Gorbachev accepted the reunification because he was powerless to do otherwise. If he were to make a resistance, it wouldn’t work because his economy was collapsing. I understand the point you’re making, but one of the parties involved in this agreement no longer exist. There is no Soviet union. The Baltic states are free. Ukraine has independence. Georgia as independence. Belarus has independence. None of those countries were independent at the time. They were subjugated in this larger Soviet union.
@ Negative. Like a marriage, contracts end when one party is dead. You wouldn’t hold to an ancient agreement with the Roman Empire because a deal is a deal. You wouldn’t honor a lease agreement to a defunct company no longer in operation because a deal is a deal. Swallow reason - it’s good medicine.
Those countries who are today in NATO & EU would be with their neck under the russian boots begging for mercy if not for NATO umbrella. It was a golden opportunity for eastern europe. Freedom loving people in Ukraine, Belarus & Georgia crave to be part of NATO protection & EU. Paid for it with massive horrors in their long history.
The term "NATO expansion" is misleading, it implies that NATO forciply expanded to the current boundaires rather than what really happened. Which was that easter European did not want to be invaded after Moscow led two brutal invasions of Chechnya. Plus if it really freaked them out, then they wouldnt be moving all ground troops from their new NATO border with Finland. It truly does not make sense for them to do that if NATO truly posed such an existential threat

More than wanted, they needed protection. Without NATO they would be the Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian Oblasts in Russia right now. I’d assume they’d also make up the majority of the Storm Z suicide assault squads in Ukraine, too…
The initial expansion was in 1999. That did not strain Russian NATO ties. There was a joint nato Russian platform. This was effective in getting us to use liberated former Soviet steppe countries to go after al Quaeda and the Taliban. The first split was over Iraq. Russia felt that it opinion on the state of Iraq was not being listened to. There were warnings from bush senior security and intelligence guys that the risk to Russia American relations were at risk over this policy. The post Iraq war nato expansion was rapid but only after Russian aggression to its neighbors were being voiced and later acted upon.
No its not real. There is an interview from gorbatischow himself with a german newspaper, where he says that such promises were not made to him and they would even not have made sense, because at that time the warsaw pact was still in tact as the soviet union collapsed a bit later.
Well, looks like Russia should’ve become a democracy along time ago. They would’ve been better off. As long as Russia keeps the status quo the situation will never change.
Gorbachev accepted the unification of Germany…. I still don’t get it . Why on this planet some other country’s leaders should accept other countries business? We, humans, stink !
This is such a selective narrative. In 1990 Gorbachev was head of the Soviet union and anything east of West Germany was either a part of the Soviet union or a member of the Warzaw pact.
They desolved the Warsaw pack, denuclearized(weapons not energy)Ukraine, let go of eastern Germany. We NATO broke up Yugoslavia, Kosovo from Serbia, overthrew a legitimately elected Ukrainian president.
Well what happened was that other nations saw the benefits of NATO after the USSR fell apart. And they approached NATO and asked to join. Ask them why. Georgia was not NATO member Ukraine was not a NATO member. What happened to them? Hint. Russia invaded both countries and used the same military force to take them over.
Western Europe always had to worry about Russian expansion. So does Central Europe. Russia does not have to fear western expansion into Russia. Russia has nothing to fear. But central and western Europe do. Which is why NATO expanded!!!
Europe wants to divide and conquer, I believe America should join Russia to even out the playing field. Russia is not the enemy, The EU and Nato are the one world order

