  • Last week we finished installing our Hydrovane and immediately wanted to test it out.
    So we pulled up anchor and hoisted our sails for a trip to Tintamarre, an island to the north of St Martin.
    Having been on anchor for a few weeks waiting for bad weather to pass, we were very excited to head off and use our Hydrovane for the first time.
    Initial impressions were fantastic and supported the need for us to be GOOD sailors first and know how to balance the sails and the boat well. For Adam, he aims to do this on most sails. For Khiara... I let him do it all! Which means I have a bit of a learning curve to face and a need to pay more attention in future!

      As a non sailor it is confusing however I enjoy that technical aspect in hopes I learn something. Like sailing at 80%. That’s something I’ll remember when that days comes when I buy my first boat. So many channels have gotten away from the sailing part and that’s why I been with them since almost the beginning.

    No, no, no, no, no, no, Ads, love the sailing jargon! Don't change the sailing jargon. I love it! And it's the authentic you, a fellow sailing nerd! There are dozens of sailing vlogs (with no content and the ladies featuring more decolletage than brain). But you and Khiara are perfect, just the right mix. Khiara is so lovely, a beauty to be sure, but her narrative of the sailing experience is just lovely, very real and heartfelt and intelligent, wonderful, and your "boy techno speak" is the perfect balance. Don't change a thing. From a fellow sailing nerd! God bless!!!

    When you said, "Turtle", Khiara it brought a smile to my face. Because about 30 minutes before that I had been watching turtles swimming (and mounting each other) in the river just by my house (Estepona, Costa del Sol, Spain). They are very shy. Sometimes they are sunbathing on the rocks. I have to stand very still or they all just slip into the water. Today the water was very clear, and still. Fun to watch them.
    At the end of the video, when I saw a gorgeous woman coming out of the water, it reminded me of a James Bond film. Of course, Khiara is much better looking than the film stars!

    Tintamarre is a favorite destination for us. We were married on Orient Beach and then sailed to Tintamarre for our reception with 15 of our closest strangers. Beautiful water, beach and sea life. Envious, as our 2020/21 season got waylayed by Yanmar failure. The phoenix will rise from the ashes with an electric kit and expanded lithium banks. Sometimes, tragedy is just the kick in your pants that you need. Enjoy the islands and the sunshine - which seems to cover more of the human body, in those parts.

  • @tuncgercek6155
    @tuncgercek6155 3 года назад

    @Adam: In the last episode, you found that you had to install the Hydrovane rudder in a way that would leave a bit of a gap between the rudder and the boat. You said something to the effect of "That's good because that will give it more power to steer the boat", whereas I believe it will have *less* steering power. Best way to work this out is to imagine that gap to be 5 metres (or more?). Would it have more or less power? I believe *less*. What you were probably thinking is "bigger rudder blade, more power", which is true, but not so much when it's far back from the boat. Anyway, in your case you had to install it that way due to space limitations, but we wouldn't want others to think "Good point! I'll install mine with a 1 metre gap" when they don't really have to. And really delighted to see it's working so well for you. It will change your life on long passages!

    • @SailingMillennialFalcon
      @SailingMillennialFalcon  3 года назад

      The further back the rudder is from the centre of gravity the longer its moment arm and the more torque it can generate to rotate the boat. Thus less force required from rudder for equal effect. Nothing to do with the size of the rudder.

    Hey guys , we had an issue with our hydrovane , when under power with the rudder attached it would ‘chatter’ due to the prop wash , looked like you had the same problem , eventually the locking pin sheared off In the shaft and I had to drop it apart to get the pin out , we now take the rudder off when we motor and have a spare couple of pins .. good video as always , safe sailing. I understand Khiara completely, I'd be intimidated by the vane the first time too because I don't really understand the physics of it. I can't wait for it to happen though because it'll mean that we will finally have our forever boat and start sailing the world. It WILL happen this year, we're just waiting for the borders to open so we can travel and buy our boat.

    • @PaulBKal
      @PaulBKal 3 года назад +1

      I suspect it’s not the vane she’s intimidated by so much as her perceived lack of sailing intuition as to when the boat is in trim. This is something you learn really quick as a kid sailing dinghies (otherwise you’re always capsizing) but for adults coming to sailing in keelboats, it’s far more difficult because the boat is so forgiving.
      Because this is now so much more important with the vane, it will come to her far quicker and within just a few sails where she is left to figure it out for herself, she will pick it up like a veteran, and wonder why it was so hard. Give it a go Khiara, you’ll be right in no time. And get of her way Adam and let her learn by herself!

    OMG the water there looks amazing. Maybe it's too much work, but I think you should just talk in full sailor jargon and include layman speak subtitles in the RUclips closed captions! I don't know what all is involved in doing that, but I think it would be awesome. Maybe include a reminder to turn in subtitles in your intro bumper. Just add a permanent caption while your intro is playing, that says "click CC to see translations of sailing terms in real time" I am working towards getting my own boat and sailing off into the sunset, so seeing the jargon put into practice is really helpful.

    Yea for the Hydrovane! That is an awesome addition and should serve you well. Will Hydrovane have a crew name (get personified) as on many boats.? Lovely episode.
