Mate, you can literally walk into any food place and ask wear the toilets are, you don't have to pay, and smoking inside is illegal, so people have to smoke outside and a lot of people smoke, it's completely legal to smoke anywhere other than in a public building, shops close early on weekends.
Depends on the establishment. Some Burger King branches have a pay to use toilets, and it's bad etiquette to use a non-corporate restaurant's toilet without being a customer (these are not public toilets, but private toilets). Public toilets are toilets at places funded by the public, and at least half of them in the UK are pay-to-use. Shops traditionally close early only on Sunday due to Sunday trading laws, but many shops in London stay open until 8-10pm.
In central London it is indeed almost impossible to find a public restroom in a shop ...to pay is usually the only option...and most coffee shops in small towns close early, bigger towns usually 8
Sunny Jim ngl , I’ve been living in England for 20 years and I thought Scotland was just like England until a few weeks ago. But it’s beautiful there. I wish I went there before the pandemic.
Double culture shock - some of the UK crossing buttons do nothing at all! They just change when the lights would have let you cross anyway, but because we are used to the other type of crossing we believe we are in control. You learn to go in the cafes. Yeah - smokers... Not illegal outside, thankfully it’s less popular than it was. After 6pm you go to Pubs, especially up north (but you figured this one) I haven’t signed in years - it’s all contactless now. Beep!
It is legal to smoke on the street in the UK. It's illegal to smoke in someone's workplace (so that would include pubs and cafes). Just ten years ago, you would have a couple of drinks in a pub and come out with all your clothes smelling of tobacco.
Hearing about you talking about traffic lights really amused me I wonder if you got even more excited when u walked along a zebra crossing because then they have to stop😂😂
Just so you know it's not illegal to smoke on the street, it is, however, illegal to smoke inside, that's why you would have seen a lot of smokers outside
I was born in UK, but after going to my paternal country of Malaysia and other Asian countries, I find half these things annoying too! The traffic light thing is definitely first class though, I'd be scared to cross the road in Malaysia or in cities in China!
All these things actually aren't happening only in the UK but the whole Europe I think.I live in a little country in Europe and we do/have the same things in here.

Chris I’ve also been in the UK for 18 years (I’m 18 years old😂I was born here) not once did I ever pay for the toilet either, is that even a thing here because it’s my first time hearing of it
Great video Billy, as an English person it is interesting to learn about the differences between our countries :) I hope to be able to visit Korea one day!
I remember getting on the school bus in the 80s, Billy, and members of the public could use it and they would frequently get on and smoke. It would have been unthinkable for anyone to complain. But now my son is the same age I was then and he’s so shocked that adults were smoking on our school bus. I think attitudes towards smoking have changed quite rapidly in UK and hopefully we will catch up with other countries soon ❤️
I’m from the UK and never realised our opening times were so strange. I like that we close shops early. It is good for workers to rest, allows us all to have more balanced lives and prevents over commercialisation of our culture (not easy). If you go to Spain, Italy or France the shop opening hours are very different again. They close for long periods in the daytime for ‘lunch’ or siesta, then open again in the evening when it is cooler. I love your hybrid accent- I can definitely hear the British Received Pronunciation
I'm currently living in South Korea and people work like crazy; and COVID restrictions notwithstanding, most places like cafes and bars/clubs/convenience stores are open either 24 hours, or if not incredibly late (like 4/5am). It's pretty cool but also yeah, work is very much prioritized over life here.
Absolutely agree with you. When I was in England, I was quite like “wow, that’s sick” about using pin numbers for paying with credit card especially contactless things!
When I was a tourist in London in the 1970’s I paid to use the toilet too. In Sydney there are some old fashioned toilets that you had to pay for too. Don’t know if they still exist now.
OMG this is sooo weird because of ur british accent and i’m a asian british but ur korean and the british accent just slapped me in the face LOL its my first time on ur channel too🤗
It is not illegal to smoke in the street in the UK, nor are many toilet ‘pay to use’ . Most shops close at 5 or 6pm so there is little custom for coffee bars or cafe’s, you will find restaurants, fast food outlets, pubs and bars open until very late though.
