    Hiya again, I'm back and you thought it was safe!
    A few words about this kit... I WANT ONE!!!! I've been watching a load of You Tube videos on products and reading manufactures blurb and this kit...
    1) As you say the under cut so that the disc and punch clear the die as part of the cutting process is perfect. I've made very many professional sound multi-cores with 32 plugs and sockets at the ends, a lot of round holes to punch so I do know a good hole when I see one. This kit does the job perfectly as far as I can see.
    2) The chamfer on the strike end of the punch, looks neat, nice clean edge... it is to delay the forming of mushrooming down of the metal of the punch. That protects your hand from sharp and I mean sharp curls of steal bending over and also their jamming in the die.
    3) The mat. Takes the rebound out of the strike as you hit the punch thus dampening shock and sound. Also protects your bench or whatever surface you use this on. Protects the disc and punch as they fall free.
    4) Lube, perfect for long term use protecting the punch and dies.
    5) Holder, perfect for keeping it all together in one place. I hate the, 'Now where is the 1/4" punch' saga...
    Would I love this more in metric? Yes but I could live with inches just cos it's all so good. Would I love to try Pepe tools products and others to review? Yes, but I don't do videos partly cos my voice is bad, half my vocal cords are frozen, such is life.
    Thank you for reading, take care...

      yeah, so true! These punches have this angle, which make a whole difference when cutting. I also have a simple, cheap disc cutter with 5 different sizes, but it's so much harder to use it because the punches are flat. Cutting is much harder, and metal bends. Making the cutting side angled was a brilliant idea :)) Hope you can upgrade to this one soon!! :)

    Hiya Dear Lady Stardust and thank you for a great video. A few points, if I may?... I hope in order...
    Why is the centre knob 'Easy to hit'? Did you mean 'Easy to miss'?
    Most videos on this sort of punch call for an equal thickness shim under the opposite side to the metal you are cutting to stop the top disk tilting. Having never used one I can only go on what Soham and other reviewers have said???
    I love the 'fish eye' look of this pendant... Very clever...
    I love the use of a different metal for the moon, great contrast. The use of the blackening fluid is always wonderful.
    Do they make the kit in metric?
    The 3/8" did not fit it's hole in the plastic base, small matter but is it indicative of other sizing?
    You cut off the last word...
    BUT, a fantastic video great to see you not just stamp out two discs, but to see it in different metals takes the viewer on a trip into your wooded hills as we travel with you as you make the piece from scratch. Your skill with the saw is inspiring, thank you... What blade and thickness of silver did you use?
    More like this please they teach a lot.

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  4 года назад +1

      Hi Steve! Thanks so much for great comment, as always :) Great point about the "easy to hit" part! Oh dear, of course that's not what I meant, yet somehow it made it to the final version. I will make a note of it in the description box under the video. Thanks, good catch!
      So, because I've used fairly thin metal sheet in the video (0.50mm) I didn't mention using the shim on the opposite side. But it's true, that using it will be advised with the thicker gauge metal, to balance the top plate of the cutter. I've used 6/0 blade for sawing.
      Ah yes... the last word has been cut short, because the video got corrupted while exporting yet again! This time however I've decided to leave it as it is, thinking that done is better than perfect.
      I'm super happy you liked the project and the video, thanks so much for wtching! :))

    • @stevecoster322
      @stevecoster322 4 года назад

      @@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 0.5 mm, and that's enough thickness? I have learnt from you yet again... Plus about the non need for the shim, I would have used 0.8mm and waisted money, thank you. I'm doing a friends name in silver, 1mm as there is nothing added on to it to add strength and thickness, maybe try 0.8 for the next one? I know some teachers/jewellers don't rate paste solder but I like you do. The pluses you mention don't seem relevant to some, "If your not using a borax cone and hard solder your not doing it right"... Hum, if you can't see the solder then the slight colour change doesn't matter and sometimes hard needs too much heat and your parts are so small and fine looking!
      I did like the idea of hitting the locking knob as part of the way to use it... and with a brass hammer yet.
      Your skill with a saw is awe inspiring, I'm glad you did the videos about sawing.
      I've decided that when I win enough on the Euro lottery I'm buying a non sail super boat and going around the world with a super equipped studio! Please join me for Iceland and Japan or in fact anywhere you can get inspiration. New Zealand and the Pacific islands for their native art, but then all around the Med, Rome and the other early cultures like back to Egypt for more of their influence. I've always loved the Greek key motive and Celtic art... I could go on and on and on and...
      Take care dear lady... Steve

    You'd do better to put metal of the same thickness across from the metal you're punching. You can see in your video that the top part tilts when you tighten it. That makes it not work as well and makes it wear more quickly.

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  4 года назад +2

      I agree 😊 I use the shim on the other side, especially for the Thicker metal. It balances the cutter. I didn't use it in the video, but it's best to use it to keep the tool in the perfect working order for longer
