I have about twelve of those type of containers I got when I was moving into this apartment. Now I think I will use them to grow sweet potatoes and close them up when I harvest. Thank you, they were just stacked in the closet doing nothing 😊
Senior citizen , mineral tubs , 1 slip only. The environment is changing. That means it's getting more challenging. Oklahoma is short on rain. The anti perspirate being sprayed above is working. If you've lived the last few years with eyes wide open you know you had better step up your game . Our garden went Ruth Stout last year . Must have soil moisture. Last years potatoes was good, sweet potatoes not so much. Lack of water. 2 slated storm's recently, we got no rain. Glad I'm of mindset that I had the drippage going. Chemicals in foods, herbicides in hay. A gardener who look's to put up their produce needs to evaluate any and all ingredients going into the garden. Did grandma and grandpa buy soil ? Oklahoma born and raised, my fancy fertilizer is from where we put last year's hay. No one in my family grows anything except me but everyone and their neighbor wants to stick a hand in my garden.
Those sweet potatoes plants are SO healthy. I grew a beautiful vine a few years ago. But had tiny tiny potatoes. They were big enough to taste . Had good soil that was enriched with compost & was loose & not heavy. Im going to try again this year. I like growing in anything that will hold dirt! Have a good rest of the day.
Your channel is such a blessing to me! I finally found someone with experience and knowledge in my same grow zone and I feel like I cant get enough of your videos! I just drink it up! Thanks for sharing all you do, God bless you!
Julie, you are so sweet and thank you so very much for watching us. We cherish our community and appreciate those who take the time to watch us. Praying you have a wonderful harvest.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. This will be the first year I have grown sweet potatoes. This afternoon I'm going to dig deep under a large tree in my woods and reclaim some fungus rich soil. There is a huge difference in home garden food and most grocery store GMO crops.
Great growing! I use the same containers for sweet potatoes. But, I subirrigated ny containers to reduce watering by laying 4 inch corrugated drain pipe with sealed ends across the bottom of the containers. But, I have to toss with the recessed bottom, so it still leaves sufficient room for root growth.
I have new slips started. We have time to grow them, so, do over. I lost all of the first round. Time to pull up my britches and get back at it. I just started some suckers from my lost tomato plants. Praying they pull through and grow up to be stronger, healthier plants for round 2, this spring.
Good morning Ms Jill! I had not planned to grow any sweet potatoes this year, but I might since I have a couple of extra 27gal tubs. A quick question. Did you bore more drain holes or was the single hole on the wicking tub setup enough for drainage? Thanks for showing us how you guys grow things! Have a blessed day!
@@ntxg Okay, thank you! I may just plant the sweet potatoes in 5gal buckets and save the totes for other things that can use the wicking tub setup. We have to be frugal these days! Lol!
You have a great channel. Very knowledgeable in teaching people to grow in our area. I’m my sweet potatoes growing in mineral tubs. When I listened to others they said 4 to 5 plants per tub??? That seemed like a lot per tub. I’m with you I’m thinking I’ll go with three. I have 20 tubs. Filling is the most difficult and the most expensive. I know I can re use the soil next year. This heavy soil is hard for root vegetables. I have invested so much in my garden in the last few years. Thanks Jill.
Hi Georgia! I agree with you. The soil is the most expensive part. But you can modify the chair by adding some minerals and compost and trying to circulate it evenly. Yeah, we stuck with 2 to 3 plants and did quite well. I don’t want them to be overcrowded and I want them to prosper. Thank you so much for watching us. We appreciate you and love all of our community members. Excited to hear more about your garden.
Thank you sooo much for your great ideas. I was told you couldn't grow spotatoes in oregon well after listening to Gone WITH THE WIND IM GONA GIVE IT A TRY THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING THE MANY PEOPLE WHO WHO LISTEN TO YOU. BLESSING 😂
Thanks for the video, we began a compost pile two years ago, we throw everything into it that will breakdown quickly. It is 5ft x 5ft x 2 1/2 high. This year i decided a test, we took our sweet potatoe slips and placed them just below the soil. We haven't harvested yet, but the leaves are larger than ever before. They stand about 2ft high, and are vining out everywhere. Now we're just waiting for harvest time. This is the first time growing this many and we're not sure when to harvest. If it is like the regular potatoes then we've probably got a month to go. Well, that's it. Blessings to you.
