Black Gumbo shares our suburban, backyard, sustainable gardening efforts. We work a small-scale teaching garden, much like the typical Zone 9a backyard garden and raised beds, the kind of gardening accessible to all. We also grow lots of fruit and berries. We tend to take the slice of life approach and hope you will enjoy our family, our dog, our cooking, our adventures, and occasionally some commentary and advice. We love family, joy and friendship, and we invite you to enjoy these things with us!

Welcome back, Scott. Glad to see you back on.
YIPPEE ❤. Florida 9b
You would think a good plastic protector like 303 would extend the life of the plant trays.
I was a 7a/7b but I am now only 7b. So not necessarily a change, but I'm thankful for shifting from the line.
Hello from Zone 8a Central Arkansas. I did not changed zones; however, I moved about 35ish miles more into Zone 8a. I have Yarrow and Rudbeckia under lights and will start tomatoes and peppers soon. I look forward to following your 2024 gardening season. Happy gardening. Peace.
Welcome back! Joyful day!
I had good results using shade cloth over my tomatoes. They never drooped during the summer because of the sun.
I’m a little north east of you in Angelina County zone 9a now used to be 8b. Weather has been pretty strange the last couple years. We were down in Houston for a while and the weather there has been quite variable lately. My in-laws live there so we still visit. I live in the piney woods and I did start my tomatoes a week or two ago and they’ve all finally germinated. I grow lots of indeterminate because they seem to do really well for me here. I’m excited to see my peppers germinating. Only two types have come up so far, shishito and California wonder. I am excited to see the rest pop up! It’s my first year using heat mats and my new greenhouse.☺️I’m loving it so far. Happy to see you gardening and growing those plants. I love this time of year, it’s a chance to start it all anew again even if the freezes left you with a decimated garden or weeds took over. ☺️Best of luck in this new gardening season neighbor! 👍🏻
Good to see you again Scott
Yay Phoebe! Good to see her. We had some success with Cherokee Carbon tomatoes and and sun gold in 2023. The Carbons stopped producing during the insane dry hot summer but started again in the fall. I usually prefer to grow red tomatoes only, but those two were worth making an exception. I have a lot of messy garden areas to clean up before it gets hot again. Lots of tangled vines to cut down.
I missed your videos so glad you are back.
Glad your back. I learn a lot from you and have missed your shows.
Hey, welcome back!
I like to do mostly tomatoes and peppers as well. Our hardinez zone has been a little crazy for the past four years as well.
Have a wonderful day Scott.
Welcome back you've been missed.
Welcome back. I volunteer at Mercer Botanical Gardens in Humble. When I have questions, I watch your videos.
That's the same size bowl I eat my frosted flakes in.
Welcome back 🍅🥒🌶
Great to see you back here. Here in Corpus Christi Texas, we went from 9b to 10. Looking forward to your new year of instruction. Thanks for all you do. Have a great night.
They realigned ours to 9B too but we keep getting snow and its cold so I don't believe it. Lol
First time subscriber. Yes, my zone changed from zone 7b - 8a. I'm kind of like you, it's not really going to affect the way I garden because over all I keep a journal every year, so I know relatively the best times to start my seeds and when to expect things to happen. I have certain layouts of things to do in my garden around specific times of the year and they only fluctuate from a few days each year. Most times, I keep a pretty decent garden, but since my heart attack a couple years ago, things do get behind and it takes awhile to catch up. I'm glad to see you covered the area of the heat mat and lights not necessary to be used at that phase of the germination. Some folks don't realize that it's NOT the light that germinates the seed but the moisture and heat of the soil. I usually won't turn my lights on until like the third day of my seeds being on the mat. (Of course, I made myself a grow box using a light rope in the bottom as a heat mat.) I use have it on and my lights, the temperature in my box rises rapidly and it's out of the range of the perfect temps to germinate seeds. I learned this two years in a row. LOL.
Also, I appreciate the fact that you went back to the simple Jiffy seed starting trays because it took over 10 years for me to even consider buying some of the trays I have now, which are the type you can stand on. BUT, It was just the trays, so I still use the flats and domes to help with the germination. It's a basic 1020 tray which fits perfectly inside of the old setups.
I usually start my pepper seeds first, maybe just by a couple weeks because they tend to take longer to germinate and get established than do my Tomato plants. The artic blast we got in middle of March which killed all my healthy pepper and tomato plants, taught me a lesson in how soon I should start my plants. I'll go ahead and get my Peppers started, but as far as the Tomato plants, I'm holding off til middle of March for those. Looking back in my Journal, I started a new batch of Tomato and pepper seeds last year on March 14th, 2023. By April 24th 2023 I had all my Tomato plants in the beds and my Peppers planted as well.
