We had a lot of Amazon product people join our smaller startup (~200). The culture rapidly changed from casual + friendly + effective, to CYA + optics + competition + stress from artificial deadlines. Net negative.
Competition and stress are underrated. Amazon is a place for performers. I would agree that it's not casual but that's a good thing. Amazon gets things done. I would think any startup would want a performance based culture.
I believe more people would contribute if you promise anonymity but still verify their credentials just so it isn't some pretend engineer. Imagine what truth can people say when they are anonymous.
I was in a similar state in a different company working on a framework with no documentation and something that's non transferable to different company. All I did was quit and work on some open source projects and my own startup
I saw a table with the avg turnover of engineers at big tech. Amazon was the worst, with 1.3 years. The pay may be higher than the market avg, but if you exit after 15 months, burnt out, i'm not sure about the net gain.
Of all the Bigtech cos, Amazon is the worst, has been the worst since 2011. Third class in fact. Currently, all are in bad shape. Fintech trading cos beat any Bigtech co. hands down.

y'all had the control but didn't manage it right

@StevenMaese 😂😂😂 so others are not performing thats some dumb comment
agree, same happened at my company, they jump in quickly , and think they are from heaven and look down on us like rats
I worked at Amazon as a SDE and it was truly terrible.
I assumed you were going to say incredible, but I had to read it a second time.
I was an SDE 2 at Amazon for 2 years, terrible culture and managers, some engineers can't code at all. don't join
Pay must have been amazing
Was the pace and load insane?
The crossover we've all been waiting for
Thanks for the chat! It was lots of fun. Looking forward to the next videos in this series!

I think he gives them an option to remain anonymous. For his google and fb interviews I remember at least 1-2 of them were anonymous
Thanks Rahul! Your analysis was spot on.

Please do taco bell next. I'm applying to be a taco maker.

They don't like to taco about taco bell
Taco developer 2 or Sr Taco developer or …?
Sounds like not a good place to be. I wonder what they would say if they were anonymous
Right...I want to hear the unfiltered truth! No filter
It would be nice to hear why they left Amazon.
I’d love to listen from Engineers in NVIDIA in this series.
I've worked at Amazon for 3 years. I really enjoyed that job.
love Steve Huynh's conversation
Do it for Microsoft next
Please do one on Apple.
Won’t happen, Apple will sue. They secretive
3:50 Thank you Amazon for supporting my old TV's prime video app
I'm saying, that's a lost art these days
Jeff Bezos is championed in Starwars Sith theology, here on RUclips. Look for the video!
Amazon is terrible, you get stuck at SDE 2 for >5years atleast !
Or you are pipped out in < 2 and lose your 2nd vest.
Would have been interesting to hear from some engineers who left before 1-2 years, a lot of survivorship bias here, insightful nonetheless

Damn, where have I heard that video idea before 😂

Third class in fact.

What makes you say so?
I personally see that 1) it is a manager-first company, and 2) the Engineering is miles behind other big tech.
@@nhbknhb what makes you think AWS is miles behind?
"Third class"... quite the euphemism! IYKYK

Please make one on Adobe…

Can’t easily buy kindle books for IPad. I could a few years ago simply. Fk A
All the stupid corporate shenanigans! Where are the Linus Torvalds of the world hiding when you need them? 😊
Everything I’ve learned about working at Amazon is terrible unless you’re Jeff Bezos.
Please keep the "do the right thing by your customers". Tech moves so fast these days and I hate it! Like noone asks for "Meta AI" in instagram
Its sounds like an actual work interview. Boring and fake. Where's the drama?
Amazon is not an evil company, I second to that.
Each nation on the planet: let’s learn US accent at least, my accent is embarrassing 🫢
Indians: 🤷
Why exactly should Indians learn any other country's accent? Maybe you should learn Indian Accent.
British accent is the best
