For the kids at the back who didnt quite catch it "we learn who we are by copying others. who here hasnt imitated their childhood hero in the playground, their mom, or father?" "imitating somebody can reveal something unique. every time i fail to become more like my father, i become more like myself. every time i fail to become bruce lee, i become more authentically me" that's basically just it. i just wish he had expounded more on self discovery after failure of imitation. it would have been much clearer that way. but nonetheless i think this was a talk that was executed perfectly
Here's the literal translation of the Mandarin that he speaks: "We can learn about different cultures through different languages. Apart from learning the unique tonalities and accents, more importantly we should also take note of the unique hand movements, habits and actions."

I completely agree with the authors. When you start imitating someone, you open up new possibilities in yourself. It's not about gender, race or nationality, the fact is that a person understands who he really is and finds his uniqueness.
It's about perspective and imitation and expectations. Most people see either of those individuals and they have a notion of what they expect. So as he changes voice and form he's becoming something different from what you just saw. And he's learning through trying to emulate the people around him and in doing so the parts that he doesn't emulate right...well those are the parts that are unique to him.
Imitation does provide insights about yourself. It places you at the helm. Only being at the helm can you understand that sort of perspective. Perspective is unique and what is unique is authentic. You experience it from level one and any experience starting at the very seed is valuable. Those kinds of experiences have been through it all. Great talk. The manner of the presentation only served to amplify this message. Well done.
My understanding of it was that in order to truly understand yourself, you need to try to be like others because this will help you understand who you really are
Very creative and thought provoking. Who are we? The summation of all that we are, see and imitate. A few ingredients can become a thousand dishes or several dozen letters can become an infinite number of words. We are all unique and at the same time, we are all the same.
Russell Peters is so wrong when he said, "Indians and Chinese can't work together." Say that to Hetain Patel and Yuyu Rau. Say that to Tang Xuanxang and Harshavardhana. Say that to Subrahmanyam Chandrashekhar, Tsung Dao Lee and Chen Ning Yang. I guess ... there is much cultural ground to be covered. But if a third of humanity can get their act together, there will be much hope for the remainder. Great TED talk! Thank you.
I like this really well, it actually shows how people learn and recognize things. By imitating we learn to become close to what we are imitating. Be it parents siblings and fictional heroes. Also it told us that you could learn the language but when you don't understand the culture, tone of voice for male or female or how either gender phrase those words to differentiate from masculine or feminine, then you are missing out on the aspect of learning that said language.
I really like this, cause i literally relate to him. I come up to self realization that every time you failed on what you want to become is the more you realize who you really are. And acceptance is the key to self realization.
Some people are asking what his message here is. What he is trying to do is change perceptions. Not just your perception but his own as well. The more you understand about who people are the more you know who you are.
Love this! Went to Hetains exhibition in Manchester the other day to see 'The Jump' and 'Don't Look at The Finger'. Genius. Love Hetains unique perspective and sense of humour.
This was a very different experience for me and I LOVED IT! Such originality. Will Mr. Patel and the absolutely lovely young woman being doing more of this type of thing? Would love to see more. Thank you.
I think the video covered the topic of identity very well. No matter how much we want to be ourselves, first we need to imitate someone. In this way, everyone will find themselves and the need to imitate will disappear.
I really like the way they presented their performance, it was quite sophisticated and profound. I completely agree that through imitating others people discover their true identity.
Patel makes his point very creatively. He shows us that his father was his most important influence and how his attempts to copy his heroes like Bruce Lee and Spiderman were a big waste of time.
people who feel the same as the author, Surely have introspective skills. People like this, can quickly recognize other people. The difference of themselves from the others as also they can recognize others to one another. They can also be in other people's shoes easily.
Indeed, everything is true! It's about perspective and imitation and expectations. This view of the imitation of behavior and habits of people seems to be on the surface, but it's hard to come to it yourself. Plus, such an approach to personal identity can help to find out and track the formation of a person's character.
I don't think it sucks, in fact I think in the right context it would have the power to be very thought-provoking. What people here in the comments forget, is that people actually in the TED audience are listening to lecture after lecture on very heavy topics, so the break of more light-hearted performances are very welcome. The talk isn't meant to be a heavy, hard-hitting one - it brings a message across humourously with just enough of a kernel of truth in the middle to make you think.
I think the video is full of new ideas and views, it also concerns a philosophical point of view. F.e imitating somebody can reveal something unique.I won't say that I agree with everything, but the ideas about the lives of these people reveal the depth of their thoughts, which makes their sayings thought-provoking.
Identities, complexes, complexities arising from identitities, and our resistance to accept them. How the human race will empower itself, once these are better understood.
I think this is a form of inspiring conceptual art. Through reflecting conditioned programming memes on our antiquated ways of westernized identity ???...Very good teaching through a form of art !!! LOVE THIS STUFF !!!