Last year was an amazing year for the garden here, I hope it was for ya'll as well. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos and I'll chime in from time to time and try to help others if I can.
And to everyone, Happy 2024 Garden Season. Get out there and do something to improve your garden. Doesn't need to be much, as long as it's consistent. God Bless.
Yup, I'm in 9b too. Just started trying to clear up the winter mess..but the flowers that overwintered..all starting to show and I have a few blooms already
Hey Neighbor! Good to see you back! Are we doing the single seed challenge this year?
Yes, I need to get a video out.
Good to see you and Phoebe again.
So...turning adversity into a learning opportunity for all of us? Good to see you.
USDA zone is based on average coldest temperatures not the average hottest. I moved right around the time the zone changed from a place that was and still is 5b however 5a was pretty close to where I lived before but now 6a begins just a few miles south of where I used to live. The 1990 USDA zone map for my old area would've been 4b. Where I currently live in 1990 was 8a, in 2005 was 8b and today is 9a.
Honestly the USDA zone map is only particularly helpful to determining if something will be perennial. Things that are only ever annuals or perennial in locations that never get below 40 the zone map is largely meaningless, sure there's rules of thumb for certain zones meaning certain last frost days but that's still pretty variable between places that are in the same zone anyway.
Thanks! Yeah I misspoke, getting more frequent as I get older.
I'm still here. Don't worry about it. I post whenever I feel like it and lately I haven't felt like much the last two years. My channel is still here since 2007. RUclips was a hobby then and should still be. I hope you can get your growing season going well. I've started some seeds this year too.
Good to see you back.
So good to see your back.
Welcome back, always enjoy your videos❤❤❤
it's really nice you're turning that garden disarray into education for us. And goodness I wish you all all the best, Scott
PS my California 9A turned into 9B a few years back, it's a lot... warmer. i tried 40% shadecloth 2023, good! but 30% might be better.
Glad to see you back! I live in the next town over and you really help me know what and when to do things in my garden for our climate. I am looking forward to learn what to do to recover from the crazy weather we have had. Thanks for all you do!
Great to see you post a fresh video. As a first year backyard gardener I’ve been watching your old how-tos as a guide. You and Phoebe take care!
Scott- bought some sheep/goat feed learned from one of your re- nourishing potting soil… when and how much do I use and for what purpose. ( Also bought azomite granules, kelp meal for nutrients as suggested)-do I use all 3 or did I over buy. Want for growing herbs and tomatoes in pots on deck/ patio. I am in Zone 7 B( MD-Central part). So enjoy your videos . Many thanks, Diane
A handful or two of the feed will provide good nitrogen, azomite and kelp meal should have instructions but I'd add a handful of each mixed into the soil. Hard to over-do it with the kelp meal. For tomatoes you can also add some phosphate or bone meal, tomatoes like a little more phosphorus.
Nice to see you! Our zone didn't change in southwest Ohio. But the sky's have not been looking normal. The sun blocked by haze, the sky looking cloudy but with no clouds. And the permeant "fog" over the horizon every morning. Last year we were told this was from the wildfires in Canada. There is no reason being given this year.
Hey, he’s back! Let’s go
Hi Scott... great seeing you back.... do you also use your own seeds from your harvest?
Sometimes, depends on what it is. I keep cowpeas and herb seeds mostly.
So glad you're back, Scott. Looking forward to a great gardening season. Yes, our zone changed but I don't pay any attention to it. I just garden by watching the weather. Each year is different by a few weeks.🙏
I'm glad to see you and that you're OK. The weather has been super crazy all over, especially in Texas. Yes, my zone changed from 6b/7a to 7 in Tennessee. I'll enjoy watching more videos from you this year. Take care and have a very successful gardening year!
Welcome back to you also 🌻
I am so glad you are back!!! I’ve been searching for you. You have always been the garden mentor I listen too since we are in the same zone and I really like your no no sense approach to gardening!!!
So good to see you again!
We have been in a hard season, as well. Last summer all I had in the garden was volunteers. I did enjoy a nice fall/winter garden until the intense freezing weather. My zone did change from 8a to 8b. I plan to start seeds indoors this weekend. Welcome back and take care! Thanks for talking about gardening even when life is hard. It is a temptation to just show the good, pretty things--maybe even clean the garden up and present an "all is well" facade--glad you're keeping it real!
Missed you for sure! WE WERE JUST WONDERING ABOUT YOU! Welcome back! Can't wait for the new content❤
What a nice surprise!! Glad to see you again.
To answer your question, yes our zone changed from 7a to 7b .
