Our Blessed Mother did.

Bryan, your video is so good! But you have one mistake. You said, "loving people more than ourselves." You are wrong. The right thing is and according to Jesus and the Bible, "We must love our neighbor as ourselves or equally not more than ourselves."
Jesus said: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends" John 15:13
Self sacrifice is loving others more than ourselves. Brian is absolutely right.
@@e7ukr No, Bryan is NOT absolutely right because Jesus said love your neighbor AS yourself not more than yourself. When you lay down your life for others, it does not mean you love them more than yourself. That bible passage means it is a higher/greater form of love that we give to our neighbor. It does not mean we love them more than ourselves.
@@e7ukr When you make sacrifice for others, it does not mean you love them more than yourself. It means you give a greater form of love to your neighbor. And the highest form of love that you render to your neighbor is when you lay down your life for him.

Is it prideful to want the Tridentine mass, and say that that is the best mass for most people?
I have never said Novus Ordo was invalid, but I did say it was very problematic, and indirectly led to clown masses.
Vatican 2 was mainly a pastoral council, which means the pastoral parts are not necessarily subject to infallibility. Novus Ordo is a matter of discipline, not of doctrine, so it can be changed. Is it heretical, dare I say prideful, to want the Tridentine mass back for everybody?
Here is my argument. I love the Pre-Tridentine mass. It’s like having a group of laity worship inside of a monastery. The reason I find spiritual fulfillment in tradition is because the more traditional the mass, the closer it is to Jesus’ time. You can more clearly see God. It’s like experiencing a type of beatific vision on Earth. Instead of being more holy to see more clearly the fullness of God, you experience mass more traditionally to see more clearly the fullness of God.
The mass is the life of Jesus, not a performance for the laity. I feel like me and you can agree on that.
Even though Pre-Tridentine mass was revised, it was a necessary revision to include the doctrines of the Council of Trent. I might not be in the right mind or the right authority to say that Novus Ordo is unnecessary, because it was enacted to encourage more laity involvement in the Church. But it didn’t work out the way it should have, nor did some parts of Vatican 2.
Here is another example. You look at the Council of Lateran V. It opposed erroneous teachings about the soul; reaffirmed the doctrine of indulgences; restated the relationship between popes and ecumenical councils. But on the eve of the Protestant Reformation, it failed to make an authentic and thoroughgoing reform of the Church, inadvertently helping Protestantism.
Infallibility is a hard subject for me to understand, but I feel like you agree with me.
Anything the Pope says on faith and doctrine is free from grave error. Any decision the Pope makes on discipline (form of Mass) is valid, but not necessarily infallible. The mass has been revised countless times throughout history. So it depends on what’s best for the Church. And I do have to trust the Magisterium on this.
But circling back, is it prideful to think all this, and to want it for the Church based on my arguments? Is it prideful if I want what’s best, or at least what I think is best, for the Church?

1. I believe the TLM needs to be preserved and celebrated, not restricted.
2. I adhere to Catholic dogma that The Magisterium is never wrong cos it is divinely instituted and mandated according to Matt 18:18 - whoever you bind / loosen, heaven will bind and loosen.
3. The bible doesn't differentiate a council being pastoral or otherwise. Everything the council = Magisterium decree is binding on all Catholics. So there is no such thing as a pastoral council.
4. Even if I grant your point of view on "pastoral council", V2 is not a pastoral council. For further discussion please refer to videos done by Michael Lofton on his channel Reason and Theology. The Pope who convened V2, Pope St John XXIII has said V2 is not a pastoral council. Hence its decisions are binding.
5. As long as V2 has approved the NO, its valid and licit. The Magisterium has the right to introduce, restrict, replace and change any Mass based on Matt 18:18. Thus the Church had totally replaced the Mass with the Passover liturgy instituted and 1st celebrated by Jesus in Aramaic. This is the same Mass with Passover liturgy which the Early Church Fathers celebrated for 400 years before being replaced by the Latin Mass which evolved into the TLM.
I personally find it disrespectful to replaced the Mass with Passover liturgy which had been celebrated by Jesus, the Apostles and Early Church Fathers for 400 years in Aramaic, Greek and Hebrew. This is the closest Mass to Jesus's time . The Latin Mass and TLM totally replaced all these. Why were there no protest when this happened?
Because Catholics obeyed Matt 18:18 and believed "whoever the Church binds, Heaven will bind." The Magisterium then decided. And is obeyed. No rad trads then