I loved when you said, " I'm excited to see what we do this year!!!".... Its hard to find a Christian woman who gets excited and serious about a garden crop. I am of like mind and also get excited.
Welcome to Texas! LOL I camped out at Lake Buchanan one year... had to get out of the tent and sleep in my truck before we both wound up in the dam. LOL Tent was useless after that night. Will check out more of your videos. Be safe, Be prepared, Be Blessed!
Awesome!! I plan on buying some sweet potatoes slips too and putting them in. I tried last year and they all died. It gets so hot here. I think I got them in too late. We've got nearly everything else planted. I want to put Asparagus in too. (If I can find some) Made it thru a hard surgery and still recovering so my husband had to do almost everything this year. But our new greenhouse was a big help in starting everything early. We hit 92 degrees the other day but were cooling off this week. My Rhubarb bolted and my onions already have flowers. (I trimmed the flowers off to yield more) I may need some shade cover this year. Can't wait to see what you do with those oats. I have a lot of acorns I'm thinking of using. That will be all new to me. With food becoming so polluted I'm making some big changes too. More homegrown and more canning is key.
For good tubs see if you can find some used mineral lick tubs from a beef farmer. Those tubs are 20 to 25 gallons, and excellent for growing sweet potatoes.
Good luck with your sweet potatoes, I’m on the east coast small yard, have herbs tomatoes cucumbers pepper but enjoy gardening very much also use small containers!
Yes, and we take regular cuttings, start them and have leaves all winter lond. We dry leaves and powder some. Use powder for dog cookies, and to stretch flower, along with dries and powder beans, squeeze, spring beans, etch wose case, we can have mixed poweders to replace regular flour for biblical cakes, no yeast and with yeast@@DebRoo11
Hi 👋 Mrs. Jill I'm such a sweet potato 🥔 lover and this video is going to help me with my first attempt to grow them. I see you recommend the Kellog Organic Potting Mix which is what I'll use. That wind is intense but the video is awesome. Thank you for sharing and like you say "It Is Well With My Soul" amen 🙏🏻 ❤️ God bless you!!! ☝️ 🙏🏻
I tried a Kellogg product last year, and was not particularly happy with it ... but it wasn't this particular one. The one I got said 'garden soil' but it was more like pine mulch. Maybe I just need to amend it more heavily 🤷🏽♀
@@ntxgwe made a much area with our leftover veggies, mixed in dirt, leaves, grass. Made a pile and grew sweet payaoes in it. The soil was beautiful and we added banana peels eggs she's, and used natural fertilizer, horse and chicken manure. Made natural fertilizer using grass and veggie scrapes in a bucket of water, some fish fertilizer as well, best garden ever
I planted mine early april in central texas and after monsoon season this year they really took off come June and are ready for harvesting Sept 15,2024
Next year will be my second year growing Sweet Potatoes. This year was my first and it was all right but not spectacular. I grow almost everything in raised beds. Probably going to have to use some potassium supplements next year is my guess.
Thanks for giving your average of 7 pounds yield per 27 gallon tub. I want to give sweet potatoes a try and that is a nice benchmark to see if the first crop has a decent or a low yield (probably the latter, I manage to hit all the beginners mistakes in gardening).
Not planting sweet potatoes this year. I did get our okra and purple hull seeds planted Friday. Last year the triple digits were horrible. Our our raised beds were in full sun most of the day and suffered. This year we'll have shade cloths to help bring down the temps. We get winds, just not as bad as ya'll. Thanks Jill for showing us your garden efforts. Remember ya'll to Pray, Plan, Prep
I’m in East Texas zone 8b and I’m planting out my sweet potato slips into my field which is extremely sandy but I’m working in some compost and organic fertilizer to help. So far things have been growing quite well and my slips took about 6-8 weeks to grow and take off from my seed potatoes but I’ve got dozens ready to go! I’m very excited as this is my first year growing sweet potatoes in this ground on this property so we will see how it goes! I live in the piney woods so it’s been and adventure and mostly I’ve done my growing here in raised beds and grow bags. I’m very interested in using those 27 gallon totes. What a great idea! I have a few of those but the 17 gallon ones. I wonder if I can make use of those for an experiment. 🤔 Fun stuff!
