  • I went looking for the source of a lot of broken bits of pottery and glass, assuming it would be an old dump site disturbed by bottle diggers. I found it, and had fun seeing what things I could find.

      to be more specific they're from the era of fashionable waxed mustaches and, should the long whiskers get in the tea, the wax would melt and ruin the Look. i collect mustache cups because they're just so very victorian and silly; i love them. that one wasn't very rare or fancy thankfully lol

Hardware cloth isn't expensive and you can make your own sieve and choose the size of the holes in the hardware cloth. Never could figure out why some man named metal mesh hardware CLOTH? There is a lot of that going on in this world, like red bellied woodpecker and his head is red, not his belly.

    Ahhhhh! I just love dump sites like this! Such an assortment of this and that. I too would skim the otherwise invisible tiny things from the surface after a rain- and would find myself always wishing on a good storm! Where I am now, I have yet to find an old dump- or any dump of size. The old ones are on the properties of individual houses, so... BUT, my 2 larking locations have been lots of fun, tidal- so always changing and revealing small treats. Speaking of which, that small round hollow thing may just be a little compact. I've found several in the past- a few w/ intact mirrors. You may want to carefully, gently open it up and see! Thank you for your time and care sharing your larking adventures. They're always a treat, and I'm always more relaxed and less stressed after viewing. Cheers from Maine!

      Yes, I especially like them if I'm the first mudlarker on the scene 🙂 Had such a fun time at the bigger, river carved cliff face recently after Storm Francis passed... found so many things, (and accidentally left a pile of things, but not a problem... there's plenty more to be found).
      I'm going to try some WD40 to see if I can ease up the hinge on the little brass box, it probably has a clip seal too, but will need a bit of cleaning before I know who best to try and open it. I'd like to restore it if I can, just as practice for other things. 🙂

    The stinging nettle only
    Will still be found to stand:
    The numberless, the lonely,
    The thronger of the land,
    The leaf that hurts the hand.
    That thrives, come sun, come showers;
    Blow east, blow west, it springs;
    It peoples towns, and towers
    Above the courts of Kings,
    And touch it and it stings.

    A beautiful day for a walk along the river. Love the sound of the water and the bridges. The piece of pottery that you mentioned maybe it was for separating eggs is part of a mustache cup. To keep the big bushy mustache out of the cup of tea. Some were on a manly size mug shape and others on fancier tea cups.
    The too large for a top item looks like part of a toilet float valve.

    The little ceramic disks look like the ends of sewing bobbin cotton reel holders. Some were quite fancy but most just plain.

      Thanks MaryAnne, that's a strong possibility; they were cotton mills up in that valley. 🙂

    Your little round metal container reminds me of a rouge container my aunt had, who was born in the early 1900s.

    Oh wow Tom, what a beautiful area to mudlark in 👍
    I especially loved the poison bottle and the 2 Amber pill bottles. I've recently found an area near my home which I think was an old dump and just yesterday I found my very first amber poison bottle with NOT TO BE TAKEN - screw top and then my partner found a bit smaller and older one also amber. I was so excited 😊
    Between you, The Johnson's and Kit and the Caboodlers, you have all inspired me to go out more and search for treasures❤ 😊 so thank you.
    And thanks for sharing your video 😊😊😊❤❤❤
