  • Bobby Darin performing Beyond The Sea, originally recorded in 1959. The song showcases Darin's versatile vocal range and his ability to effortlessly shift between crooning and an upbeat swing styles. With its catchy melody and infectious energy, Beyond the Sea became one of Darin's signature songs and a classic in the pop music genre.
Originally composed in French as La Mer by Charles Trenet in 1945, the English lyrics were revised by Jack Lawrence, turning it into the love song Beyond The Sea.
Beyond the Sea tells a romantic tale of longing for a far away loved one, painting a vivid picture of a sailor who dreams of being reunited with his sweetheart beyond the sea. Darin's charismatic delivery, combined with the song's lively brass arrangement and rhythmic drive, perfectly capture the essence of youthful optimism and adventure.
Bobby Darin Beyond The Sea Lyrics:
    Somewhere beyond the sea
    Somewhere waitin' for me
My lover stands on golden sands
And watches the ships that go sailin'
    Somewhere beyond the sea
    She's there watchin' for me
If I could fly like birds on high
Then straight to her arms, I'd go sailin'
    It's far beyond a star
    It's near beyond the moon
    I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon
    We'll meet beyond the shore
    We'll kiss just as before
Happy we'll be beyond the sea
And never again I'll go sailin'
I know beyond a doubt, ah!
My heart will lead me there soon
We'll meet, I know we'll meet beyond the shore
    We'll kiss just as before
Happy we'll be beyond the sea
And never again I'll go sailin'
    No more sailin'
    So long, sailin'
    Bye bye, sailin'
    Move on out, captain

Although he died too young he was never under rated. A highly versatile performer with many modes and also a decent actor despite a continuous battle with his health.

It was not uncommon in the early days of open heart surgery (maybe even now) for patients to suffer some brain damage. Darin exhibited what his family thought was dementia but likely the result of the surgery. That might explain why he subsequently failed to take antibiotics before a dental procedure. Bacteria entered his bloodstream, went to his heart valves...He died in the recovery room shortly after his second open heart surgery, never regaining consciousness. 💜

Love the key changes. Depends what key you play it in but we played it in G major. Starts in G major. Then to B major. Then to D major and then modulates all the way home back to G major. Repeat to the end where it finishes in G major. Innovative writing for the time by Charles Trenet. French origin, "La Mer" meaning The Sea. Translated by Jack Lawrence.

This, along with "Mack the Knife" came from Darin's breakthrough pop album, That's All. The orchestra was arranged and conducted by Richard Wess and included 32 year old Doc Severinsen in the trumpet section. That awesome drum break was jazz great, Don Lamond.