And by that you just cause Russia to invade your country, hey listen I know you are a sovereign country but at least try to work both ways, make Russia happy but also work with the west, like a neutral stance
Yeah, our word is no longer trustworthy. I watched the Tucker/Putin interview and last night the Tucker/ Lavrov interview. WE have gone back on our word, not been trustworthy, and in many instances painted Russia as something they are not. I like Sergey Lavrov. He seems very level headed and honest- and I have listened to him before, last night was not the first time. All they want is to be treated fairly. Also, Putin in his older years , to me comes off as someone who reveres life and the lives of his people. USA government have been the ones who have not been trustworthy, lacking integrity. So sad that we have had people representing USA that don't represent the people's wishes. The constituents don't want war. Only the war machine wants war. The people who are enriching themselves want war. Luckily, we know, Jerimiah 23:5 ~ God is Just. The " Lake of Fire " awaits.
That "verbal assurance" is irrelevant is it wasn't a written agreement. It was also a promise made with the head of the USSR which collapsed shortly after. Russia failed to keep their side of the Budapest memorandum, an actual bipartisan treaty. They would respect Ukraines sovereignty and borders, yet they annexed Crimea in 2014. Before that NATO veto'd every Ukraine membership application as Ukraine would remain neutral as long as Russia respected its borders. After 2014, Ukraine had every right to join NATO.
@ Removing the gold standard was done by formal agreements and legislation, not by Nixon "verbally agreeing" to remove the gold standard. And what does that have to do with anything. Politicians verbally assure and lie all the time, Putin does it all the time, the US presidents, everyone. That's why written and signed agreements exist.
@LK-ui9rx I agree with you that people lie. It's a big part of the problem. Politicians make promises to get in office then follow their own agenda. I never said the removal of the gold standard was verbal. IMO it wasn't a smart move for the people, it only benefited government/federal reserve. No matter what, I agree with PBD - your word matters. Integrity matters. Do some roll reversal on the NATO borders. USA would not tolerate what is happening. It's good to be able to talk out opinions in an adult way, without name calling or yelling. I appreciate your opinion.
Let me explain to you why the Russians did not ask for a written agreement: BECAUSE IN THESE DAYS IT WAS UNTHINKABLE FOR EVERYBODY THAT NATO WOULD EXPAND. EVENTUALLY NATO EXTENDED BECAUSE THEY SAW DA RUSSIA WAS IN A WEAK STATE AND DID NOT EVEN REACT FOR KOSSOVO.
This guy is an absolute zero of a wanna be expert. He was pro-Ukraine and now he's pro-Russia. People like that are dangerous. And he's not the smartest dude. Let me explain him: Those verbal agreements are only valid for the ones involved. Nations and future political leaders can't be forever stucked for things said and done in the past because times change and the World evolves. Another thing for the less smart guy: Nations and their people are free to choose if they want to be part of NATO, EU, BRICS, etc. It's an individual choice made by every country based on their freedom of choice and sovereignty.

We remember the 90-s when the West promised to help, but instead literary robbed us and provoked conflicts inside and outside our borders. And now it will take a very long time to learn to trust you again!
Merry Christmas to you all!

You don’t understand because you have the wrong reading material, and not because you haven’t access to it. It’s in your house. The outcome is written. It is explicit. It is 100% accurate and you are ignoring it. Suffer in ignorance!
What is amazing is why Russia trusted the US and the west, after WW2.
Saying "verbal" 3 times only weakens your argument. Putin also "verbally" assured he would not invade Ukraine weeks before the invasion.
Ignorant.
@@GordanaIsailovic-mi7dePatrick bet David? Yeah
Yeah, after NATO kept toasting Ukraine.
No they didn’t you ignoramus!
Russia Invaded cu they killed russians in ukraine and broke the neutrality pact .
Gorbachev nearly drowned russia
Ask the American Indian’s Can American Government Can Be Trusted With Any Treaties They Made … The Answer Is “ HELL NO” 😮😢
More crying 😢
East German states do not have self-determination? was the request for NATO membership not submitted by the states in question? Has anyone asked these states if they want to remain under Russian influence? what did Ukraine pay with 1700 nuclear warheads?
Thank you for covering this extremely important event.
From EU! a good advice for everything!!! CHECK REAL!!!!!! FACTS instead of idiots claiming CRAP LIES WITHOUT ANY PROOF AT ALL! These statements are 100% FALSE!!! AND A LIE !
If you have questions about these topics, research it for yourself I don't believe Patrick has a doctorate in European history. We can find out quite easily ✔️.
Why does he need a doctorate for us not to agree with what he's saying!
Better always have documents signed for the future. Never put your trust in human beings. Verbal agreement is so fragile.
Yes, but that is not too bad for Europian countries to get rid of Russia
I believe the politicians at the time genuinely had no intentions of going eastward but the politicians that followed over the years had other plans
This is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT, times changed and EVERYONE is under a mistaken impression that Putin is some choir boy who hasn’t made both moves and threats to absorb non-NATO Countries who then joined NATO for protection. This entire smokescreen about the nobility of Putin and Lavrov is nonsense.
From EU! a good advice for everything!!! CHECK REAL!!!!!! FACTS instead of idiots claiming CRAP LIES WITHOUT ANY PROOF AT ALL! These statements are 100% FALSE!!! AND A LIE
I have heard Dave Smith saying this for years and comparing it to our Cuba crisis JFK
Yeah. And Russia promised not to attack Ukraine if Ukraine gave up its nuclear arms. So here we are.
he Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances. This memorandum was signed on December 5, 1994, by the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. It provided security assurances to Ukraine in exchange for Ukraine's accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) as a non-nuclear-weapon state and the transfer of its nuclear arsenal to Russia. The USA Russia and UK violated this treaty.
Russia should have gotten that on paper.
NATO did not expand aggressively. Countries requested to join NATO.
when Putin keeps his word, others may follow....
💯👍🏽
Gorbachev accepted the reunification because he was powerless to do otherwise. If he were to make a resistance, it wouldn’t work because his economy was collapsing.
I understand the point you’re making, but one of the parties involved in this agreement no longer exist. There is no Soviet union. The Baltic states are free. Ukraine has independence. Georgia as independence. Belarus has independence. None of those countries were independent at the time. They were subjugated in this larger Soviet union.
You re 1d10t by nature or by education?
Your point being? So the west only honours agreements that agree with its own hegemonic aspirations.
this is just weasel talk . a deal is a deal , any self respecting institution will stick to what the deal implies.
@@reneesquivel6449 So why anybody will have a deal with the already dieing western empires?
I will buy a piece from each one of your merchandise as soon as I can, because you do what you do right now. With truth we all win. Respect