This Is my first year trying them, so I experimented with mixing sand and compost, pine needles, soil and sand, slips vs the whole potato....in a half 55gal barrel. I get them for free and they're food grade so don't have to worry about chemical residues. If nothing else I should at least get some good seeds out of it, but will definitely grab some peat or mix in mostly leaves and pine needles.
Don't feel bad, my slips are still small & am just planting today! I do mine in raised beds! I think you'll be fine! Can't wait to see the harvest! I think all channels feel that same way. Especially us small guys. You're doing awesome 🖤
I have my slips … and a raised bed to put them in … but I think I need to get that potting mix and mix with what i have in my raised bed to make the soils more loose !! I think i am trying to figure out when to put my slips in the ground? Some are still growing off the sweet potatoes and some are in a jar of water!!
Nice tip - yes -- gotta watch my soil. Nice Green house !! We are actually in Pacific Northwest - Near Portland Oregon. Soo not the best conditions. Cold and lots of rain. We have to plant the sweet potatoes under plastic. Makes it more difficult to tell what they need. Last year I watered too much - still got a crop, but tubers weren't as big and beautiful as they could have been. We plant in a 4' x 22' raised bed are to prevent them from spreading throughout the garden. I appreciate with Sweet Potatoes - that they don't have to be rotated every year. Curing them though is more of a pain - getting the temp. and humidity right for a week.
Hello Jill 😊 We use the same Kellogg’s potting mix .. we get it at homedepot… And this is our first year growing sweet potatoes Hope we get A good crop of sweet potatoes.. Your look nice and healthy So do all your plants … We are working on putting out more plants this year Thank you for your videos 👍 Take care Blessing 👩🌾
I cut a lot of costs by going to the resale stores for containers. Yes I do check to make sure they are ok to plant in. They cost me about $2.00 a piece
I have 3 sweet potatoes from slips I started 4 months ago in my new raised bed. The soils is half old topsoil and half purchased garden soil, compost and forest ocean mix. How often should I add fertilizer? Can I use quail manure tea?
Newbie at growing sweet potato. It started because I noticed that the one I had left started sprouting leaves. So I put it in water and saw roots growing out of the bottom. So I guessed that the leaves were for above soil and the roots were for the soil. I found a 5 gallon water cooler jug, cuz it's a food grade plastic, got soil from a local hardware farm store based on knowledgeable staff advice, and put the whole thing - potato, roots, leaves - into the soil. Please advise: how will planting the whole potato with roots down and vines up affect the growth?
I'm a Northerner who really wants to grow sweet potatoes. I have some 30 gallon pots that I'd like to use. How long can the slips be in the little pots? At what temperature can they go outside?
With all the rain I lost my watermelon-they burst. Now I am concerned my sweet potatoes are not going to grow or be rotten because of all the rain down here in the Houston area. Living in a subdivision one cannot have one of the nice greenhouses like you have in the video. I have a small yard. Next year I might just plant them all on my elevated patio instead of in containers out in the yard.
I was wondering what the latest date is that I could plant sweet potato slips because my dang dogs ate mine so I’m having to start over. And I know it will take a bit. They are just now sprouting on the new sweet potatoes. And I have stored these where the dogs can’t get to them this time Is it too late?
I plan on growing Beauregard & purple majesty sweet potatoes for the first time. I plan on planting 3 rows of 12 slips. I’m going to grow them in a raised bed at 18” apart & the rows 42” apart from each. How deep would you recommend for the depth of the bed? I can’t seem to get a definitive answer to this.
Where do you get potassium for planting? I live in Southern Oregon it is almost June, I think I might be too late to make slips and grow sweet potatoes this year. Thoughts?
I have voles ruining my SP growing in 50 gallon grow bags. They are coming in from the top, not through the grow bags. I'm at a loss as what to do atthis point
I planted sweet potatoes that in the ground this year just about when you did.. The vines on top look great but Im not sire if that means I've got decent potatoes.. Did you dig yours up yet?
I planted sweet potatoes in containers with organic potting soil, but somehow I had grubs in the soil eating on my potatoes. Any advice what I could do next year?
You may need to get some Sluggo for next year I think that takes care of the grubs. It’s not uncommon for me to have to go pick the grubs out of the soil and give them to the chicks.
How about the longevity of these tubs. I tried just sterlite 18 gal tubs & they deteriorated in one season - probably from our hot Sun in July & August.
