  • Not quite a hundred , but several reasons why you really DONT want to get a pet owl or even an owl to fly . If you get an owl before watching this you really are foolish and to be honest selfish , if you watch this and decide against an owl ; good for you , if you decide to get one anyway i hope you do a lot more research …

In comparison to some other birds Owl are less intelligent but they're not as stupid i found as others say, mine recognises me, hoots for me or gets excited when seeing me, we chat, and i am slowly training mine to come to the glove AND HE WAS PARENT REARED. I wouldnt recommend taking on a parent reared unless youre an avid determined owl lover like myself as its taken me two years of solid endless training just to get him to come to me in the avairy, and thats to sit on the glove on a perch which hell do but if i move my glove he'll fly off, and hes only just started to take food off of me, ive achieved this without having to drop his weight to very low levels, ive had lots of time with him to get him to this stage but this isnt practical for most and most won't want to put the work in so i understand why professionals try to put others off especially newbies. Its lots of endless hard work for little returns or gains but it can be done and you can train a parent reared bird but its hell just to get to even the most little gains. You wont do it though if you haven't got time and loads and loads of patience. I saved mine from a horrible situation, it was either save him or hes dead, and my boy flew right near me staring at me being calm, the first time i met him. From that day he hooked me, everyone else he met he attacked or hissed at. (I agree Dont get an owl unless youre an avid owl lover with lots of time and patience, if youre like me then they are perfect, if youre mad.

Morning Dave probably the most honest video I've ever seen on looking after flying owls they are defiantly the stupidest stubbornest birds on the planet Keep up the good work

On one of the first days volunteering at a falconry centre I got to help work with a baby EEO, conditioning it to come to someone for food at a call. Still very fluffy and very cute, but with fully developed feet. Being low to the ground and seeing that thing thunder towards me with my back against a wall was one of the mercifully few times I've seriously thought "Oh God, what have I gotten myself into now?" moment in my falconry career so far. Obviously there was someone else there but the feeling's pretty primal.
I got more scars from barn owls more than anything else.
There are lots of reasons why I ended up with a kestrel as my personal bird. The costs are a really good point. My bird was free, but it's cost probably enough money to put a house deposit down over five years. As an adult the lifespan on rats is the worst thing. They're heartbreak machines.

As you said, owls mostly want to save calories during the day... And, not many of your friends are so keen with owls' eating habits! Not so "cute" watching them swallow anything they can get, all in one piece, alive, if wild prey... At least goshawks take gentlemanly bites (although, to be correct, their live prey don't find it very "gentlemanly"!)
Great video, and some comments really back it up with experienced voices.

FYI one of the most cranky birds we deal with (ex White bellied SeaEagles who are Barstuards) is the tiny BooBook ......thank god they are only tiny, but they have talons like hypodermics

I hope I can make something the same magnitude as that housing one day. Think that Spectacled owl is my sleep paralysis demon though. The elanus kite family has forward facing eyes so it has that cute factor and no one even realizes it, they think a hawk from the side and an owl if they only see them head on.

I might be coming into owning an owl in the nearish future, if I don't take him then he'll always have a home at the falconry centre he currently lives at. He's a victim of exactly this situation, he was got as a pet for 4 years before they got bored of him and dumped him at the centre. Because of that he won't fly to men and has some weird fears, and just isn't suitable for experiences. I'm one of the nutters who wants to own my own educational business with raptors, but that's a long way off. I won't take him unless I'm certain I can give him what he needs, he's living proof that getting an EEO just because they're cute or impressive never ends well. Any animal, especially birds, demand more and give less than people expected and it's always the animal that pays. I do absolutely dream of hunting an owl as a proper falconry bird at night, but an investment in night vision goggles and a whole new kind of training would be in order 😂 if humans were noctural owl falconry would be a different ballgame

If we only worked with them at dusk , as you say we would see them as more dynamic birds for sure !
Eeo In uk I would say most centres could have dozens of unwanted ones for sure if they took them all

@@falconry.davesharpenatureboy Theyre far too common for sure, people think they look cute and underestimate how powerful they are. In the winter we did a night owl experience, it was very popular and the owls felt entirely different, there was an energy shift!