Not illegal to smoke on the street but it is illegal to smoke in public places such as pubs, restaurants etc. Before people were able to smoke in such places but that was banned in 2007. So only your own house or on the road in the UK are the only places one can smoke.
I'll give you a tip. The control button on pedestrian crossings in the UK are just cosmetic. They make you think you're in control but you're not. The lights go through a natural cycle regardless of who presses the button.
The security concerns that you raise about using debit cards in Korea are why the 'chip and pin' system was introduced in the UK. But now we also have contactless debit card use, which I think is the least secure system of all!
I thought the pedestrian buttons controlled traffic when I was a kid too, but that's not totally the case. A busy intersection with the pedestrian button might have a set sequence and timing for when there is/isn't a pedestrian. So like, if traffic is really busy in one direction they will have a green light for longer, and once a pedestrian comes it changes to a different sequence so the light might change sooner. Usually, though, pressing the button doesn't actually change anything I don't honestly understand why it's there for most intersections.
We have that kind of buttons for changing traffic lights in Korea as well. It's widely used in elementary school zones and some apartment complexes, and probably that's why you don't know about it.
I worked in a university and had some people from Korea give me their cards, they explained why because it’s a normal thing to do. I think it’s because it’s easy to copy a card by swiping it too, that’s one of the reasons the pin helped.
This was really enjoyable to watch, the traffic lights were a culture shock for me too when I first moved here that gave me a nostalgic lol. Great content dude :)
since the government made it illegal to smoke in pubs, 19 pubs a week close in the UK. businesses are loosing many hours because of staff having to go outside to smoke too. so many Britons now choose to stay in rather than go out for the evening and be forced outside to smoke.
But the NHS will have fewer cancer patients to treat and we're also saving a fortune on washing powder for stinking clothes. As a smoker you're outnumbered 7 to 1. As a non smoker , I'd prefer to drink in a pub that doesn't have a fog of unpleasant carcinogens. Staff don't have to smoke, they're there to work excepting authorised breaks that all are entitled to - plenty of non-smokers that can be employed if that's too difficult for them. They're also less likely to be off sick, especially if you protect them passive smoking in their workplace.
Only just discovering your channel. I love it. So interesting that you were in Preston. Would love to hear more about this. I was at the uni in preston before switching to Lancaster. Binge watching all your content 😁👍
Credit cards used to be like that (swipe and sign) until debit cards became popular. Soon after most people began using debit cards, we adopted the 'chip and pin' payment process for security. Now though most debit cards are becoming contactless (tap to pay - up to £30) which is more convenient but less secure.
In olden times. People had to pay for the toilet the sum of 1p. Ever since, we've had a saying: 'going to spend a penny.' As polite way of excusing oneself to use loo. Reintroducing paid for toilets once again (they always used to be feee) is a swirly new development again. Interesting how you noted the amount of smokers; it is actually a tiny fraction of what it used to be.
Usually paying for toilets are in tourist areas, usually to keep them not too busy or making sure they’re clean. There are a lot of more free ones, it’s sort of rare to see pay for ones a lot.
All the public loos used to be free but they are slowly beginning to either be closed down or cost money depending on where you are in the UK but yeh, i just go when I'm in a cafe or hold it in until I can go to one for free (like at home)
This is Northern Europe everything is chilly here...even some of the people...lol. Though ironically up north people tend to be friendlier, down south in the big cities people are busy and usually have to be cold.
It is not illegal to smoke outside anywhere walking or sitting . We wouldn’t pay for the loo unless you could not wait ,normally go in a shop or ask in cafe. Yes that’s a contactless debt card but that only works for sales under thirty pounds
Yes, the early closing of places like Costa and Caffe Nero is ridiculous; indeed, back in the 60s, coffee places stayed open really late. Preston? Did you ever get to Southport?
Ah, I love being a Brit. Though, I never noticed these things much, since I'm used to it. lol It's interesting hearing the perspective of someone who is from another country and has had to adapt. I remember when I used to go to the pub with my family and it smelt of smoke all the time, but it's so different now that people aren't allowed to smoke in there. I feel bad for babies and small children who are breathing in all the second hand smoke.
