When cold starting-5 seconds crank, 5 seconds stop, 5 seconds crank, 5 seconds crank-allows heat soaking the cylinders. And if you have a mechnical injection pump-especially on the Detroit 6-71 and 8V-71, start it from the back. When you crank it, hold the governor stop lever in the stop position, then crank for about 5 seconds, keeping cranking then slowly release the stop lever while cranking and the engine magically just comes up to speed. Why-because the stop lever retards the timing when stopping.
We had a service truck that was a bear to get going on cold mornings. Smoked like a freight train when it did finally fire up. Holding the throttle 1/4 down helped. Think it does on most with mechanical injection. I remember when both those Volvo trucks were at the VMT
wow no air start on a Gillig. It weird for me to see Gillig phantoms with out air starters. Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority I guess is one of the few that spec busses with airstart. But gotta love that Mighty Detroit Diesel on that Flxible and both Phantoms

Rule number one when starting old busses, always check the coolant level and oil on the engine and transmission unless you want to wreck the engine by running her with low oil or coolant. When the low oil light comes on it's too late to fix as the damage has already been done. Figure $12,000 to 16,000 for a complete inflame engine rebuild. A bus driver or truck drive would do these checks before starting every time when doing a start on a truck or bus they hadn't driven that day. You've been warned. Cheers!
I wonder if any of these people who ask such questions ever heard of the fact that direct injection engines dont use and dont have glow plugs because they naturally start easier due to the high compression values in combination with the precision of the DI AND because these engines would tend to misfire badly if glow plugs would be used?
Smaller direct injection diesel engines (passenger car) have glow plugs, only the larger commercial vehicle engines don't. Sometimes those have a grid heater. No diesel tends to misfire due to glow plugs...

The older 2 stroke diesels didn't use them.
Mickey Chalfan a lot of older buses have Detroit diesels in them which where 2 cycle they don't have glow plugs