Well you know who the real bad guy now.
And russia promised not to step one foot into ukraine if they gave up their nukes...
Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania desperately wanted protection
More than wanted, they needed protection. Without NATO they would be the Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian Oblasts in Russia right now. I’d assume they’d also make up the majority of the Storm Z suicide assault squads in Ukraine, too…
why
Too bad. A deal is a deal. Scumbags for breaking the deal
@@LakeNonaFan ...? Because they were occupied a tyrannical Communist state, and wanted to be free?
For their survival…the first responsibility of ANY GOVERNMENT.
I mean, if it's verbal it doesnt mean shit. It has to be ratified by a treaty, duh
Why do you guys spout Russian talking points…
The initial expansion was in 1999. That did not strain Russian NATO ties. There was a joint nato Russian platform. This was effective in getting us to use liberated former Soviet steppe countries to go after al Quaeda and the Taliban. The first split was over Iraq. Russia felt that it opinion on the state of Iraq was not being listened to. There were warnings from bush senior security and intelligence guys that the risk to Russia American relations were at risk over this policy. The post Iraq war nato expansion was rapid but only after Russian aggression to its neighbors were being voiced and later acted upon.
I dont know about this because i cant even find a single video about this verbal agreement. Is this real? I mean Germany did join Nato in 1955.
No its not real. There is an interview from gorbatischow himself with a german newspaper, where he says that such promises were not made to him and they would even not have made sense, because at that time the warsaw pact was still in tact as the soviet union collapsed a bit later.
This is so unfair. Just look at bad bad Russia how close they put their border to the nato countries
American imperialism is exactly what happened. Make peace, not war. ✌️ ☮️ 🕊
American imperialism is an oft quoted line of putin's. Hmm?
Nothing like deciding for another country. I think Estonia wanted to join nato? They don't have a choice!
But it didn't happend in Indian modern history
Well, looks like Russia should’ve become a democracy along time ago. They would’ve been better off. As long as Russia keeps the status quo the situation will never change.
My Eastern European cousins are nervous of the Russians goose step back into their countries again.
Be careful who you watch
yeah, we also want protection, what is so wrong about that.
Didn't Russia promised Ukraine that they will never attack Ukraine if they gave up their nuclear weapons? so what happened there?😊
Russia wanted to join nato ? Nato said no ? Because if Russia joined nato , nato does not need to exist?????
Haha as Lenin once has said for people in the channel - useful idiots.....
Still ignoring Poland ....that time
From Bouth sides ....
What about Now....
This deal is also on paper.
Stop making up rubbish..
Russia does have to fear western expansion. They are right at their border you fool
What a load of guff ! Can I remind you that France has Germany have both invaded Russia . France even captured Moscow. Germany has invaded Russia twice in the Last 100 years or so. The last time they destroyed half of Russia . And about 25-30 million died . Educate yourself before you bump your gums
But those who promised are now dead 😅😅😅. World 🌎 changed
Listen my friend i am from a post-soviet country and we wanted by our own choice to join NATO because that is the way to stop Russian interference in our country! Did you get it now?
And by that you just cause Russia to invade your country, hey listen I know you are a sovereign country but at least try to work both ways, make Russia happy but also work with the west, like a neutral stance
Unfortunately, this guy is not including many ongoing geopolitical changes that occurred. He needs a history lesson.
Basically every country west of Russia is signed up to the EU and Nato. Not 1 inch but thousands of Kilometres.
The Soviet Union fell after this and Gorbachev was no longer their leader due to coup.
Russia is not the Soviet Union
Semantics
Speech Act
Russia feel like they might be invaded
Putin is showing restraint but not for long
Regan Promised Gorbachev, NATO would not move one inch eastward.
🙄 He's another Liar, Liar Pants on fire 🔥 kinda guy.
@LK-ui9rx Tell me a verbal agreement means nothing when the USA dollar collapses because the gold standard was removed by Nixon. You word matters.
NATO I promised the Soviets not the Russians
Just check in history, how many times Russia had war with Ukraine. Many many times.
i mean technically it was a deal with the soviet union so no... russia became a different entity
Yep. Totally agree. Trump should start being nicer to Mexico. Or Mexico may let Russia place some basis there 😅
Exactly 💯