In the USA, the cashier barely pays attention to the payment process. It is rare to have them look at the card. I frequently use my mom's card when shopping for her without any questions.
FYI: The buttons don't change the lights, they just extend the time before they change back. This gives the pedestrian more time to cross the street. At least that's how they work in the United States.
Paying for toilets is not common, although you often find that free toilets are terrible quality, probably because people don't want to pay to vandalise somewhere, so it makes sense. I haven't seen many paid toilets outside of London though, I would imagine there are some at busy train stations but I don't take the train much so I wouldn't know
Many people (even the ones that were born here) don't realise how far north the UK is. London is about the same latitude North as Santa Cruz is South! Bigger differences in day/night cycles in the seasons the further towards the poles you get. We're not a very cold country because 1, we're an island, and 2, we have the Atlantic Gulf Stream. Gives us relatively warm weather. It could tone it down a bit in the Summer imo 🥵
Totally agree on the change thing for loos, I never carry change and it's always some awkward combination of different coins :/ Shops also shut way too early except for in the larger cities...things are slowly improving but still can be a pain at times...
Update Debit cards, you can just touch now...no pin number needed I didn't even think twice about our Coffee shops, until about 4 years ago when I was out with a friend, it was around 9pm, and we couldn't find a Coffee, or Tea Shop open...I think it's because we put a lot of emphasis on Alcohol...Wine Bars, Pubs and Clubs Yep we need to experiment more with late closing Coffee Shops!
It’s not illegal to smoke on the street but I is illegal to smoke in a public building like a pub or restaurant. That’s partly why so many people smoke outside because they can’t do it indoors unless they are in their own homes.
Ive never paid for the toilet in the uk- is it a London thing? If you go to a cafe or restaurant they tend to allow you to use the toilet for free. Sometimes you have to buy something but
Lol the problem with inserting the PIN number while paying is that all the stores can get your PIN on the camera and , I am not sure but their card machine could also have it memorised? Maybe I feel paranoid lol but I don’t trust it. So i cover my fingers with another hand when inserting my PIN

Light - Winter, It's light at 8 a.m. and is dark by 4 p.m. Summer it's light at 4 a.m. and dark by 10 p.m.
Very interesting video 😊
Many people (even the ones that were born here) don't realise how far north the UK is. London is about the same latitude North as Santa Cruz is South! Bigger differences in day/night cycles in the seasons the further towards the poles you get. We're not a very cold country because 1, we're an island, and 2, we have the Atlantic Gulf Stream. Gives us relatively warm weather. It could tone it down a bit in the Summer imo 🥵
Totally agree on the change thing for loos, I never carry change and it's always some awkward combination of different coins :/
Shops also shut way too early except for in the larger cities...things are slowly improving but still can be a pain at times...
Update
Debit cards, you can just touch now...no pin number needed
I didn't even think twice about our Coffee shops, until about 4 years ago when I was out with a friend, it was around 9pm, and we couldn't find a Coffee, or Tea Shop open...I think it's because we put a lot of emphasis on Alcohol...Wine Bars, Pubs and Clubs
Yep we need to experiment more with late closing Coffee Shops!
That first one I don’t understand I live in the US and that never happend to me
It’s not illegal to smoke on the street but I is illegal to smoke in a public building like a pub or restaurant. That’s partly why so many people smoke outside because they can’t do it indoors unless they are in their own homes.
Ive never paid for the toilet in the uk- is it a London thing? If you go to a cafe or restaurant they tend to allow you to use the toilet for free. Sometimes you have to buy something but
i think its only like the major city’s where some places charge for using toilets, most of the time in the rest of england the toilets are free
Lol the problem with inserting the PIN number while paying is that all the stores can get your PIN on the camera and , I am not sure but their card machine could also have it memorised?
Maybe I feel paranoid lol but I don’t trust it.
So i cover my fingers with another hand when inserting my PIN
The Toilets in the train stations are now free I believe
I’m from the UK, and I’ve never payed for the toilet, is that even a thing here because it’s my first time hearing of it.