After many days an entertaining, at the same time, an intelligent talk - obviously it's not for everyone to understand or appreciate this

Wonderful. Totally hooked throughout the 9 minutes.
My understanding of it was that in order to truly understand yourself, you need to try to be like others because this will help you understand who you really are
This was one of the best TED Talks I've watched... Very well performed and a powerful message.
Anyone here after BCVS class 😂
Very creative and thought provoking. Who are we? The summation of all that we are, see and imitate. A few ingredients can become a thousand dishes or several dozen letters can become an infinite number of words. We are all unique and at the same time, we are all the same.
This is the first TED video that I LOVE.
Russell Peters is so wrong when he said, "Indians and Chinese can't work together."

When you say you literally relate to him, are you saying you are a distant cousin?
How can anyone downvote this? This talk is brilliant!
Thank you for such a wonderful performance! It was nice to see how you presented your idea. Only when we fail to imitate someone, we become ourselves.
This awakens people's awareness about others who don't fit into their molds.
If more people were aware, we would all have fewer problems
I'm so glad there are people like you on the internet. :)
superbly rehearsed & choreographed
This is probably my favourite TED talk of all time...:) there really are SO many good ones though. Be like water, my friends.
Some people are asking what his message here is. What he is trying to do is change perceptions. Not just your perception but his own as well. The more you understand about who people are the more you know who you are.

Brilliant way to convey something
Very clever! Finally a TED talk worth listening to.
The Bruce Lee impression is hilarious
I think the video covered the topic of identity very well. No matter how much we want to be ourselves, first we need to imitate someone. In this way, everyone will find themselves and the need to imitate will disappear.
I cannot but agree that we always try to copy behaviour of our role models, but we will always fail to be someone else. That is what makes us unique.
Very Entertaining, completely hooked throughout the talk.
I really like the way they presented their performance, it was quite sophisticated and profound. I completely agree that through imitating others people discover their true identity.
Good job. Very entertaining.
This was the BEST TED talk Ive seen so far. I almost didnt watch it because it wasnt in English. Fabuloso!
A comedian with a sense of humor I'm sure we can all say we're not quite used to - but done very well in the end. Thank you.
Beautiful piece if work
Wonderful! Entertaining and humorous yet informative and profound!
You have to have had grown up in a multicultural environment to be able to relate to this.
A persons identity comes from how much they love others. The more you love the more you become. Love is self giving the opposite of loving is using.
Seeking a smile on your face and a touch of self-reflection then these 9 minutes will do the trick!
so much worth than 9 min! i kept thinking about this talk and authenticity rest of the day. :)
this is genius, it makes people thinking.
now those two are just amazing :)
too good. mind blasting. loved it. ate it. digested it. too good.
me too, yum
I love love love love this.
Patel makes his point very creatively. He shows us that his father was his most important influence and how his attempts to copy his heroes like Bruce Lee and Spiderman were a big waste of time.
So every time I failed to become a Super Saiyan as a kid, the power level for being myself got higher?
profound, funny and genius is Hetain Patel
people who feel the same as the author, Surely have introspective skills. People like this, can quickly recognize other people. The difference of themselves from the others as also they can recognize others to one another. They can also be in other people's shoes easily.
I think the most important thing is to realize who we are ,or ,what we are.
This is incredible.
Good point they have, but what makes this video so apealing is their creativity and uniqueness to transmit the main idea!
Great video. Thank you.
one of my favourite quotes of all time and my favourite bruce lee quote whoop whoop
That was very entertaining! Good to see a nice "E" from "TED"!
Nearly bailed on this in the first few minutes but glad I stuck with it. A pretty decent talk in the end!

So. Awesome.
Whoever we are, it sure as hell isn't the ego.
Designed in a way (evolution). Our parents chose characteristics in each other that are passed on to us.
Nailed the Bruce Lee impression.
too good!
This is a great showing !
THis guy is amazing!
This was an excellent talk
Omg that is the best mimicking act I have ever seen
I was almost put to tears, though I think I'm just a tad emo right now.

Brilliant piece and a very creative delivery vehicle to an idea, that my guess went over the heads of some, hence the many dislikes.
I want more!
Great point made hetain Patel !
That was great!
Very unusual and really took my attention. Well done. Thanks!
Great talk!
if you understand Mandarin chinese, i think you would find him so hilarious.
That was a very interesting and entertaining talk. I don't see what all the controversy is.
Amazing!
i was straight up hooked
the intro is the best part of the video... it's so fucking magnificent.
I freakin love their humor.
Damn right, I was wondering what was up with it until I watched the rest of the video.
Excellent work

Amazing presentation, really!!
Identities, complexes, complexities arising from identitities, and our resistance to accept them. How the human race will empower itself, once these are better understood.
I think "shit" is the operative word here. You nailed it!
I loved it. Thank you.
The day I find art deep I'll give away living I think.
A very unique Ted Talk... i've never seen one so choreographed before lol
this was awesome!!
I think this is a form of inspiring conceptual art. Through reflecting conditioned programming memes on our antiquated ways of westernized identity ???...Very good teaching through a form of art !!! LOVE THIS STUFF !!!
This is great.
I dont think the message got across to most of your subs, by the looks of their comments that is. This was perfect. ;0))
The fact that I understand both languages is a bit weird
Brilliant!
I´ve learnt this by SPIDER-MAN! Great! Remembers me about the pretty nigerian woman talking about her north-american roomate and her misconceptions...
