This 50mm got me me into macro photography, and I have the 90mm G Macro now as well. The 90 definitely has faster auto focusing and tracks subjects better. But the 50mm is right up there in sharpness, and it's much easier to carry around with its smaller size & weight.
I've been using this lens for some time. Initially had some issues as it hunts. But learnt that setting the approximate distance using the side button helps. Also got more comfortable with manual adjustment. Great lens. Fun.
I just received this lens and I am very excited by its resolving power and versatility. Not only do I now have a very sharp lens with extremely precise focusing at a normal focal length, but also true macro capability. The sharpness of the lens reveals the high resolution of my A7 RII; and when this lens is used on my A7 RII in APS-C mode (18 mp), or an APS-C camera (24 mp), I also have an effective focal length of 75 mm, so I can get usable macro shots at a more comfortable distance away.
Just ordered this thanks to your review. I've watched a few of your videos today. I also have the Tamron 28-200mm and love it. I like your honest view points also - especially about camera snobs 😂. Keep it up. Lee
I just love the joy with which you review lenses. And it is also infused in the visuals that you create with the lens. I always wanted to try out this lens. I too have the 90 and a collection of vintage macros in the 50-55 realm. Now I feel that this could be a good addition. Meanwhile many thanks for the joy of seeing!
Thank you for this! I'm really trying to see how the wider mm macros like 24mm, the 50mm and 90mm compare in macro lenses. This review is helping me figure that out. If you can do a macro lens comparison with different mm, that would be awesome! Especially concerning video. 😊
Thank you so much for the review!!! I’ve been on the hunt for a low cost macro lens for product photography and I think I’ve found it! Your review just sealed the deal.
This lens is for sure a must have and more versatile than the 90mm for me it's a better buy as i already have the 35mm and 135mm prime lenses i really enjoy macro it's super fun and this little gem should be as good as the old minolta AF 50mm f2.8 macro maybe the same design!
@@PavSZ For sure! A must have for everyone that enjoy macro and quite handy for everyday photography! What a great review, thank you!! Quick question: I own the 90mm macro on my a7iii and LOVE it. always been a macro shooter. My girlfriend just started to shoot apsc 6400 a little more on a budget and loved my 90mm 😂 she wants to get a macro lens too, but she‘s doesn‘t want to get the pricier 105mm sigma or whatever. So could this be an apsc solution too in your opinion..? :)

Great choice - it is versatile enough for standard and macro photography/video. You will have no issues filming with it if you don't auto focus from infinity to macro (it will struggle doing that) or simply stick it in manual
Nice video!! I have a question, could you pls suggest me a lens for my inflight reviews videos that I do? The things that I particularly shoot are seats, amenities, food, cabin, overall ambience and loo review, pretty much as other inflight reviewers. I’m struggling to decide on a lens which works out well and can be used for close objects videos with focus and not blurring. Also, the light is a primary aspect as night flights have generally low light in the cabin and day flights hv plenty of light pouring through the windows.. just wanted to know which lens are recommended for these kind of videos. Some people suggested Song 10-18mm wide angle, not sure if this can focus on close objects enough and produce sharp videos; and some suggested for Sony 50mm macro, again not sure if this is ok for general cabin video and if it can handle low light. FYI, I use Sony a6400. Thanks!
Hey Pav, big fan of your channel and it would be great to sit down and have a beer sometime.🍻 I have one question about this lens. I've been using it for a long time at work on Sony cameras, but privately I have a Lumix S5, so I thought I'd ask you which Lumix lens would you recommend that is closest to this one? That he can get so close to the product like that.. and when he needs it, he can give decent bokeh... Cheers 🤘
Great review. If you don't have any macro lenses now, will you buy 50mm or 90mm as the first one for your work? I appreciate for your sharing your idea.

it is good for focus stacking and it does suffer from some focus breathing - not really a big problem if you stack and process the photos in photoshop anyway