Looks like you are in good shape for a wonderful potato harvest! I am super anxious about my potatoes this year. We added onto the garden and added 4 new potato beds, but it’s in new location that always seems to take forever for the ground to dry out. It’s also new compost, not from where we got it last year, and seems very dense. Fingers crossed it will work out, and we will dry out. I’m sure I will wish for rain later on this summer but right now I am so tired of this cold, wet spring we are having. Kennebec and Red Norland are planted. Sweet potatoes won’t be planted until the end of May or first week of June.
Saw your video last night and it is looking fantastic. I know you have a lot of work ahead of you, but I have complete faith that you’ll do it and have an abundant harvest.
My soil here in Florida is loose and sandy I plant my home grown sprigs directly into the ground, I add a little compost and black cow and leave them alone. I always have a spectacular harvest and I do nothing.
I'm in FL zone 8b n I cut a tip end of my sweet potato put in potting soil on a large flower pot, let it go. This was my first time planting sweet potatoes. I got two big huge ones n 5 small ones. I was only planting for the greenery. Can't wait til next year n planting white potatoes.
I am growing my sweet potatoes in a raised bed. Am a novice at this, and the potatoes aren't as prolific as I think they should be. Are you supposed to cut back some of the vines, or just let they grow wild? What kind of fertilizer do you use? Thanks and God bless.
Hi, quick question? I planted some sweet potatoes in a steep flower bed around 3 months ago. Throughout the entire time, it produced luscious green leaves. So, I went to dig them up and don't see any potatoes. Do you have a clue or solution?
I got my very forst sweet potato slip from a kitchen scrap that I planted half in a pot and kept it moist. By a miracle I got a leaf from it, once I did, I trimmed it off, placed it in a glass of water to let it root, and once it did it went into a small pot qith the cheapest soil I could get xD. About 7 months later, I have a bunch of vines hanging from that pot, and there are two sweet potatoes buried.
@@ntxg after that I tried doing the same thing with the same vines I got from that but so far I have had only a handful of small sweet potatoes, I think the problem might be the soil though.
That's a thing of beauty. I experimented with growing my own slips late last year. This year I'm ready. Another plus with sweet potato slips is that you can eat the leaves! Nothing goes to waste.
Yay!!!
For potassium I use ground up banana skin in the soil trying to keep as natural as possible and use egg shells ground up for calcium.
I have about twelve of those type of containers I got when I was moving into this apartment. Now I think I will use them to grow sweet potatoes and close them up when I harvest. Thank you, they were just stacked in the closet doing nothing 😊
Yay!!! Big score!
Don't forget drainage! Put the holes on the side, like a tomatoe bucket.
May the Lord prosper your hard work! Thank you for your video! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

It depends sister. Feed when flowering. They will need phosphorus and potassium
They’ll start to sprout on the top. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Let me know how you do.
@@ntxg Please walk me through what I'm to look for. And how long should I wait for harvesting presuming I get some yield? Thanks!
I'm a Northerner who really wants to grow sweet potatoes. I have some 30 gallon pots that I'd like to use. How long can the slips be in the little pots? At what temperature can they go outside?
Thank u
Very welcome
With all the rain I lost my watermelon-they burst. Now I am concerned my sweet potatoes are not going to grow or be rotten because of all the rain down here in the Houston area. Living in a subdivision one cannot have one of the nice greenhouses like you have in the video. I have a small yard. Next year I might just plant them all on my elevated patio instead of in containers out in the yard.
Well, I had an issue with my sweet potatoes and I’ll be doing a video today.
I was wondering what the latest date is that I could plant sweet potato slips because my dang dogs ate mine so I’m having to start over. And I know it will take a bit. They are just now sprouting on the new sweet potatoes. And I have stored these where the dogs can’t get to them this time Is it too late?
No! You have until your first freeze to harvest gal
@@ntxg thank you so much!
I felt for you with that dang wind. I lived in Wichita Falls for 9 years. 💨
Oh no!!! 🤣🤣
got me a 50 gallon grow bag and put in 5 Okanawan slips. ❤
Yay🎉🎉🎉
My Florida neighbor spent over 10 Thousand on bagged garden soils. And FL is very hard to garden in.
Ugh
You said you’re getting them in late - what month were these planted??
