Nah, I'm not doing all that. It's not my job to make sure ''the boys'' smell good before they go get drunk. My car isn't a 7-11 and I'm not providing chips and snacks during rides. It's a trip to the bar. We're not Delta Airlines. I provide safe, courteous rides in a brand-new car, some phone chargers and pleasant conversation.
Right, shocked drivers still doing this like why? You can be a decent human being, get in a conversation they like and get more tips without dealing with the extra stress of needing to have, get, and maintain all those things. Actually this is probably so 2019, I don't really hear riders say drivers do this anymore when in '19 I had to hear it all the time to the point where I finally gave in and did it, and guess what? Nothing extra but added work. Not worth it IMO.
This company is making too much money out of my car, my phone, my internet and they pay me a little just for giving me a bridge between me and the client. This is pure exploitation.
they do need to charge a little more and give the drivers a significantly larger cut in order for it to be worth it. I would never do this gig full time
Clean car, courtesy, light easy music, sense of humor. Don't talk if they choose silence or need to be on their phone during the ride. It's really mostly common sense. Usually, 9 out of 10 riders seem to enjoy casual conversation, is my observation.
Preferred pricing is the best way to go. Apps can not prevent us from doing this as “an independent contractor.” I had a full 40hr week schedule with preferred rides until I moved out of state. Now I’m in the process of making business cards for my preferred choices of customers I would like to offer that service to. I’m in business to make money… not make these apps rule my life!!
Write-offs: My tax lady informed me that I can either take the mileage write-off OR itemize my deductions. My mileage write-off is always much, MUCH better than trying to itemize. Puke bags are for my peace of mind. It's helpful that my pax appreciate them but I have them and tell people to use them in order to stay on the road, plain and simple. As was said elsewhere, I'm not a 7-11 and having candy/drinks/mints/gum available inevitably leads to a mess regardless of whether or not I have proper waste disposal and a positive for the first riders becomes a negative for the following ones. As for cologne? No WAY. It's too easy to choke people out with anything scented whether it be pleasant or somebody smelling like the bottom of an ashtray. Long Distance Rides: Depends on your market. I live in Southern California. Going from Orange County to LAX is "long distance" but can take me from one hot area (think Disneyland) to another (West Side beach communities/Santa Monica). Get Upside: I have yet to see the app give enough cash back to equal the already rock bottom prices at Arco stations which don't make use of it. Preferred Pricing: Also known as doing gypsy cab driving. I prefer not to have that liability. The potential cost FAR outweighs the potential benefit. I just turned down an offer from a couple of my riders to do just this for them and a big group of their friends. I prefer to have a clear conscience and remain legal. Second phone: Because I only drive on the weekend evenings, I prefer using my phone's hot spot to power an 8" Android tablet running Uber and Lyft in split screen while I have Apple Car Play on my head unit. Eventually I'll be installing an Android powered head unit and eliminate the tablet altogether.
I agree with some of these commenters. Some of these are a bit unnecessary, but still some good insight. I just returned to uber after not doing it for a while. One thing I learned is that you should press the “stop new requests” button to prevent the rider from adding an extra stop. I wasn’t aware of this and I ended up having to drive a woman a total of an hour because of the added stop 😓
oh well... that's consistent work and each stop is an added surcharge... so how's that a big deal? I love it when they do that. Unless they can't figure out how to do it themselves and I have to show them. Or if they decide to go somewhere we just passed and ask if I can just stop along the normal route... NEVER do that for them. They aren't your friends, you're there to make money not do favors.
I started out with just a little box.of bottled water, mints, life saver candies and wipes..paper and regular towels handy, a sheet and blanket in the truck, you never know just gotten be prepared. I also have a one cord charger that can charge apple, micro-usb and usb-C. Got a great van for it , just keep it reasonable clean, be friendly and have a few small amenities on hand for that extra bit of customer service !
Taking rides under the table can lead to being deactivated. Plus you will need commercial car insurance if you do private rides on a regular basis. Your personal insurance will not cover you in an at fault accident if they find out you was being paid by the passenger. Red flags can come out if they know you drive for ride share.
True. But you can share phone numbers for future rides. If they call you, that's their prerogative. Also, ask for a recommended donation. They might not pay. They probably will. I carry a million dollars umbrella coverage. I only drive friends.
Why not offer to shine their shoes, a clean shave, and manicure while you're at it. If you really want to make them smell good and be ready. A full selection of colognes and perfumes is definitely in order. Call yourself the Uber spa.
when I was driving, we did not have the option of knowing where we where we were going. We just accepted and hoped for the best. Wow, I may start driving again!. Well, I know I am, just getting my stuff in order. the thing about late night weekends is you get a lot of drunks. I always drove business people with some weekend nights.
I appreciate the effort you took but everything you suggested I'm already doing or don't want to do. I play my music at a very low level. I'm not bringing snacks it just messes up the car. I used to keep phone chargers but I've had too many stolen. I'm not bringing cologne. I think air freshener is a must. People take food home or some people just stink.
I have done uber driver for several years i slipped below 4.85 it affected me significantly i fixed it with my positive attitude and the rides went up after 4.85 ratings. Uber wants to the better drivers to get more rides.

I never provide any chips, gums, water or those blah-blah-blah and I have very good ratings. I always make sure to be polite and talk to passenger who want to talk. They love it.
While I do have a 2nd phone, it's inactive. I connect it to the mobile hotspot on my primary phone and then use it to stream music thru my Auto Echo. I've had many riders who think it's pretty cool to have an Alexa device in my car. You can use it to stream from many different services... Apple Music, Amazon Music, Pandora, etc. Just make sure your app stays current. Anyway, it's cheaper than paying for a 2nd line. Just a thought 😎

New Uber Driver here. Two questions, How do I end a ride if I drop off a customer just before their destination? Also, good ways to ensure the customer input the correct destination?
