@@paulborash You need much more than a week in NZ!! Try a year. 6 mo. at the least! I was there two + years and still cry when i think about having to have left. (And I now live in southern Oregon near Ashland and Crater Lake)
Some folk take an ultralight umbrella for those downpours that never seem to stop .... Saves getting your jacket soaked through and also offers some shade from the sun. Even useful as a wind break in camp. I bet you could even use some duct tape and a stick to secure it to the top of a trekking pole so that your hands are free ?
@@paulborash Absolutely, really clear presentation of your setup. Since you mentioned in the comments that you might do a video on your pack, I wanna say I'd love to watch that too. I looked at the Hyperlite website and I'm curious whether you missed load-lifter straps on your pack at all, since the 3400 doesn't seem to have them.
nice video man! thanks so much for putting it together! I liked the little spoon/toothbrush pouch you made. I wish the products came with it. I'm thinking of maybe using a sunglasses pouch or something for the same thing (i'm not as skilled as you are with sewing :P )
Wow...you're hard core! So a T-shirt, fleece and rain jacket that wets out in a downpour is all you had along for your upper body? What was your back up plan for if you got soaked and hypothermic...put up your tent, strip down, put on your sleeping pants and socks and crawl into your quilt shirtless? Honestly not trying to be facetious at all, I'm seriously curious. What was it like in northern Washington? That can get pretty cold, wet and gnarley (somewhat) like the Sierra Mts too. I don't think I would be comfortable with that spare of a "closet," but I'm trying to learn and stretch my comfort zone whilst staying safe. The older I get, the less I want to carry! So can you elaborate? Much obliged!
I mentioned in the video that I didnt include every piece of gear I carried on the entire trail, as what I included was what my kit looked like for most of the trail. I got rained and snowed on more in the desert than I did in WA, and just had the kit shown and was quite fine. Just had to plan things out more. Got maybe a little wet and cold at times, but never felt unsafe. In Leavenworth, I picked up an emergency poncho. Though it was fragile, it kept much more dry.
@@paulborash Very good! BTW, when you sent home your warmer gear from the Sierra did you have the option of having someone send that back to you if needed or would you have had to buy them again?
Thanks for this Irish, getting ready to head out myself. Last minute as im downsizing and realizing my osprey atmos 50 is super overkill. Looking at that HMG 3400 as soon as my rei dividend comes in
Hi Irish, thanks for the great review. Just wondering if you had any thoughts regarding getting the 2400 over the 3400. Did you find it handy to have the 3400 for the longer carries over the Sierras etc? Thanks in advance :)
Hello scott, thank you for the comment. Watermelons are of the most technical fruit, requiring tactical planning if you want to take on packing them on trail. I would recommend de-shelling, dicing, and diversifying load to have the highest likelyhood for success. ;)
I've completed the PCT in 1985 and 2014. I always made it a rule to carry no more than two with you at a time. Place under each arm and use your hiking sticks according.
Thank you for sharing. I missed the name of the backpack, sorry. Could someone tell? Thank you. I'd love to get details on the tooth brushing powder you've made!
But the real question is: How do running shorts with a lining work with underwear on a thruhike? Or was the lining sacrificed in order to use underwear? Or did you just forsake underwear for the consistent support of an ever increasingly nasty shorts liner? Hmmm 🤔
@@paulborash ah that makes more sense. So puffy no Melly up until the Sierra. Added Melly post Sierra. Makes total sense. Thanks again man it's been great following your journey!
I have The One and I'm 1,70 meters (no idea how much that is in feet and inches but definitely shorter than you) and on my x lite sleeping pad the footbox of my quilt sometimes got wet when it was raining (or from heavy condensation) and windy bc it pushed the tent down on my quilt. Maybe it would be better when using a z lite or similar thin foam pad because you'd be closer to the floor of the tent and not 2 inches high on an inflatable pad. It's a great tent, I'm just not sure if it'd be as good for someone significantly taller than me!
Why carry scissors when you had that sweet custom knife? That seems like overkill. Also I would have went with a lighter fleece like a Kuiu Peloton under six ounces and combine it with a lightweight down that combioned would be about the same weight as the Melly. Or better yet ditch the rain jacket and get a Six Moon Designs carbon fiber umbrella and handsfree kit for the same weight and then just get a 2-4 ounce wind jacket to combine with the above combo. The umbrella would work in all but the highest winds and doubles as a sun shade in the desert.
The scissors offered lots of value for me, for precision cutting I found it to be much better than the knife. I would almost rather carry the scissors over the knife. I have owned the melanzana for quite awhile, and though the KUIU may be lighter, the melly is what I had. Great thoughts though! Thanks for the input.
That blue piece is a coupler to connect the sawyer to a bottle on the front end, so you can backflush! I chose to use this instead of carrying the backflushing syringe as this if much less bulky.
It's actually the 3400, I loved it. Had everything I wanted, nothing i didn't need. For most of the trail, I was most likely using under 40L, and the 2400 would have absolutely worked.

Super helpful info! Thanks a million I’ll for sure be looping back to this vid as I collect the last odds and ends for my first thru hike attempt this late summer/early fall!
I had a puffy, for the first 1000 miles, and swapped it out for my fleece in Bridgeport. I ended up keeping the fleece for the rest of the trail. I personally thought the fleece was absolutely a superior option for my hiking style.
Weren't you cold? No rain pants, or hiking pants; just leggings and shorts. Top was just a Long Sleeve, a Sweater, and a Light rain jacket. It seems like hiking in cold, rainy and windy weather may have been super rough for you.
Thanks for the comment. I found that my system worked quite well. I felt mostly comfortable given bad weather. At the point I was at in the trail in WA when the weather was bad, I was nearly completed with the thru hike. If I was going to be on trail for a more substantial amount of time in cold weather I would have likely added layers. Did not feel ill prepared though.

Good thing to know for extra bad pain, try taking Ibuprofin (Advil) and Naproxin Sodium (Aleve) at the same time.
Taking 2 NSAIDs at the same time is not a good idea. Take acetaminophen (1gm) w/ ibuprofen (600mg) for moderate pain not controlled w/ ibuprofen.
Very cool. Thank you for creating this. What shoulder pouch did you use for your sunglasses?
