Point #3 was in point for me! Knowing where to focus your efforts in getting the cybersecurity game is so important! It saves time for those reinventing themselves and anxiety about which direction to go! Thank you so much for this wisdom!
I’m active duty military, my integrity will never be in question. I swear I didn’t understand any of these concepts and career pivot until I found Boyd’s channel. Thanks 🙏🏾 again, sir.
Thank you Boyd, my favorite key was 3, understand the different niches in cyber security. That's where I am at the moment. I am trying to focus on one niche
All the information was excellent, but tip #3 was (GRC) was it for me. I’m currently completing the Azure 900 course and The Qualysguard Training Course after being retired since 2011.
I’m getting into cyber security and let me tell you how stressful and mind numbing it all is I feel so incredibly stupid and stressed figuring out how I was going to learn all of this and not even get to apply it to my jobs but this video letting me know that it’s not like the movies, I don’t need to know how to hack or code took such a weight off my shoulder because getting into it and studying for my cybersecurity+ certification I’ve never been in this tech field and everything I’m learning rn is the start but it’s so hard I just kept losing motivation
Absolutely agree. I'm a Software QA Engineer and no degree. You do need to have some kind of IT understanding and be able to speak about how it is transferable to the job you're interviewing for, but degrees aren't even brought up at all. Especially in Manual and Black Box Testing.
Honestly, the GRC is a straightforward role, which requires no technical knowledge nor extensive time to acquire it. However, i love the technical part of cybersecurity, such as coding, ethical hacking, and analysing. Which is why i want to master those areas. Great content bro.
my confidence soared the very moment you mentioned an access control concept that i JUST learned about; 'separation of duties'. c: it tells me i'm on the right path.
Boyd…thank you so much for letting us know how tough the industry is to get in the cybersecurity field with no prior IT admin experience. Thank goodness I have good ITF+ knowledge, but that A+ and Sec+ ain’t no joke haha! It’s all concepts, but the roadmap is now here. I started watching you 2 weeks ago and I’ve already started cybersecurity projects on my home based windows OS. I never knew what “Nmap” was and “ssh” 😅. Also, didn’t know how different Linux command prompts were than windows. Gotta show a company why I have a passion to do this. Well, I will definitely show you, Mr. Hiring Recruiter! Another thing, that Qualys SIEM VMDR training was no joke 🫡
Now I understand that I like cybersecurity only on "paper". If this is part of cybersecurity, then I should continue with my original career path. This stuff that cybersecurity agents has to do sound extremely boring for me. Thank you so much for creating this video.
Amen to number 2. Lots of sticks in the mud in every profession. In the private sector it’s gotta be crippling for a business to have no movement on anything because of somebody who doesn’t know enough to enable project implementations, that’s great that you learned your lesson. In the military this is very common.
Love the videos Boyd. Could you keep posting them to the Podcast channel? I don't always have time to watch, but I have plenty of driving time to listen.
Look I know it's an expensive option. But I upgraded to you tube premium so I could do this. You can lock your screen and the video still plays the audio. I swore I'd never get premium cause it bothered me how much it's shoved in your face. But I have to say it's been the best money I've spent on streaming.
Hey Boyd, just found your channel. Been looking for a career path to transition out of owner operator trucking but not the owner operator income lol. I'm glad I found your channel. Gonna Bing watch this weekend and definitely get in touch with you soon. Thanks
Great video bro . I’m in the UX design industry applying for jobs. I watch your videos anyways because a lot of it applies to UX and what’s the name of the background music you use ?
I believe a security engineer needs to have knowldge and understanding of the system they are protecting. In the security space, I hear a lot of senior experts saying that a lot of new cyber security personnels coming into the space are missing a lot of fundamental understanding like Networking, OS familiarity, basic knowldge of protocols and their roles (port 53, 21, 80, 443 etc.) Cloud fundamentals etc. IMO, you cannot protect what you dont know and I would not trust a mechanic to work on my car if they have no experience working on car. Therefore, why should I trust a cycber security engineer to protect my network when they have no basic or intermediate knowldge of networking?
I found this video incredibly helpful as I started navigating the CyberSecurity world. The information will assist me in working with my current company to move into Cyber. As I study for my Security + Exam hearing about GRC is an interesting area. I currently work as a Support Engineer, who assists with Vulnerabilities and Patching. I was on the radar for an IGA role within my company but they decided to go with someone with more experience. I just have one question - After taking the Sec + would it be worth it to take the CISM or should I go for another Cyber Cert?
Hello.I am interested in Cybersecurity but people in my country are not having interest it as a job rather regarding software engineers and the rest. Please what is the way forward and how do i go about the field?
Best advice! I’m currently enrolled into a course and I’m not about all that coding 😂😢 can you highlight what one should concentrate on to be more specific to GRC
Subbed. Great content. As someone looking to transition out of the Finance industry and into GRC, do you have a particular direction on where to start first? Thanks 3. Is probably my favorite, but they all were helpful
I do have a really good question though, if I later wanted to get into a cyber security field and get a manager position, or other high paying position, I would need at least a bachelors degree right? Also, wouldn’t I get paid more if I had a degree too?
Hi Boyd, I just found your channel a couple of days ago and I found super interesting how you mentor people on how to get jobs in the Tech field. I am a Technical Manager of the School of Biology in Wellington, I don't have IT skills to be honest. Do you think I can go straight away for a entry level cyber security role? after some training of course. Or do you recommend me to get first a QA IT role or business analyst role, and then after some experience get into the cybersecurity field? Thanks :)
what degree do you recommend me doing not tech related but with that degree can get in tech like I wanna get in cyber security but do a degree that has the skills and not related do you have any recommendations like I got 2 in mind finance and optometry???
Uh... I'm not sure I can fully agree, not fully disagree on saying no, or enabling success. A security analyst can and should say no when doing so is appropriate, and that does happen. Some things are hard nope. That said, finding alternatives is part of the job, but not exactly the security analyst job. The analyst job is to have a security policy, and determine if the item under review would violate policy. The policies should already imply or entail what needs to happen to move forward. Security analysts are not software architects.
I’m high school right now, and my school has course for cyber security Right now I’m studying for my CompTA+ certification or (Information Technology Specialist in Networking) anybody have tips for moving on the future
Go CCNA instead of Network+ when you're ready for the networking side - David Bombal, CCIE, is also a solid resource and has a bomb YT channel. Super Important: Learn Python and Javascript now. They'll make it to where you can automate a lot of repetitive tasks and data scraping. Most Important: Stay far away from anything this dude on this channel tells you. There is no shortcut to being a rock solid IT pro. And he's out of his mind telling people that they can be IT auditors without knowing anything about IT. LOL 😂
@@BoydClewis I will be signing up after the school is over. I have a lot to do with my babies and I can focus with the STAAR and other testing. I like what I hear and see!