We have what we call the original garden , for years we worked to improve the soil and the weed bank is unbelievable. I would like to reclaim that area . My husband talked about making a chicken tractor and letting the chickens have at it. Somehow , we got morning glory?? in there and it's aggressive and no matter how much we pull it up it won't stop.
Glad to have you back give Phoebe a pet and good luck on her diet.
Mssed you ! Glad you’re back with us
Glad to see you.
Good to see ya!
The weather this year Scott hasnt been conducive to gardening mate. I think you have been in the same court as me. Looking forward to this series. Good luck for a great gardening year in 2024 mate
Yes, we went from 8b to 9a in northern Louisiana. Good to see you again making videos!
I got a heat mat this year, and I'm making good use of the space on it by planting seeds in community pots. I started some peppers, tomatoes, and eggplants about three weeks ago and about a week ago, when they started developing true leaves, I took them off the heat mat and up-potted them into potting soil in 16 oz plastic cups. They all look like they're doing very well.
I put boiling water into the seed starter soil and let it set. I got the seed starter soil moist but not soaking wet. After I put the seeds in, I pour hydrogen peroxide over them and cover them with a piece of black plastic trash bag.
I do such small stuff that I have seeds left over from last year and older, and the hydrogen peroxide helps soften the cuticle around them and probably helps kill fungus and fungus gnat eggs. So far this year, no fungus gnats. I have to find people that I can trade seeds with. I'm curious about Jolene tomatoes and want to see how you do with them.
I'm told that this winter in Florida has been warmer than usual. Night time temperatures barely got into the twenties, but daytime temperatures this last week have been in the sixties.
I made too many starters for my indoor grow space again this year. I'll probably set the tomatoes and eggplants outside off the ground about the third week of February.
It amazes me that seeds become living plants and how fast they grow after they germinate.
welcome back, sending strength and prayers.
Good to see you Scott! 👊 To another garden season!
Great to see you back.
Missed you! Great to see you.
So glad to see you back! I did that Jalapeno sauce recipe with the last of my harvest and it was incredible! Thank you! Looking forward to more videos as Spring approaches :) God Bless you man of God!
hi Scott great to see you and your videos again looking forward to more thanks from nz
Hi Scott. Good to see you. Sorry you are going through a rough season. Praying for God's strength and grace in your life.
My zone did change. I'm in SE Missouri now and went from 6a to 6b. However, since I just moved up from 8b, my brain has to move in the reverse direction. I am excited to be able to grow more heirloom tomatoes now.
So great to 👀 see you and Pheobe. God bless!❤🎉
I am so glad you are back! I was just telling my husband that I hope all was ok. I find myself watching a lot of your older videos😄. I am excited to see your garden grow!
Good to see you back Scott. I'm in the midst of moving house down here in Australia (hopefully for the last time) .
So most of my plants have either been burnt by the sun or died from lack of watering.
Now I've got to build some new beds and get a Fall garden going - fast! Keep giving me inspiration to plant and grow lots of seeds. 👍
Welcome back my friend!! Yep my zone changed, but…I like you have been hit with late frost! I have put in a few early plants ,but reserving the bulk of my seedlings a few weeks later, yea I’ll have 113 summer temps here in Abilene, TX. I put up 40% shade cloths July, August, September. I have a little plastic grow tunnel I start my seeds in.
Glad u back glad u ok
Glad to see you back. I was in 8b (a stone’s throw from 9a) and now I’m in 9a. I am about 40 miles east of San Antonio along I-10. The zones mark the average coldest temperatures during the winter for the past decade. It’s a sad (and annoying) issue that there is no map of anything regarding the heat in summer.
Hi Scott
I’m so glad that you are ok and that you are back 😊
Missed you and your videos!
Yes I’m in north Mississippi and it changed I think 🤔 ha from 7a to 7b
Good to know on tray Ty. I agree some of the more expensive ones have to big of a dome.
God Bless you and your family
glad U are back
Yeah,I agree with everyone,it’s nice to see ya mr Scott! I’ll be interested to see what you’re at with the garden beds. Last season was a disaster for me here in southern Alberta. Seems like every kind of pest, critter, and hail storm landed on my garden. So I also have a pile of weeds to work on.
I've been missing your videos! Glad you are back! 😊
In Zone9b, now, as well. I have just started flower seeds indoors with lights. I am growing tomatoes and peppers with transplants. Hopefully starting blackberries this year. Good gardening.
I really like your training videos!! I live in Houston, so I am happy that you are showing things relevant to us.
I also, LOVE the picture of your "Employee of the Month" 😄😁🤣
Scott, it's so good to see you and Phoebe Sharona back in the garden! I'm starting my seeds too in zone 8-ish lol.
Welcome back.. my zone changed from 6b to 7a Massachusetts.. although we are way up north i still enjoy your videos and watching your gardening techniques
