Roscrans was surprised and beaten. Thomas saved the army but Roscrans got fired. Grant took charge and beat Bragg opening up the south to attack and defeat in detail as Sherman was given command in 64 when Grant moved East. It was not a strategic victory but southern forces could not replace the terrible losses from the battle. The north could.