Usually April
Is it safe to grow food in any container?
I plan on growing Beauregard & purple majesty sweet potatoes for the first time. I plan on planting 3 rows of 12 slips. I’m going to grow them in a raised bed at 18” apart & the rows 42” apart from each. How deep would you recommend for the depth of the bed? I can’t seem to get a definitive answer to this.
At least 3’❤️
Wonder if mixing a little sand in the mix would help to loosen soil up
Do you have any tips to get the slips started? I've never had success...
Very one of your smaller sweet potatoes from last year and it’ll start producing slips
Bury
So how often do you water potatoes and sweet potatoes
Here in Texas daily
Where do you get potassium for planting? I live in Southern Oregon it is almost June, I think I might be too late to make slips and grow sweet potatoes this year. Thoughts?
What is the benefit of using a tub or planter rather then just planting them in the ground?
How do you get your slips? Mine never grow.
Cut up a tuber and stick it some dirt. Keep it well watered
Hidy Ss, I did! Yesterday and put up a video.
Thank you I'm trying to grow sweet potatoes for the first time
Might get more if your run the vine’s horizontally so the plants can create new root shoots in each tubes
The deer in my area say thank you and yum so it’s hard to grow here. Working on fencing the entire garden. Just one more expense.
Can you plant sweet potatoes to close together ! Will the sweet potatoes stay smaller that way ?!
Hi Sandra, I’m sure you can we usually put 2 to 3 plants and a 27 gallon tub and have plenty of room
@@ntxg Thank you 🙏🏿
When do you plant sweet potatoes? I'm in Arizona... 9b growing zone.
March or April fir us gal
In 2023 I got 8 Kg in a 40 Liter round pot. (18lbs 10gallons)
How do you consider the height of the container important for rooting ?
How about the longevity of these tubs. I tried just sterlite 18 gal tubs & they deteriorated in one season - probably from our hot Sun in July & August.
We’ve had our buckets a couple of years, and I think we have several more in them
Looks like you are in good shape for a wonderful potato harvest!
New subscriber in Ohio!
Thank you!!!!!
I get little insects borrowing in the sweet potato after they come out and are curing. Any idea how to deal with them? Thanks.
Hmmm I’ve not seen those. What do they look like?
I bought that same company and raised bed mix this year and it was awful. It was mostly mulch.
Oh no!!!
God bless
God bless you!
How much do you watrer?
Everyday gal
I am growing my sweet potatoes in a raised bed. Am a novice at this, and the potatoes aren't as prolific as I think they should be. Are you supposed to cut back some of the vines, or just let they grow wild? What kind of fertilizer do you use? Thanks and God bless.
You can prune but we don’t. They need phosphorus
Thanks. @@ntxg
Where do you find the tubs? I am planting late too.Ok, you told me where to find the tubs. Thank you.
❤️
How much for box?
Depends they run on sale every now and then
Hi, quick question? I planted some sweet potatoes in a steep flower bed around 3 months ago. Throughout the entire time, it produced luscious green leaves. So, I went to dig them up and don't see any potatoes. Do you have a clue or solution?
Hey gal, mine did that last year, and it was due to the soil being too dense. We had to redo our soil in our times and make it looser.
Nitrogen will grow HUGE LEAVES, small potatoes. Sweet potatoe want almost 0 nitrogen. Lots of potassium and phorporus. You know what I mean 😮
That was my problem this year, my soil packed too much and I ended up with only fat roots and no real sweet potatoes. Weird
Awe! I’m sorry
I am in south GA. I planted eggplant and got great plants but not a single fruit...😢
It is well, It is well with my soul🎶
Hey Jill our sweet taters are doing good. We planted in 30 gal pots on the grow table. Do you ever have any issues with fire ants?
We do Mike, use powdered molasses sparingly, where they are at, and they should run
Could you start over I could not hear you for the wind, just kidding 😂 lol . thanks for the info.
Sorry about that
I got my very forst sweet potato slip from a kitchen scrap that I planted half in a pot and kept it moist.
Awesome!!!
@@ntxg after that I tried doing the same thing with the same vines I got from that but so far I have had only a handful of small sweet potatoes, I think the problem might be the soil though.
I’ve never grown sweet potatoes. Do they attract Colorado potatoes beetles too?
We’ve not had that problem before but I will look into it!
